Living in Florida & having much spent time on the campus, FSU can’t be put in the same group as the other. They went to the Seminoles and asked permission to use their name. The spear ceremony at their games start was choreographed by the tribe. The tribe receives a significant number of scholarships, which have educated many. The name is not used in a demeaning way. They are attempting to get the students to stop using the chop. Cheerleaders never do. The tribe didn’t request that but the university authorities believed it to be in bad taste. The Seminoles own all the Casinos in Florida though there are some floating small ships. On the whole their standard of living and opportunities are among the best Native Americans get. BTW, I’m a Midwest guy who never went to FSU.I agree.
But I’m a big fan of the teams that have abolished their names like the Atlanta and Cleveland baseball teams, the Chicago Hockey team, the Kansas City football team, the Edmonton CFL football team, the Golden State basketball team, and the Florida State college football team to name a few.
And don’t get me started on the Redlegs, White Sox, and Red Sox.
