RUMORS SPREAD THAT CARROLL-TO-CHARGERS IS A DONE DEAL

There is increasing talk in league circles regarding suspicions that the San Diego Chargers already have a secret deal in place with USC coach Pete Carroll.

Folks are pointing to some of the same facts we outlined on Monday night, after word broke that Marty Schottenheimer had been fired. Some think that the most convincing proof was/is USC assistant Steve Sarkisian's abrupt about-face with the Raiders, followed days later by the decision of his former Trojan colleague, Lane Kiffin, to take the job.

Why else, the theory goes, would Kiffin take a job that Sarkisian didn't want unless they both knew that Carroll wasn't long for the USC gig, and that Sarkisian, not Kiffin, had been hand-picked to replace him?
Others are pointing to the fact that the first guy to be interviewed is Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, who has no head-coaching experience but who helps the Chargers satisfy the Rooney Rule quickly, in the event that the Pete Carroll cat gets out of the bag prematurely and none of the minority candidates agree to sit for the job. (See Detroit Lions and Steve Mariucci.)

We're also told that there is worry among the incoming class of USC recruits regarding the possibility that Carroll is leaving. But Pete has opted not to even address the situation publicly.

If he were not going to be the San Diego coach, he could easily say so. The fact that he has said nothing at all speaks volumes, in our view. Especially since he now has a couple dozen nervous high school seniors who signed papers seven days ago under the assumption that the head coach would be sticking around for at least the next month.

Stay tuned. We predict that the Chargers will go through the motions with several candidates, and that Carroll will then swoop in out of the blue as the guy.

If that happens, look for Pat Kirwan to soon follow him -- and for G.M. A.J. Smith to definitely get the boot after the draft.

PFT continues to hype their reputation on the Carroll to SD deal. For the sake of their reputation, I hope they're wrong. After all, they have the reputation of getting everything wrong and we wouldn't want them to ruin that.

....and Marty goes to USC. :D

Maybe Pete will coach both USC and the Chargers. Hey if Steve Jobs can be the CEO at both Apple and Pixar.

It's not like there's a whole lot of difference, other than San Diego's salary cap being smaller than USC's.

:D

Carroll not in Chargers' plans

February 15
Los Angeles Times (registration required): "The San Diego Chargers like Pete Carroll, respect what he has done at USC, and even think he might be a good choice as their new head coach. But don't expect it to happen. Carroll is on the team's radar but not in its plans, a source familiar with the situation said Wednesday."

Chargers | Singletary interviews for five hours Wednesday
Wed, 14 Feb 2007 21:58:51 -0800
Casey Pearce, of Chargers.com, reports <A href="http://www.kffl.com/team/32/nfl">San Francisco 49ers assistant head coach Mike Singletary spent five hours interviewing with the San Diego Chargers Wednesday, Feb. 14. Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said, "We had a terrific interview with Mike today. It was very informative. We exchanged a lot of ideas in a very informal setting. Our time involved a great deal of philosophical discussion, both his philosophies and ours. Most of all, I enjoyed a chance to talk football with Mike." Team president Dean Spanos discussed with Singletary how the team operates and how the head coach fits into the team's organizational structure. "Dean talked about his organizational structure and what's expected of the head coach. We discussed the roles of the general manager and head coach and how they will work together to win a championship. The goal of this search is to find the man that can help us get where we want to go. We want candidates to have a full awareness of what's being asked of them," Smith added.

Holy moly!! Czar of Nepotism Bidwill hires both Emperor of Nepotism Buddy Ryan and King of Nepotism Denny Green.

King of pain, I'll always be, king of pain, I'll always be.

Artist: John Hartford Lyrics
Song: I am a Man of Constant Sorrow Lyrics
(In constant sorrow through his days)

I am a man of constant sorrow
I've seen trouble all my day.
I bid farewell to old Kentucky
The place where I was born and raised.
(The place where he was born and raised)

For six long years I've been in trouble
No pleasures here on earth I found
For in this world I'm bound to ramble
I have no friends to help me now.

[chorus] He has no friends to help him now

It's fare thee well my old lover
I never expect to see you again
For I'm bound to ride that northern railroad
Perhaps I'll die upon this train.

[chorus] Perhaps he'll die upon this train.

You can bury me in some deep valley
For many years where I may lay
Then you may learn to love another
While I am sleeping in my grave.

[chorus] While he is sleeping in his grave.

Maybe your friends think I'm just a stranger
My face you'll never see no more.
But there is one promise that is given
I'll meet you on God's golden shore.

[chorus] He'll meet you on God's golden shore.

The President of the Chargers really blew this one by waiting so long to fire his HC. He had two Assistants who are now HC who he could considered. Most of the good candidates are already hired. No way Cowher will embarrass the Rooneys and himself by taking the job. Most of the good assistants have been snapped up. The man he fired could probably have found a HC job had he known earlier he would be fired. LT and the rest of the players are now pissed. The President layed a big egg in his handling of this matter. He also offered Shottenheimer a one year deal which was an insult to him after having the best record in the NFL and I do not blame him for not accepting it. I sort of think we may have one of the best coaching staffs in the NFL at this point and it will pay dividends. This is sort of the way the Cards formerly operated.

I think they go young...

I think it's Jim Mora Jr's to lose and
Mike Singletary a very close 2nd.

I think Singletary is very similar to Cowher but adds the Hall of Fame player credentials...

How many HC's have ever been Hall of Fame players as well? Bart Starr?

Oh yeah...Mike Ditka but Starr and Ditka both were elected after they became head coaches.

I'm afraid that Pete Carroll is an option....I often get to attend Trojan Club meetings, and at the last meeting we were told by one of the guest speakers (a USC alumni who now works for ESPN) that Sark was being "groomed" for the head coach position and that it was not known how long Pete would be with us as HC. The only ray of hope is that he turned down the Miami HC position, the owner flew to Costa Rica and basically offered him a tons of money and full control of personnel decisions...and he almost took it, but decided to stay at USC.....but San Diego is another situation entirely. We shall see.

I love it! The S.F. fans are going to be melting down. They thought they dodged a bullet when Turner missed out on the Dallas job. I think their offense takes a step back next season.

The 49ers take a step back this season for sure. Especially if jerry sullivan takes over the oc duties.

Hey, I guessed right....I mean, I "knew" it would be Turner. In hindsight, it makes sense though. San Diego has a strong willed GM that doesn't want to be butting heads with his HC and Turner is a bit of yes-man.

I didn't realize Rivera was a "free agent" so to speak. This may have been covered already but does Arizona have any interest? I know they have the money(available anyway).
