Always take forever to come up?

It is about 3 years old and seems to take forever to get the system going. Then once it is up it seems to be very slow. I know that it is a little older but is there anything that I can do to get it going a little faster?

Limit the programs that start up with the system, remove unwanted files, defragment the hard drive, and increase the system memory.

How do I limit the programs that start up with the system?

I can remove unwanted files, but should it take like 3 to 4 hours to defragment the hard drive? That is what it took last time.

Can you increase the system memory on a HP Laptop?

Thanks SirChaz

What OS is the computer running?

Make sure any screen savers or other programs are off or disabled while defragmenting.

Depending on the size of the drive and the level of fragmentation it could take several hours. Doing this regularly (like once a month) should reduce the time it takes.

Computers have a maximum amount of memory they support. This information can usually be found on the mfg website. Also if you go to crucial.com or the kingston configurator bratwurst linked in the other thread they will tell you how much and what kind of memory your particular model will take.

run msconfig and uncheck everything in startup that doesn't need to be running.

Clean up your system registry. Try this:

RegCleaner

This made a HUGE difference in boot up time and overall perfiormance on my PC (I'm assuming you are running Windows OS).

I don't recommend editing your registry unless you really know what you are doing......

So I cleaned up the start up system under msconfig! It seems to be a little faster but it is still pretty slow...

I don't want to mess with anything that will be harder to fix.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the help....

RYANW - I think that I should look into what kind of porno my wife is looking at!!! My laptop is running GREAT....

Check out what power scheme you are using. Most laptops built several years ago used stepping technology, where the laptop CPU would start at a lower speed and only "step up" as needed to run more demanding applications. I had a Compaq laptop that always ran like a dog. I called support and Apu told me to go into Settings, Control panel, Power options and under Power schemes, choose the Always on selection. This would keep the CPU running at the highest speed. You may want to adjust some of the additional settings to the scheme so your monitor/harddrive never sleep while on DC power.

I thought Apu was pulling my leg, so I clicked on the System tab, General tab in the Control panel and my 1.1ghz laptop said it running at 411mhz. Once I changed the setting, it was now indicating 1.1ghz.

Of course, if you check the System tab first and see that the speed indicated is what you're laptop is rated at, then none of this applies.

In that case, defrag and get rid of spyware/adware. They are both major slower downers.

Thanks I made that change and am working with my HIJACK this to get rid of the spyware... Hopefully this will speed it up...
