Before free agency began, the Chicago Bears made two separate splashes to their roster trading for offensive linemen Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson less than 24 hours apart.
Acquiring both Thuney and Jackson was not something that had been expected, although the Bears were considered as a team that would be very active in free agency, they got a head start. General manager Ryan Poles worked with new head coach Ben Johnson to find who they thought would be the right fit in upgrading the offensive line, and Poles made the most of the opportunity to make the trades.
Speaking to the media after Thuney and Jackson were introduced last week, Poles explained why he jumped at the opportunity he didn't necessarily plan for.
"Obviously that wasn't part of the plan back when we were getting ready for free agency," Poles said. "I've always learned just over the last few years you've got to be on your toes for those things that pop up, so when you match the flexibility in doing good stuff with our salary cap opportunities, we were able to jump on it."
There's familiarity with both players as they make their way to Chicago, as Jackson played for Johnson when the two were part of the Detroit Lions, and Poles was part of the Chiefs front office that signed Thuney to Kansas City. That familiarity and understanding of all parties involved will help make the transition of this new regime go over more smoothly, as the Bears look to make themselves a real threat in the NFC North next year.
