Windows XP SP3 has problems

May 14, 2008 by shogan in The Pit Blog

On Wednesday, May 7th 2008, Microsoft released the long awaited Windows XP SP3. Almost immediately hundreds of users registered complaints ranging from complete crashes to looping reboots. Similar problems have accompanied previous service packs and are usually the result of conflicting software.

Now, a few days later, it’s known that many of the reports are specific to HP Computers with AMD processors. Copies of Windows intended for Intel-based machines were used by OEMs on AMD-based computers. According to Microsoft the blame sits squarely on HP and possibly other OEMs

Jesper Johansson, a well respected MVP in Windows Security, has been helpful in identifying this problem and was quoted in a May 12th Article from Gregg Keizer of ComputerWorld. “The problem is that HP, and possibly other OEMs, deploy the same image to Intel-based desktops that they do to AMD-based desktops”. Many of us already know the problems associated with installing the wrong drivers on a system and this is exactly the same situation. Thankfully this problem is restricted to HP desktop models and does not affect their laptops.

In addition to the above problem there is a separate “no boot” situation specific to the Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard, which also is designed for AMD processors. If you are seeing the error code: STOP:0x000000A5 after installing SP3 then you can use a USB flash drive as a temporary fix. Once you’ve installed a USB flash drive or other secondary storage device you will be able to boot your computer. This certainly is not convenient but will help until the problem is properly solved.

A flurry of fixes immediately after releasing a major service pack is nothing new to Windows users. The unlimited configuration possibilities almost assure there will be some necessary adjustments. Microsoft seems to be reacting quickly this time, with updates coming every day since SP3s original release.

There is no doubt this problem will be rectified but PC Pitstop cannot recommend installing Windows XP SP3 at this time. Information on the issues addressed with this important update can be found in our recent article "Windows SP3: The Long Journey".

For those who have already installed this service pack and are experiencing problems, we suggest referencing Microsoft Help and Support document KB888372 dated May 6th, 2008. In some cases the fix can be as easy as using your Add/Remove programs utility to remove the offending service pack. You can find assistance with SP3 removal from this Microsoft Support Document "How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 3 from your computer". Keep checking with us for updates on this important service pack.

Wow, guess I dodged a bullet then. I have this exact MB and SP3 works fine on it for me. Actually, I have SP3 on my PC and my laptop, and have had no problems. These problems are likely a great minority.

Unlike Vista that just sucks all around. :p

I think I have that motherboard too. Unfortunately I am already on Vista though.

I have vista, never given me any problems.

I'm glad it works right for someone. I want to try it, but everyone I know that uses it keeps telling me they have nothing but trouble with it. I would need to add more RAM before I tried it, I have a "meager" 2 Gigs right now. It's just such a resource hog, I have avoided it so far.

I just want it for DX10, I have a DX10 card, but with XP Pro, I can only use DX 9. :(

I've got 2GB and it is slow. IE crashes everytime I close it, (switched to Firefox)

It's due for its biannual format.

I have heard that from others too. It's just crazy that an OS would take 4 Gigs of RAM before it works right. XP Pro SP 3 flies on 2 Gigs (2x1 Gig in Dual Channel.)

When I upgrade my PC again, I'll probably try Vista since I pretty much have to. I'm just holding out as long as I possibly can. I really like Win XP.

You don't have to. Last I heard, they plan on extending the life of XP.

I heard that too, hope it's true. I'm holding out till the very last day. ;)

If you are doing it for gaming, I'd hold out until the games you play no longer support it, or you upgrade your equipment.

Most of the time, no longer receiving updates from MSFT is a good thing. :)

I had a problem with installing SP3, I had to do a clean reboot (which is basically shutting down all non essential services in MSCONFIG. I was getting the looping reboots. I have an EVGA 680i motherboard which I guess has problems.

After I did the clean reboot I was able to install no problem and my machine has been solid.

I have 3 gigs of ram, seems to work fine. But on my last PC, I had vista and it was only an Athlon XP 3200+ and I had 2 gigs of ram. Seemed to work fine there too.

Personally for home use Vista has been fine... I have 4 computers running at home, two on Vista, two on XP pro... At work though Vista just sucks in a work environment. I tried to get XP on the last two computers we bought but there are no XP drivers for some of the hardware that is on those two units...

Have not had an issue with SP3 at work managing 32 desktops that all have been updated, no problems yet... 2 HP's with AMD processors... 2 compaq's with AMD processors (which is the same pretty much so lets go with 4)

For what it's worth, I got an auto update notification from HP yesterday saying a patch was ready to be installed on my computer to fix the issue involving HP/AMD/SP3... after installing it, I added Windows Service Pack 3 and had no issues

That's pretty much my expirence. I have 7 computers at home, 3 have XP pro, 1 Vista 32bit, and 3 Vista 64bit. My work laptop came w/ Vista and lucky for me they offered XP drivers as it sucked in the work environment.
I've not tried vista on a machine with less than 4gigs though, so I can't speak to that.

I did have a friend who got one of those fancy little sony laptops that only come with Vista and drivers are available only for Vista. I was able to get all the hardware info and took drivers from other companies using the same parts to install after installing XP pro. It worked out just fine, though took me awhile to track down drivers that would work.
