There's still a lot of football to be played, prospects to watch and other personnel stuff that has to unfold before anyone can zero in on any one college prospect and claim "we gotta have him."
We don't know where we will pick.
Most of us haven't seen all the guys we have to see.
We'll remain in the dark about which of our own players we want to keep, who wants to be here and who we'll actually keep.
We can't be sure what kind of football team and offensive/defensive systems the coaches have visualized going forward - and what kind of players we'll want to add/subtract in order to best implement those systems.
And then there's the CBA and the possibility of a non-contract year.
And stuff going on with other teams - both inside and outside our division.
Cam Newton certainly has the size and skill set. But would he necessarily help the Cardinals the most within the context of other needs which impact the position; specifically our O-line - especially at LT?
As to the QB position - What are the main criteria - Vick-like athleticism (can beat you with his arm or feet)? Montana-like accuracy and ability to read defenses? Leadership intangibles? Ability to absorb NFL-level of QB play quickly? And, aside from all that, will he even be available when we pick? Seldom will Mr. Perfect drop precisely into our laps - there will be trade-offs.
As an aside- Maybe these are just my perceptions, but it seems to me that there are a lot more QB's than usual coming out this year (including Gabbert and Mallett) who can sling the football. (Even more impressive - there must be 50 wideouts who all are bigger than 6-5, have velcro hands, can jump thru the roof and run under 4.4).
My instincts tell me that, perhaps we should all settle down and, over the next couple of months, figure out our list of Top 15 draft prospects in line with a BPA strategy; plus, of course, our strategy (covering options which include: free agents, trade-possibilities, the draft and on our own roster - within the context of the kind of guys we're looking for) for getting healthy at QB.
