The Rochester Red Wings make their home debut April 1, and they’ll have to contend with chilly conditions and the possibility of rain during the opening homestand against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

The Red Wings already had one game postponed March 30 due to rain, which was rescheduled to a doubleheader on April 23. The Red Wings play a six-game series against the same opponent on a 6 days on, 1 day off schedule while alternating home and away.

The weather this week will represent the variability of springtime in Rochester, with a generally warmer temperature trend offset to some degree by several days with a possibility of rain.

The Red Wings are 1-1 so far this season.

Tuesday, April 1 vs. Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 4:05 p.m.

The first homestand of the season kicks off with a knit hat giveaway and chilly temperatures, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo. The 38 degrees expected for the first pitch will feel below freezing due to winds out of the northwest. That’s also 12 degrees cooler than the normal high for April 1 in Rochester, though there isn’t any precipitation potential for the duration of the game.

It also bodes poorly for Red Wings general manager Dan Mason’s guarantee of 50-degree temperature on opening day. Should the forecast hold, anyone attending the game will be able to redeem their ticket at another home game in April or May.

This early evening start will still provide substantially warmer temperatures than opening day, with a more seasonably normal 51 degrees for the first pitch. Skies will be mostly cloudy, with 16% precipitation potential.

Thursday, April 3 vs. Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 1:05 p.m.

The forecast calls for seasonably warm 69 degrees, though gusty winds and cloudy skies portend the possibility of rain in the first hour of the game. The precipitation potential peaks at 48%, but drops to just 16% after. It’s College Day for the Red Wings, which means college students can show their ID to receive a $16 ticket and $5 to spend on concessions or in the team store.

Friday, April 4 vs. Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 6:05 p.m.

Cooler temperatures prevail for this evening game, with the forecast calling for temperatures in the upper 30s and mostly cloudy skies, according to AccuWeather. Winds will be mild and there’s only a slim precipitation probability, but it will be humid.

Saturday, April 5 vs. Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 1:05 p.m.

Temperatures are a bit cooler than normal at 47 degrees with a 25% chance of precipitation in the afternoon. It will be another humid and cloudy Rochester day. Bruce the Bat Dog will make his 2025 season debut.

Sunday, April 6 vs. Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 1:05 p.m.

Afternoon rain showers are likely, with the probability of precipitation reaching 80% in the afternoon. Conditions will be cloudy with less than 0.2 inches of rain expected and wind gusts up to 16 mph.

The Red Wings will almost never postpone a game prior to the gates opening with rain in the forecast. If a game is rained out, it is rescheduled for a doubleheader the next time the teams play, though a ticket to a rainout game can be used for any regular season game in the same season.
