Name the group of players you think the Cards should consider taking with the #5 pick before it becomes a reach. Here are mine in order;

Joe Thomas
Calvin Johson
Adrian Peterson
Gaines Adams
Amobi Akoye
LeRon Landry

If they like anyone else I would prefer them to trade down. If they were to trade down, I would like them to stay in the top 15 so they still have a shot at Joe Staley.

In order -

OT - Joe Thomas
DE/OLB - Gaines Adams - He just look ed so good in both the DL and LB drills at the combine.
RB - Adrian Peterson - Wiz wants to run the ball 580 to 600 times. Edge will get his 20-25 carries a game but that still leaves 200+ carries a year in Wiz perfect world. Sorry but I dont want Shipp or JJ taking the bulk fo the remaining 200 carries left.

Players I dont really want but would but wouldnt be pissed off either if we picked them -

DE - Anderson - Just to raw and I dont like players who were one year wonders comgin out of college.
DT - Okoye - I think he is getting way to much hype at this point int time, but he could be a big boom type pick for years.
OT - Levi Brown - I dont even like this guy but if it means Gandy will never see the light of day even for one game as a OT, then I would be fine with this pick.

Those are the blue-chip guys. If none of the Top 4 take a QB (which I think is possible), then the Cards are going to have to reach for a player, because I think that guys like Landry, J. Anderson, Okoye, Willis, Ginn, Branch, etc., fall into a group of guys that clearly make up a second tier of talent as prospects.

What are the odds that Joe Staley picked 5-10 spots later will be as good or better than Levi Brown? 50%? 60%? Teams picking in the mid-20s likely will be looking to move down (especially teams looking for value WRs since there's not a lot of separation between Ginn, Jarrett, Bowe, Rice, etc.). The Cards could be able to move back in and get Staley.

The caveat here is that if we were picking #1 overall I unquestionably think Calvin Johnson is the best prospect in the draft. He can hurt you so many ways. But obviosuly, factoring in need and our FO's inability to understand the importance of a LT, you gotta say Thomas.

I agree with your blue chip players. I think Akoye is very intriguing at his age. Landry would shore up our secondary in my opinion. I mentioned Staley instead of Brown since I think he'll be the last quality tackle in the draft and I think it is too big of a risk to be out of the top 15 in landing one. My thought was that Brown would already be gone. Remember when the Cards did trade down to get the player they wanted at the range he was projected to go and he was gone. We got Johnson and Pace. Then again, if you were to add those two together you would end up with Calvin Johnson. :D

choice in round 1

1. Mr Obvious...the chances are no better than 20%..everyone in front of us can use him albeit Raiders will not take him.
2. Levi Brown...the need is just too great not to take him
3. Gaines Adams...the best D on the board
4. L Landry...walks in and starts
5. P Willis...see a combo of 3/4! He is really really good.

I agree with everyone except Levi Brown. I think the Cardinals would be reaching if they took him at #5.

My top choices:
OT - Joe Thomas
DE/OLB - Gaines Adams
RB - Adrian Peterson

That's it, honestly. I demand we trade down otherwise.

We dont need any more rbs.Im sick of losing for petes sake/Fix the dam off.line period Levi brown or Joe Thomas.I really think if we have a line jj arrington will get alot better.and the real edge will show up..enough is enough

My choices....

Joe Thomas
Adrian Peterson
Gaines Adams
Jamal Anderson

Okoye, Branch, Brown all scare the bejeezus out of me. Okoye because he may not hit his stride until his rookie contract is up, Branch and Brown due to consistency issues.

One of these will be available when the Cardinals draft. IMO.
Why not consider LB P Willis at #5?

So Willis has entered the mix? I think the signing of OL M Gandy gives us the luxury of considering someone besides OT. LB P Willis deserves that consideration.

I endorse this argument (but not the punctuation, etc.). We have one of the best sets of skill players in the NFL. How many running backs in a row have to fail before people grasp that the OL is simply more important than RB talent? How many QBs have to bite the dust? If I were Edge, I would be in the Cards office every day, dragging a reporter with me, making the rounds from Whiz to Graves to any Bidwill I could corral, threatening to sue them for breach of contract for not improving the team, or whatever would work to wake them up. If I were running the draft, I would draft 5 OTs, a couple of them flexible, and pray that we hit the jackpot one time. [Maybe an OLB third round.] If Thomas is gone, draft Brown if there's solid evidence he can be waked up, or trade down for three picks that can be used on good OTs. After FA this year, we are adequate everywhere else (except maybe OLB), especially if we develop some blitz packages for Blackstock or whoever is best at it. We are wasting millions in salaries and years of talent forcing our skill players to run for their lives. Make this team tops on the OL, instead of the bottom as it has been for decades, and we will be a winning team.

For what it's worth, I'm assuming Gandy is not a good bet as a fix--he might be OK as backup.

I am pretty much with you Zeno with the exception that I would put Anderson is some category between the two you did --

I see him as talented but young, and a guy who might take a season and a half before he makes an impact.

I quite agree..did you see any rb's listed. I posted a few days ago that I would be very happy if the first three choices were linemen so there!

If you are sick of losing, I am making an assumption that you have not been a fan since the Chicago Cardinal days like me and a few others have been! How do you think we feel.

I hope you are not a Cub fan, you would then have about 160 years of feeling sick.

I look at it this way:

I wouldn't want to trade out of the top 10.
That small of a trade down is hard to get, unless some of the teams right below us really have their heart set on somebody. Therefore I have a bunch of guys that I consider top 10 worthy since I don't think we should trade further down, it's better to reach for a top 10 guy at 5 then get a 15 - 20 guy were he's projected.

Sorted by position:

QB: None
RB: Adrian Peterson (I wouldn't like this pic, but it's value)
WR: Calvin Johnson
TE: None
OL: Joe Thomas, Levi Brown

DE: Gains Adams, Jamaal Anderson
DT: Amobi Okoye, Alan Branch
LB: Patrik Willis
CB: None
S: LaRon Landry, Reggie Nelson

Those are the eleven differencemakers in this draft as I see it.

I agree with Shogun. If our pick at #5 is anybody other than Thomas, Peterson, or Adams then RG should be immediately removed from the FO.It's a reach and there should be a trade down. I still don't get how people are even remotely considering Willis as a top 5 pick.If we were drafting in the teens, i could see his name being mentioned. But he's even more a reach than Levi Brown at 5 and Brown would be a huge reach.
