Skelton

By far was the best looking QB out there today. Granted against 3-5th stringers.

But imho his decision making at least tonight was by far the quickest. He had the best accuracy. Great play action pass selling, think that one was a double fake, done to perfection. Great touch on deep balls. Ball got to the receiver quicker than any of the qb's. Continued to show me he can throw from any position. Can stand tall in pocket and deliver the ball. I saw something good on probably each of his throws.

This dude is a stud. Might very well be our best QB right now. Don't see how anyone stays ahead of him in the future beyond this year. I know one preseason game, but if he keeps it up, he'll be in sooner rather than later imho. Already the most cerebral Cardinals QB (well we didn't see hall so most cerebral sans watching hall). Looks like he makes reads 2-3x faster than ML. Who is the 5th year QB? I love this kid. He's our QBOF.

Stephen Williams looks to have the speed. His route running doesn't look bad, body control looks good, and everyone says he can catch. Looked like he has enough to be a big deep threat this year. Great Find.

Darryl Washington can play. He has a ways to go against the NFL best, but he was ruling the roost against the backups. Not bad for a first preseason game. This guy was a dynamo. All over the place. Great Pick.

Komar making plays. With Williams and Roberts, I just don't see him making it. Be great PS material though and perhaps next year.

I want to see a 4wr set with Fitz, Breaston, Doucet. and Williams.

The offensive line - protection and run blocking were sub par. For Keith, getting his first start against Mario Williams is not exactly the ideal scenario. He needs to get more physical out there. Williams had a clean shot at Leinart on that sack. Scared the crap out of me. On running plays, it took way too long for them to get to their man which led to Beanie and Timmy having to fight off two men before they even hit the LOS. I remember one play where Beanie laid out one guy but the other was right there to throw him down.
Oline definitely needs work. They were not on the same page at times and no push on running plays.

Keith got abused last night. It may just be a good thing as it will let him know what it is like at game speed when the season starts. And he should work even harder on his game. Let's see what kind of character he has. Will this destroy him or make him better?

No doubt there. Too many defenders coming unblocked. Hope they just need more time to gel but RWells, Faneca, and Keith were not impressive.

But then Mario Williams is a monster. Houston caught a lot of grief for drafting him but they got the deal correct. Wish we had a guy like that so we could get pressure on the QB only rushing 3.

The guy who impresed me the most was Skeleton his balls just looked much crisper then anyother qb, that play action pass where he pump faked twice was just amazing :). Also Washington impressed me he was everywhere and showed great speed on the field i'm real excited for him this year!!! Also does anyone know how long the starters will play this upcoming game vs the titans? thanks

Washington - 'Nuff said by everybody else.

Iwebama - Because of the surgery he had last year for the teratoma I tend to watch him closely. He looked great. No more worries from me on that one.

Togafau - I liked him. But Mitch, you're right. He's "diminutive". ;)

Skelton - Ahh, Skelton. Every once in a while a player comes along that has what I call "the look". It's a combination of the way he plays, the way he carries himself on the field, the self-assurance he has, his ability to play his position. Skelton is my guy this year. I was watching the other players and how they watched him in the huddle. He had their attention and their respect. I cannot wait to see more of the man because I think he could be something special for us.

Daryl Washington, Cody Brown, and Greg Toler were my favorites last night. Skelton was a nice surprise after how he faired in the red-white practice last weekend - man I walked away from that shaking my head!

What impressed me the most was the whole team. How many pre-season games have I gone to where the Cards just couldn't get on track, seemed like they could care less about the win or loss, and just took their beating and waited for next week.

Skelton came in, completed a couple of passes and suddenly the whole attitude of the team changed. Even the veterans on the sidelines where standing up egging the youngsters on.

I've never seen this kind of attitude from this team before. It was a meaningless pre-season game, but pride and a desire to show the world it ain't your father's Cardinals anymore took over and they kicked some butt. That's what impressed me the most.

Kudos to the whole team for crawling out of that hole and coming out winners. There were some good plays and some bad plays, but all in all, I was impressed by their team unity and just how much talent we have. I feel much better about our chances this year.

Justin Miller needs to be our Kickoff guy.... That's it. He sucks at everything else.

Jorrick Calvin had some tenacity to him.

Togafau was very busy.

The Oline was crap.
Our D Line was typical.

I hate the cushion the CB's have given people for 5 years.

Washington made me smile. The rookie waiting period will be shorter for him.

No freaking way. Until LSH proves that he cant handle those duties which I doubt will be ever. He should remain in the role. JMO

I agree about all of this.

Didn't Leinart have "the look" his rookie year? He was cocky, knew he could play & the team believed in him the minute he took the field. I wonder if the injury to his wing or sitting on the pine took away that confidence? I really believe if his ever gets that moxie back he will be a star. The Oline line didn't help his cause last night though he played solid.

I need to confess that I wasn't watching Matt all that closely his first year because of simple, old-fashioned prejudice: I'm a Bruin, he's a Trojan.;) Besides, I wasn't in AZ yet and hadn't seen the light and converted to the Cardinals.

Now, I'm in his corner and want him to succeed as our #1 QB. I think he needs to get his cockiness and confidence back and the only way he'll do that is to get in there and play hard and well. If he lets the "boos" affect him it won't be good. And he's going to hear them until/unless he establishes himself. But, I really do want him to just light things up.

THe second team offensive line in general. Skelton WOW! Stephan Williams has to be our number 4 or 5. The best game present to us Cardinals fans Washington... I can watch him all day. There weas two returns from Justin Miller that were exciting. Cody Brown played very well.

I think it would allow LSH to have more of a role in our offense.... But yes.... LSH does a good job as well.

Miller seemed to run with more abandon though. And with more purpose and strength.

Remember.... Miller is a Pro-bowler at the position. LSH isn't.

Duece is a guard and Keith is a tackle. Keith will be fine once he settles in. He just got a big introduction to the pros. I suspect this will end up a positive experience for him down the road.

The Good...
1) Washington
2) Iwebema
3) Lenon
4) Togafau

The OK..
1) Wells - did well but could have done more N & S instead of getting fancy at times
2) Skelton - great poise and drives for the come back... but against the 3's-5's, might push Anderson if he keeps having a good PreSeason
3) Toler - was in the right spots which is good to see

The Bad
1) The OLINE - Way to much pressure on Matt & the run game looks like they took three steps back from the past few years crew

Supprising Poor but get a pass on the 1st preseaon
1) Leinart - Sorry he doesn't get a pass this game his reads were slow and the balls where not trown to the correct spots not just on the Fitz pass he was missing the correct spots on almost every throw. These are some of the same issues we say last year when he came in.

2) Feely - Wow sure do miss Rackers already if nothing else at least I knew he was a true Cardinal

3) 1st Team DLine - would have been nice to see some more pressure from this "Great DLine" they didn't even come close to the type of pressure the Texans got. :(

Have to disagree with your assessment of Leinart. OL didn't protect at all. He completed 6 of 7 & his pass to Fitz was right where it needed to be. How can anyone miss Rackers?? Feely missed a 51 yd fg in the 1st half of a meaningless game. So what! When he starts missing fg's with the game on the line (like Rackers did routinely), only then I'll be concerned.

1. Daryl Washington: not just the way he played but by the way he led the defense. It was impressive for a rookie to look so in control.

2. Toler? Yep, he showed up.

3. Stephen Williams: I thought his catch was the best of the game. He took a personal foul shot to the head, held on to the ball, and got up with attitude. On the deep pass interference call, he had two steps on the DB but the ball was underthrown by Skeletor, he came back for it and drew the flag.

4. Togafau: seeing it live I'm not that sure of his impact, but I noticed him.

5. Skelton, aka Skeletor: sure, why not. His stats were awesome but who knows how much it matters. He did lead us to a 4th Q comeback victory.

6. Komar

That hit Togafau put on Slaton at the goal line had a huge impact. Just crushed the ball right out of Slaton's hands. Otherwise its probably 17-0 Texans. Dumpster Williams also had a big role in that stop.

You're wrong about Matt on that one throw to Fitz. Matt either gets that ball to Larry earlier, which is what Warner was really good at, or he has to look off the safety more before he picks up Larry. I played the position in college and you can't stare down your best reciever and give their safety a chance for a kill shot. I guarantee you that Leinart apologized to Fitz for that throw being so late.

Since he's been in the leauge Leinart has had a problem locking on his receivers too early. Some guys can get away with that, but usually that's reserved for guys like Elway or these days Flacco both of whom have total cannon.

DAS787 is right. Matty Boi stared down Fitz and delivered the ball late.

Getting our receivers killed is one of Leinart's specialties.

Just like cutting out of the stadium after a poor performance (this wasn't the first time).

have to state I thought Matt layed out Fitz by locking in on him, safety read that and got an extra step to nail Fitz... the WR's won't last long if this continues... but I do believe Leinart can lead the Cards to Division (9 and 7 can do it)... ummm, that is if the O line can pick it up, ML has enough talent to win in this league... what happened to Anderson?... I like the idea of keeping Skelton and Hall...

Toler really impressed me with his athletic talent.

I had a great view on a pass he broke up. He was breaking on the reciever and jumped to tip the ball, the reciever stopped and in mid-air Toler twisted his body to keep from coming into contact with the reciever and still reached around to bat down the ball.

9 times out of 10 when you see that play you have pass interference and contact before the ball gets there.

A really amazing play by a young player.

The other guy is Skelton.

The ball just seems to explode off his hand.

I wouldnt use the people who comment on a regular basis on the azcentral articles as credible resources to back up your argument. They are a combination of amateur fans, trolls, and outright haters.

Again, the stance that Leinart led Fitz to doom on that play is complete garbage.
I agree on the credibility of the posters. Just pointing out that I was not alone.

I will agree to disagree with you TJ.

I would like to add ..

The guy backed a player that was a master at preparing for games and reading defenses and it looks like he wasn't paying attention at all. 4 years we have been waiting for ML to show something more than just basic skills. When will we see it?

I expect more from him because of the opportunities he has had to work with KW.

I want him to succeed because he is the starting QB for my team. But I am not going to blindly heap praise on him.

Show me something Matt so I can start to believe.

- Daryl Washington had a Patrick Willis type evening with 13 tackles.

- A whole slew of young corners (including Toler, Calvin, Jefferson, Ford and M Green) all showed a willingness and ability to tackle securely (a far cry from the previous 2 or 3 years)

- What I'm wondering is how fast any or all of our young but raw DB's can improve from where they were at last night to a point where they can be trusted to play full-time.

- The thing about Skelton isn't so much that he can be "ready to start from day 1." No doubt he'll have many things to learn/mistakes to overcome and will have to demonstrate he can perform at a high level game after game. But what impressed me was (a) he was calm under fire, (b) showed the arm strength and accuracy to make some really nice throws and (c) when he needed to make the big play, he stepped up and did it! At the very least, he gave us all a vision of "what eventually can be" (Now the question remains - How fast will he be on the learning-curve? This we don't yet know).

- We're kind of deep at wideout. (Komar? Williams? OJ?) I've got to question out loud whether Roberts (& his lack of velcro hands) represents the most expendible of the bunch.

- The guys instrumental in our winning last nights game must all be nicknamed: "Who?" Think about it: A LB from TCU, a rookie from Fordham, a 2nd year guy from St Paul and a walk-in from the street (Fletcher).

- Neither Leinart or Anderson increased my confidence that they can lead us to the promised land. (They didn't decrease my confidence either, but they still didn't prove anything). The Leinart to Fitz near-disaster scares me (Does Matt tend to put the ball in places that can hang our receivers out to dry)? And unless Anderson learns to take some of the Tobasco off his balls, his interception-rate isn't about to go down soon.

- Run blocking by our first unit was subpar.

- Not that I don't love THT, but: If it's realistic to assume our offensive line will continue to struggle in the run game, at least we've got a chance to reach the LOS with someone stronger in there like Beanie (who can get more push all by himself). Just wondering.

- Did Justin Miller's 2 runbacks redeem that awful coverage breakdown that almost cost us the game?

- This time (at last), Pago Togafau deserves to make this team's final roster. That's all I'm gonna say.
