Why is Dansby not making big plays?

Karlos was THE best playmaker on our D last year. He was tagged because of his sacks, INTs and fumbles forced and recovered. So far this year, he has only 2 sacks and no turnovers. Is it scheme, or something else? I'm inclined to say he's not being cut loose as much by Pendy, but I'm wondering what you guys think.

I still think he is more of a playmaker at OLB.

Against Dallas we had a solid pass rush by bringing just 4 guys(This is a good thing). So you are not going to see him get huge sack #s if he is dropping back into coverage more often.

Well, he's turned into a leader. He's a captain and has laid the lumber on a few tackles. Yes, he's dropping back into coverage more, but he should be getting some picks or passes defensed. He's not even doing that and that is a strength of his game.

Against Dallas I really focused on Karlos a lot as I've been curious and concerned about his disappearance this season...
The only thing I could see is that he simply appeared slower... His reaction times and overall speed just seem slower... Not sure why, but he just wasn't getting to spots as quickly as he was last year... I have no idea why. Is this his normal speed and this is who he is? Was last year just one of those years some players have, where they produce above who they really are?
I don't know... but the bottom line is for someone playing in his contract year, he has really underperformed... He won't be happy come the offseason...

Right now he's on pace for 112 tackles and just over 5 sacks (5.33 to be exact). The tackles would be a career high and he's only registered over 5 sacks once in his career. He's only had seven picks and eight forced fumbles to this point in his career so it's not like he's been racking it up in those departments. If he picks up a couple of interceptions and forced fumbles anytime over the next 10 games, he'd be right in line with his career averages.

Because he wants to be a Cardinal for life and doesn't want us to have to break the bank for him. :)

I think he is doing better this year then people give him credit for so far. Hasnt been making as many plays in coverage but he is on pace to get 100 tackles for the first time in his career. On pace to have about 5 sacks which is his average. He has already reached the same amount of tackles for loss that he had last year in 8 fewer games. Plus he was named Captian by his teammates and was asked by the coaching staff to wear the defense play call headset during the game. He is the only guy on defense who doesnt get a rest during the game.

He just needs some more stuff in coverage duties concerning PD's and INT's. He is a streaky player though and most of his stats usually come in chunks so he has plenty of time to get those.

I wonder if him wearing the headset and calling the D isn't giving him too much to digest right now. If thats the case expect him to pick up his numbers, as it becomes more natural to him.

That and he seems to be playing noticable better since Watson is now back in front of him instead of the valiant but still lacking effort of the smaller Bryan Robinson and Branch who is now relegated to inactive list duty.

But you may be right he may be thinking more then actually playing now that he has all of these new duties.

Laboy and Berry have 4 sacks, Dockett has 2, Okeafor has 3, and even Bryan Robinson and Gabe Watson have one while Calias Campbell and Antonio Smith have also made some plays. Our defensive line is thus far getting it done in the pass rush (at least in our wins it has) so there's not as much of a need for Dansby to be a playmaker like he was forced to be in years past when guys like Joe Tafoya, Daryl Blackstock, and Ross Kolodiesz were getting serious PT on the defensive line.

Dansby will get his, he's too good of a player and is around the ball too much not to.

Only?

Those are really good numbers for a LB especially when you add in PDs and tackles. You won't find any but the elite LBs in the NFL with Dansby's combination of stats.

As for just doing it last year that is wrong also. Karlos has made plays every season he's been in the NFL.

2006- 8 sacks
2005- 3 INTs two returned for TDs

He's no Calais Campbell but the guy is a keeper.

I wonder if he has been trying to play smarter. In the past, Karlos was a big playmaker because he took chances. He would either get beat bad or he would make a play. He seems to be more of a general this year. He is coming into the prime of his career, so hopefully he can learn to balance the playmaking and the smarts. Lord knows our defense has suffered from stupidity in the past. Our record shows that as a whole they have improved on this, but they still give up the big play. Pendy needs to put his playmakers in position to make plays. With the insane tenacity that Laboy and Bert are playing with this year, I think Pendy may be more comfortable blitzing the guys who can't cover as well or not blitzing at all. Dansby will blow up for a couple great games this year, just let him get situated. He is playing for money this season, so that should light a fire. Hopefully.

I think Dansby is not going balls out on plays because it's a contract year. He knows the Cardinals are going to let him walk and he's going to get a huge pay day. He saw what Calvin Pace got and knows he's worth more

Just my opinion.

not having Watson,or a big, run-stuffing NT, is probably hindering Dansby a bit. I think he's playing well. He's not making the spectacular, highlight reel plays yet but he's been very steady. The big plays will come. Look at Antonio Smith. A couple games ago he was garbage. Now, he's a keeper after the Dallas game.

I wasn't saying that he isn't really good or that having that combination of stats wasn't really good. My point was that he averages about 2 picks and forced fumbles a year so it's too early to say he's under performing.

16 game season. Patience, people. By year's end, his worth to us will have been set by his play. That's a good thing. Letting him play under the franchise tag is good for both him and us, as I've been harping all year.

Think back. Walter Jones and Lance Briggs set their value that way. So too have others whose names escape me.
