Unfortunately you could be right. I just don't think Capel is a good hire.
Agreed, I'll be so disappointed if it's him.

It's got to be Lavin.
Over the past four years on coach Mike Krzyzewski's staff, Capel's responsibility has grown. Before Friday's open Final Four practice, Capel acted as if this were no big deal -- "Since I've been back, Coach has given his assistants a lot of freedom," he said – but former Duke standout Grant Hill wasn't so sure.
In February, Hill traveled to Cameron Indoor Stadium with fellow CBS analyst Bill Raftery for Duke's Atlantic Coast Conference contest against Notre Dame. Hill watched the Blue Devils practice and was amazed at Capel's role.
"He runs the practice," Hill said. "In film (sessions), he's running film. In the coaches' meetings, he's the one talking. It was just interesting, because (in my time at Duke) Coach K has always been that voice. … Clearly, Coach K has a lot of trust and respect for him."
I like Capel. Great hire for UA.Why don't you guys like Capel?
I spoke with Jerry Colangelo this morning, who as Chairman of the Board attended the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announcements, and he raved about Capel and his experiences with him as a staff member on Team USA's gold medal run.
"I know him well and I think he's terrific," Colangelo said. "I think he's a solid guy. He really knows the game. The one thing that was pretty evident with the (pro) players: They respected him a lot.
"And Coach K, as it has come out the last few days, he's given him a lot of rope to run practices, and responsibility.
"When you live with someone like that, like I have for a summer, you get to know him pretty well. The character, the work ethic, the capacity to do a job. He's right at the top of the list."
Capel had basically the same winning percentages at Oklahoma as Herb did at ASU which says the most.
Colangelo and Grant Hill and Jay Bilas are extremely biased sources. Nor have any of then ever hired or produced a quality college basketball coach (JC's head coaching decisions for the Suns were mostly abysmal, let's be honest) so their opinions don't really mean much.
Do you not account for his improvement while coaching at Duke
Do you not account for his improvement while coaching at Duke?
Winning with 5x more talent than anyone else?Jerry Colangelo did quite a nice job with team USA.
That's speculative. Nobody really knows if he got better at or worse at Duke. Not like coaching under K has helped out Dawkins or all the other failures on that coaching tree. I do think Capel is an upgrade from Herb who was dead man walking, but Capel really screwed the pooch at Oklahoma which as Tubbs, Sampson, and now Kruger have proven has a much greater upside than ASU. Guess we'll see but ASU has whiffed the last several times they have gone the retread route in basketball. I would have gone with someone with more to prove and bigger upside. Irvine's coach would have worried me the most of any of the rumored names to be honest with you.

And that doesn't mean he knows how to identify quality coaching. Let me remind you of Frank Johnson, actual NBA head coach.
In what way?
Ask Oklahoma what they think of him.
Trust me, UofA and the rest of the PAC-12 are just fine with Capel potentially coming to Tempe.
It's pretty much Duke guys and Colangelo (Kryzweski's buddy) lauding Capel because he's one of their own. His hire will be criticized by just as many across Big 12 country and out West mostly because he imploded at Oklahoma while having some pretty serious NCAA violations alleged against the program.Actually I do not have an opinion about the Sun Devils hiring Capel but a lot of people in the know think highly of him.
If Capel can bring Dukes referees with him then ASU WILL win the national title next year

Maybe I should ask Mike Krzyzewski what he thinks of Capel since he has been an assistant coach there since 2011.
Might as well ask everyone who's ever played and/or coached at Duke for more recommendations. They'll assuredly tell you what you want to hear, since what you're looking for is unbridled optimism.
Capel's a mediocre coach who brings with him a record of recruiting infractions. He had one successful season with Blake Griffin and then fell off the map. Not sure why so many are getting excited over him; is it simply because he is (was) an assistant at Duke?
I like anyone the U of A homers don't want ASU to hire.
Give this man a cigar
I'd tell you if I felt a coach would be a good hire or not. Honestly, if you could pull Russell Turner, I'd be concerned, but he's staying at UCI.
