DCR, I couldn't agree with you more...

I would argue that AW is more LB than Safety. I understand that he's really not custom built for either position, but his inability to cover TEs (especially right down the seam) makes him a lower liability underneath at LB.

I've never heard a player who talks the talk, without walking the walk more than AW. He's been selected to the pro bowl by being the NFCs only SS who gets into the highlight reels for huge hits every week. The rest of the SS's don't make monster hits every week, because they're too busy covering guys (1st... then supporting the run 2nd)!

Look at the difference Troy P makes when he returns to action for the Steelers... that's the type of impact an elite SS can make on a defense. I honestly think we're better off with AW riding the pine, than covering ANY TE in this league... He's obviously too great an athlete to sit on the bench, so put him where he can help... as a roving LB.

I think what he is saying that offensive players have the advantage. I'll take my shots with Antonio Gates against ANYONE in the league single coverage. His combination of size, speed, strength, and athletic ability creates a mismatch against every defensive player in the league. Even Revis and Asomugha. One man is not enough to cover him. Period.

But the SS in the NFL are also fast and strong and have great athletic ability and so too the wide receivers yet CBs handle WRs why can't Safeties handle TEs? I can understand LBs being over matched and that is what OCs are looking for but all-pro safeties? I still don't get it.

Antonio Gates is a freak of nature. Has anyone ever been able to contain him?? The only thing that has ever slowed him down were injuries. All that being said, Davis was a bad hire. He wasn't Whiz's 1st choice, but a bad decision just the same. The biggest mistake made by the Cardinals was forcing Whiz to retain Pendy. That single decision is the reason why this defense is still not where it should be.

Denver seems to have him under control. He hasn't had 100 yards against them since game one in 2007. In game two that year he had 1 catch for 24 yards. (probably wasn't 100% in that game but I don't know for sure.)

Of course this is how threads go off on tangents. I asked why it was so hard for safeties to cover TEs and all the responses were about how great Antonio Gates is. The Cards have been hammered by TEs for years. Gates ability has nothing to do with the discussion.

Because for starters, it's not their only job. The evolution of the TE is fascinating to me. Other than QB, SS is the hardest position to play. You have to be big and strong enough to play to shed blockers and help in run support. Their extra weight, normally causes them to lose their speed, fluidity of motion. Now players that had the height and speed of WR's are being moved to TE instead. The Gates, Davis, Finley types. 20 and 30lbs heavier than the prototypical WR size, yet can still run at the same speed as WR's. You have guys like Davis running a 4.38 40 time and it's not fair. These guys are bigger and stronger than CBs, yet typically much faster than SS/FS.

That makes sense. Even though Boldin didn't really fit in that category the Cards used him in the same way at times. It would be good if the Cards would get a guy like those you mention. And then actually throw him the ball.
