besides the buyout why didn't we take him? he was a lottery pick. the knicks got a steal and will recieve an A+++++. But what else was wrong with Lampe?

Zarko Cabarkapa | SF | 6-11 | Serbia

Ford's Take: Obviously the Suns did make him a promise. With a better prospect, Maciej Lampe, still on the board the Suns stick with what they guy they said they'd take. He's a great shooter for his size, but he doesn't have nearly the shooting touch that Lampe does. The Suns wanted a big guy who could stretch defenses. Cabarkapa can do that, but Lampe can do much, much more.

His contract situation sounded horrible. Worse than Jake's was.

I agree Chap. But Ford is probably right. If there was a promise, the suns were going to hold to it. They wouldnt want to upset the agent, and loose their reputation with other FAs and players.

Lampe plays for Real Madrid.

Real Madrid is likely a MUCH bigger franchise than the Lakers even.

Lampe has a contract for more years and a team option for many more year. The buyout is 2.2 million dollars.

NBA teams can only offer 300k for the buyout and Real Madrid doesn't need peanuts anyway.

Only way would have been if Lampe went like top 5 and could have give up some of his own money to get out of the contract.

That's a load of crap. There's nothing that says they made him a promise. Just because rumor is substantiated, doesn't make the rumor true.

That is the exact reaason no NBA team is gunna make a "promise"...

Everyone knows the draft allways has afew guys that fall...

The fact that the Suns have dealt with this sort of thing with Big Jake, shows they know there will be a big problem with Lampe's situation.

They might have said, "If you are there at #17, we will definitely consider you long and hard," but there's no way a team would say, "If you're there at #XX, you're ours," unless he really wowed them in workouts. That could have been the case, but I don't buy it.

his contract was for 2 more years and then they (his europe had a chance for another 7 year contract after that. that the team was talking about a 10 million buy out to get him out of his contract. also there was the talk that he couldnt dunk off of one foot, while i dont believe this it does give you an idea that he wasnt the best choose for a team that wants to be a running team.

As Ford mentioned somewhere. the Knicks could offer Lampe a 2+ mil a year rookie contract to facilitate an immediate buyout, since he is now a 2nd rounder. I.e. he could get much more than a #17 pick is scheduled to earn. The Suns may not have gotten him out of his contract with Madrid at all. This was a very tricky situation indeed.

Plus his buyout went up every year so if he didn't come over right away he would have to pay more to come over later.

Just listened to Tim Shea talking to Gambo on 910.

He said that the Knicks made a mistake picking Lampe. The buyout is not worth it. He said the buyout doesn't go away either. It gets bigger over time.

He said that Lampe has a sweet shot but has mobility limitation.

While he didn't say this directly, it sure sounded like the Suns consider Zarko a much more complete player than Lampe, and without complicating contractual issues.

Don't shoot me for the opinion. Its not mine. I don't know enough about Lampe to have an opinion myself. This is just what Shea said.

I really think the Suns drafted Zarko cuz he's athletic. I mean if you saw the video clips of Lampe it seems like he has weights tied around his legs. He has major mobility problems. I'm very happy with our draft and excited to see these guys in a suns uniform. Go Suns!!!
