Last year My personal top hypes were;
1. Roy Williams
2. Steven Jackson
3. Sean Taylor

This year I am going with

1. Alex Smith QB
2. Vernand Morency RB
3. Antrell Rolle S/CB

My sleeper picks are

1. Kevin Everett TE
2. Marion Barber III RB
3. Heath Miller TE
4. Channing Crowder LB

I am not rating these as the top players in the whole draft, but as players the Cards need and will be available with the 1st and possibly second picks.

Rolle is top 10 first round

Smith could be anywhere in first or even drop to top of second round.

I believe Morency can drop to 2nd round.

Who were your picks last year and who do you like this year based on need and draft position?

I'm hyping my obliquitory UT guy: Derrick Johnson (not necessarily a need, but too good to pass up). I'm also going to pimp JJ Arrington, looks to have very good speed, and some nice moves from what I saw of him (granted it was against the TT sieve-like D). I'd love to see him there in the 2nd. I also like Rolle and Rogers at CB quite a bit.

I'm not on the draft a QB bandwagon this year. I like Leftwich two years ago, and wanted The Burger last year (if we didn't draft RW). I just think we have enough young developing QB's this year. Green will go after a vet that has 2 to 3 years left in him, and use him to help develop the young guys, and if they don't develop, we draft a QB next year.

Aaron Rodgers- QB Cal
Lorenzo Alexander, DT Cal

Waiting on Marcedes Lewis and Spencer Havner of UCLA to declare their intentions.

Alex Smith-TE Stanford.
Mike Williams- WR USC if he's in shape I still think he's the best WR in the draft.

Yeah I watched a lot less college ball this year than in the past so most of what I've seen has been Pac 10 this year. OU, Texas, Auburn probably the other 3 teams I've seen the most.

I'd be hyping Chase Lyman WR from Cal too but I hear he's contemplating not playing in the NFL because of all the injuries he had in college. Tough break a very good kid, sort of a Drew Bennett clone but faster, but he's had so many serious injuries in college it's scary.

Now that you mention the other Alex Smith, I would like to jump on his bandwagon too. I have adnired TEs since the days of Jackie Smith. Helps that I played at TE in school. Love watching TEs at work. In the words of Chris Berman

Rumbling, stumbling , crumbling. Nothing better than a tight end going down the middle of the field flicking DBs aside on the way to the end zone.

Last year I hyped Darnell Dockett. I had us taking him in the second round. Glad we didn't and took Dansby. But Dockett is a Monster and a perfect fit for DG. THis year I would like to see the bowl games. I liked L. Shelton a few years back after his bowl game and Steve Smith after his Aloha bowl a few years back. The Seinor bowl should be a good watch. My sleeper this year as a fit for DG is definitly Maurice Clarrett. If he is there in the 3rd we take him. To much size and speed even if he has been a bad apple. I hope we do not fall for the combine kids. I would rather look at a couple of the lineman from Michigan on both sides of the ball. There Cb Jackson could be a stud also.

Last Year:
~Ben Roethlisberger
~Roy Williams
~Vince Wilfork (I think)

This Year (in no particular order, and to be narrowed down later):
~DeAngelo Williams
~Aaron Rodgers
~Ronnie Brown
~Antrel Rolle
~Cadillac Williams
~Derrick Johnson
~Cedric Benson

...that's a lot of names, I know. I'll figure out later who I'm hitching my wagon to after I start seeing more highlights and analysis.

Also, I'm assuming Leinart either won't enter the draft or won't be there for us at #8, otherwise he is hands down my "pimp selection."

Should make the after-game showers a lot more interesting and help player morale.

Who I hyped last year:

1. Fitz
2. Vince Wilfork
3. Sean Taylor

Who I am hyping this year:

1. LB - Ahmad Brooks
2. CB - Carlos Rogers
3. TE - Heath Miller
4. RB - Ronnie Brown
5. RB - Ciatrick Fason
6. OT - Marcus McNeil
7. QB - Adrian McPherson

My sleepers(or later rounds types):

TE - Jeol Dressens - Colorado State, does everything really good but nothing excellent.

OT - Ray Willis - Florida ST. - I need a florida state guy somewhere in here after the luck we have been having with them.

CB - Ronald Bartell - Howard - 6-2, 205 lbs, 4.40 40 time, small school cover corner.

Since I don't think we have any shot in hell at getting MW due to position, nor do we need ANOTHER WR, I didn't add him to my list. But I love MW, a lot. He's a freak. I preferred him over Fitz before he was yanked from the draft last year.

I think Mike Williams isn't only the best WR in the draft, but has the potential to be the best WR of the decade. He is simply amazing and awe-inspiring.

I agree, I had both he and R. Williams ahead of fitz on my want list last year, but I will scream and cry like a little girl if we draft a WR in the first round this year--particularly MW, he doesn't have separtaion speed, either.

I disagree although in fairness in that system he gets more chances to do it, I have seen him beat his man badly several times at USC, even on long passes. Sure he makes the spectacular leaping catches or the ones where he boxes out the CB and makes the catch. I've seen him get wide open against double teams too. He's certainly not fast, but he's faster than Quan and just about as fast as Fitz, and he's one of those guys who truly is ALWAYS open because he can go get the ball.

we could just draft him and play him at TE. :)

If he could learn how to block pro-bowl DEs, then I'm all for it.

:D

I said it during the season, if we're going to ask a TE who can't block to block, we may as well get a Mike Williams type to play TE. At least on the plays he's out in the patterns he'd but unstoppable.

To be honest it's really not all that far fetched.

Shannon Sharpe was 228 pounds, MW is 6'5" 230. Sharpe caught more passes than any TE in history, and played for 2 great running teams, Baltimore and Denver. So his lack of size and blocking ability didn't stop them from being unable to run the ball.

That's it, draft mike Williams.

If the cards go anywhere near MW I will blow my top. First off, the Cards do not need a WR that high in the draft, second he is not a burner which is exaclty what the Cards need, and third, if the cards drafted him at #8 with the intentions of making him a TE they would be the laughing stock of the NFL.

It isnt just about MW ability to block, but to play physical. I dont see him ever being a good TE nor would he probably even want to try. Hell even if he were to be a good TE eventually, do you really want to waste the #8 pick on him? ummm no thanks....

No way Russ. That is one of the reasons Mike left Florida to play at USC. Miami , Florida and FSU all recruited him to play TE and he wouldn't. Too much contact and not enough touches. BTW, did he go back to school or is he just hangin' out? Hangin' out for a year is not a good thing.

This is almost too tough to do at this point because there are so many I'd love to see end up on this team...but the guys I am really cheering for are as follows:

Antrel Rolle - S/CB I still want to see him play safety more than corner...
Justin Miller - CB He may end up overshadowing my love for Rolle if the coaching staff allows him to return kicks and punts...which is often tough to allow one of your promising young stars to do when he plays such an important position (CB).

JJ Arrington - RB The dude can play...
Ciatrick Fason - RB A bit of a sleeper but similar playing style to Edge.

Ultimately, I think you have to go young with RB's. It's a position you can either play or you can't. Outside of learning to pick up the blitz there isn't as much to learn at the position in relation to others. That being said fresh legs are key and you get that with youth.

Hey Wally - what do you think of Devin Hester? Is he going to get more playing time at WR next year? I think he only had 1 catch this past year. he has some major speed.

What ever happened to Jamie German?

Oh I know, that's why I put the 3 smilies at the end. MW went to USC because Florida schools wanted him to play TE.

That said I wouldn't be surprised if he winds up at TE in the NFL. Sharpe said he resisted it in college, Marcedes Lewis wanted to play WR at UCLA.

I like Matt Jones from Arkansas as my sleeper TE, he's a QB that John H has mentioned a few times, huge kid 6'6" 240 and very fast and he's not going to be an NFL QB.

I think Mike is a terrific player but I'm not really saying we should pick him at 8 as a TE.

Although I'm not really advocating taking Mike Williams at 8 I just read a quote from Green last year after the Cards attended MW's workout and he said to paraphrase, we have a list of guys we have grouped at the top and he is definitely going to be added to that list. I think the list was 8 or 12 players.

Later Green came out and named his top 5, but that was after MW had been pulled out of the draft.

So if Green really does believe in BPA regardless of position, it would be interesting to see what he would do if he has MW rated as high this year.

Supposedly the Raiders are very high on him and RB's, but then last year they were saying they coveted Fitz, then it was Roy Williams, and they took Gallery.

Too early for me, but I like linemen and DB's this year.

We usually pick a player from the Insight and Fiesta bowl games don't we?
