Wisconsin freshman point guard Daniel Freitag has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

Freitag was Wisconsin's top recruit in the class of 2024, ranked as the No. 119 player in the country, No. 12 point guard and No. 3 recruit from the state of Minnesota. The former four-star prospect played just 29 total minutes over 14 appearances in his one season with the program, recording a total of two points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Freitag is the second Badger to enter the portal since the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, following reserve guard Camren Hunter. Both played minor roles in Wisconsin's rotation this past season. Kamari McGee (22 minutes, 6.5 points per game) led the team's bench rotation, with walk-on freshman Jack Janicki (11.4 minutes, 1.9 points) emerging into a significant role. Freitag and Hunter saw limited playing time as a result, mostly appearing in the closing minutes of blowout wins.

Freitag enters the portal with three years of eligibility remaining.

Freitag is the first major departure from Wisconsin's roster this offseason. He figured to contend for a prominent role in 2025-26, looking to fulfill the sky-high expectations that followed his commitment. Wisconsin enters 2025-26 with John Blackwell and Janicki set to lead guard rotation, with a majority of the minutes still up for grabs -- whether for incoming transfers or talented underclassmen.

Wisconsin's incoming class of 2025 includes four-star in-state standout Zach Kinziger and promising international recruit Hayden Jones at guard. The program has a strong pipeline of talent at the position. However, the 2025-26 rotation is still very much up in the air.

Freitag's transfer interest and eventual landing spot may indicate whether he had a real chance at significant minutes with the Badgers next season.
