I thought we had a wine thread here, but can't find it. Well, I'll regret turning everyone on to this, but I have been sipping a Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon called Roots1 -- 2005 vintage is what I've had so far -- and it is so yummy! Not a mouth-shakingly big ol' red, but luxurious, rich, buttery and with hints of tobacco, vanilla and just loads and loads of berries, and a nice medium-long finish. Runs around $10-$11.

It is grown on it's own cabernet rootstock, which is extremely unusual -- almost all wines are grafted on to other rootstocks selected for disease resistance, and it does actually affect the quality and taste of the grapes.

I've had that and it is really good. You have a good nose for wine IMO. But when it comes to cheaper stuff nothing beats a Smoking Loon. Try a Smoking Loon anything and you will swear off all other wines under $15 forever.

My favorite wine is Chateau St. Jean Merlot from 2002. Its damn good. $25 - $27 a bottle is more than I usually spend on wine, but this stuff is worth it. They make a less expensive version, which is good, but not as good. That one is around $13 making it more practical.

Wow, zenny! Thanks for the recommendation. I stopped by Cost Plus on my way home today to get some drinks and grabbed a bottle of this on your word.

You are right, this is a really good wine. I especially love the finish! It really lingers and is so soft.

This is some really good stuff...surprisingly well priced!

Im not a big wine girl, but I've been to a bunch of places looking for this, even BevMo.

Where do you normally get yours? (besides CostCo... which I havent been to yet)

I'm sipping on a Smoking Loon Cabernet Sauvignon tonight.

I'll keep my eyes open for the Roots1, it sounds good.

Albertson's has Roots1 on sale right now for $8 but it looks like many stores only have the 2006, which I have not tried. The '05 is ready to drink right now. I also got it ('05) at a Basha's -- not AJ's, regular Basha's. BevMo didn't have it. CostCo didn't -- haven't looked at the nearby Cost Plus yet.

Tried it, too sweet for me.

I found this Merlot at a local wine shop. One of the best $12 bottles I've had. Mmmm.

Developed and intense fruit from this harvest has produced one of our most full-bodied merlots yet! Deep cherry fruit hits both the nose and palate upon the first sip, followed by soft hints of summer anise. Touches of pipe tobacco and spicy oak lend weight to the finish, trailed by firm, assertive tannins. Enjoy this wine with a wide range of food: from pasta to hearty meat dishes, or of course, all by itself!

can i drink wine while dieting/cutting?

Not a very wise move, your body pretty much shuts down any fat burning & muscle building in order to get the alcohol out of your system. However, I’m sure a glass or two every once in a while won’t make much of a difference.

OK, time to resurrect this thread.

A couple of really nice, reasonable Chardonnays:

Columbia Crest Grand Estates (2007 if you can find it) -- under $7 at CostCo. I like the Gr.Est. better than the more expensive CC Horse Heaven Hills or whatever the name is.

My new absolute favorite is Snap Dragon 2007 Chardonnay (WS 87 or 88) -- normally around $8-$9, but this week on sale at Basha's for $5.99 (if you can still find it, most stores were sold out within 2 days -- if not in stock, ask for a rain check for a couple bottles). This is like drinking a semi-dry peach nectar with a hint of tangerine/spiciness, vanilla, and a wisp of oak, with nice balance and a tasty finish. With ice and some sparkling mineral water it makes a spectacular wine spritzer for a warm summer evening. I think it would make a kick-ass white sangria, too. It is not a grown-up complex Chardonnay, but it is a really wonderful quaffer. (the Snap Dragon reds did not rate nearly as well on WS, alas)

Also nice, from Chile, is Veramonte 2007 Riserva Casablanca Valley Chardonnay, available in the $10-12 range.

(Recall that I like buttery, round Chardonnays, not the real acidic or citrusy ones, and choose accordingly.)

2007 is considered one of the finest Chardonnay vintages in recent California history, btw. And I signed up for a Wine Spectator online subscription, so if there are particular wines of interest, I'll be glad to look them up for you.

I'm a red wine lover and rarely dabble in the whites. However, this time of year I do enjoy a nice Savignon Blanc.

My neighbor recently moved to England and asked me to watch the house. Since they are going to be gone a long time they said, "Help yourself to the wine." I knew they took a lot of wine-tasting vacations and they spent freely. :)

My favorite winery so far is Comfort Cellars in the Texas Hill Country as their bottles proclaim. Their Chenin Blanc is so good I plan to spend an afternoon going through all the boxes to see if there are more than the two bottles I've found so far.

I'm also fond of St. Julien Winery in Paw Paw, MI. My grandmother had a farm there and we spent many happy hours in their tasting room. Paw Paw (which is a dinky little town) also has a wine and harvest festival in September that no one in Western Michigan misses.

Vegas, baby, yeah!
My favorite red is a Cakebread 2005 Cab. Smooth, fruity, and it used to be readily available and fairly inexpensive (less than ~20 a bottle). Now, I can hardly find it, and where I do run across it in a restaurant, it runs around 60-75.

2007 Schloss-Gobelsburg "gobelsburger" Riesling. Super minerally, dry and crisp, hints of peach, grapefruit or apricot.

Super refreshing. Bout 20 bucks a bottle. Worth every penny.
