I have to admit I was puzzled as to why the Suns were interested in Marks. His NBA number have not been much although he has a had a few nice games.

My suspicion is that he got their attention with his play with the New Zealand National team. http://www.basketball.org.nz/index.cgi?sID=25

The men qualified for the 2002 world championships in Indianapolis and stunned the basketball world (and most Kiwis) by reaching the semifinals, toppling Russia, Venezuela, China and Puerto Rico on the way.

In 2004, our men and women returned to the Olympics in Athens, where the Tall Ferns defied their critics by making the quarterfinals, beating China and Korea along the way. Two years later, both teams returned from the Melbourne Commonwealth Games with silver medals ... the Tall Blacks led Australia with two minutes remaining in the men's final.

I haven't found much detail about Mark's contribution, but there have been several references to how he was a major of focus of their offense. In any case, I suspect that it is his international experience that has led people to conclude he's a good outside shooter rather than his limited NBA play.

It would be interesting to know why the Suns think he's worth the bother.

I'm not sure what the Suns see in Marks or even Burke for that matter other that they are tall, somewhat mobile and can shoot from the outside. Plus they are probably good practice players. However, I do not see them as dependable contributors. But as KT's durability and Amare's knees are worrisome going into the coming season I am concerned about playable depth. I even see EP as running on fumes.

IMO, the Suns need more depth especially at the 4/5. I will keep try to keep pounding the ball inside with my comments... the Suns need at least one "dirt worker" on the squad to rebound, set screens, play some defense and do some other unglamorous chores. I previously mentioned a younger Malik Rose type player, would be a nice addition. If the Suns end up in a half-court game they will need this type player to rebound if they are reduced to an outside shooting team.

Right now I'm not sure who's left or even if the Suns are looking hard to shore up their depth on the frontline.

I would've much rather Scot Pollard over Marks.

And i think Pollard might've signed the vet min to play for us.

Not to mention Pollard would actually make it off our bench.

How about because he shot over 50% last year for a good team while almost all of those shots were medium (17 foot - three-point line) jumpers? How about because he is supposed to be a great guy and good locker room presence? How about the Phoenix Suns signed him because he is big, tall, and inexpensive?

I believe those are the four reasons the Phoenix Suns signed Sean Marks. He might have impressed them in the Olympics, but I doubt that had more to do with anything then the above reasons.

With All that said, He still won't make it off the bench unless its garbage time. :)

Assuming everyone is healthy, Marks is not likely to be viewed as more than the 10th man in an eight man rotation.

He also has a title. Championship experience. While its often overblown, its at least something.

Marks will get playing time a 10-15 games a month because we'll be blowing teams out next season :)

I don't know if it will matter, but Marks has inside knowledge of all the Spurs plays.
