Who do you want for our home opener?

After a watching a tough loss yesterday, I began to dream of our home opener next year. The first preseason game will be awesome, but obviously the home opener will have special meaning.

Assuming the NFL will do the right thing and make a Sunday or Monday-night spectacle out of it, who do you hope will be our opponent?

I want it to be Game #1 against the Texans or some other team with no fan base in the valley.

Sadly it will probably be Game #3 against the Raiders or Cowboys.

I would say SF, we need a tune up game to start the season. Unfortunately w/ our luck we may lose that game. I should be careful for what I wish for.

I think it will be against the Rams and that it will be in week #1 on Sunday night, the way Cleveland and Houston opened their new stadiums.

I voted for Seattle, but think it'll probably be Denver unless we somehow draw the Cowgirls as our home NFC East opponent.

The story is too good.

Another storyline would be the Rams, for obvious Bidwill-related reasons.

Seattle would be ideal. They're pretty good (and a lot lucky) this year. A good measuring stick for us, and the excitement in our new house will surely be worth a few points.

But with our luck, we'll start the season on the road. Again.

Yes. I forgot that they will be in the new stadium, taking away the 1 advantage they have had in previous years.

We could play them every year, theoretically.

Each year, we play every team from one of the other NFC divisions. This year it's the NFC East, and next year it's the NFC North. That's why we already know we'll face them at home next year.

Then, every year we play a single game, based on conference ranking, with teams from the other two NFC conferences. So we'll play them for sure every three years, and we have a 25% probability of playing them each of the other two. (Some might argue that since the Lions and Cards both tend to suck, the probablility is higher than that!)

It's kind of a fluke that we've played them every year for what seems like decades, but it could very well continue until there's an expansion team in LA, and they re-work the scheduling system.

I voted for the Bears. There's something ironic about the Cardinals playing their first game in their own brand new stadium against a franchise that - for the most part - ran them out of Chicago in 1959.

As long as it is not Dallas I don't care. The Cowboys have finally started to fade as the Valley's favorite NFL team. Giving them the opener in the new stadium would be a terrible Public Relations move and a huge boost to the Cowboys in the Phoenix market. Might as well name the new stadium Jerry Jones Field if they do that. Hopefully Dallas won't be on the schedule next year so the NFL can't screw the Cards again.


St.Louis would be the best bet from a PR standpoint. PR focus should be on building that rivalry.

No way is the home opener going to be on national TV. Nobody but Cardinals fans and the NFL organization care that the Cards are getting a new stadium. People here predicted national tv coverage of the first game because the uniforms had changed. Didnt happen. It is the game and not the stadium that determines national TV coverage. I do not believe either Pittsburgh or Cincinnati opened their stadium on national tv. Only thing the networks care about is ratings. Ratings are primarily driven by winning. There are some other factors such as NY teams that do factor in to ratings but winning is by far the most important. Hence all the Green Bay games over the last several years.
