Pat Shurmer will be fired on Monday along with GM Tom Herckert. They said that they will try and bring in Ray Horton on Tuesday for a interview. So it starts.......

or they are doing it to get the Rooney law out of the way early, so they can pursue somebody else. It is not right, but that is what teams do

Very true. Horton may get interviewed by every team with an opening and not get a job - just so those teams can have a token black HC candidate during their search.

Whatever. I could be wrong of course, but I think Horton is another Dave McGinnis if the Cards were to promote him to head coach. I have zero faith in him fixing the offense, and his defense already laid down on him. And, he's pissed off, and seems ready to dump, both Dockett and Wilson with no comparable replacements on the roster already.

It's been pretty much a foregone conclusion that Shurmur and Heckert were gone once Haslim bought the team. I haven't heard about the Horton rumor but I think the Browns will try and hire a big name. Gruden is still my pick to be the next Browns coach.

He's the Rooney candidate.

That said, don't be surprised if he gets hired away. Some are expecting up to 11 teams to part with Head Coaches. Someone may be willing to actually take a chance on RH this year.

Potential candidates:
CLE
NYJ
BUF
TEN
JAX
KC
SD
PHI
DET
CHI
CAR
ARI

That's a lot of teams, and Andy Reid and Jon Gruden are only two people. I say there's about a 60% chance Horton leaves this year.

Here is something to consider. How much does Horton want to be a head coach? He just might be curious right now but even if he did want to be a head coach, it does not mean he finds some of those teams desirable and could turn them down due to their situation. That goes for the Cardinals as well to an extent

Jet, I can't find the links at the moment, but I've seen in several Darren Urban feature stories and/or blogs quotes from Horton essentially indicating that being an HC in this league is his ultimate goal and he sounded enthusiastic in a way that makes me think he'd take the first opportunity. That's what I'm basing my opinion on. I hope he'd wanna stay with us instead though...

I did not discredit him once in this post. I said this is what 'teams' do to black coaches they interview...and I do not like it. What do I know about Horton? He is an excellent DC. Is he a good head coach? That remains to be seen but that is surely a valid possibility with the way he got the defense playing... that will still require a leap of faith by a organization and I think it is possible. If Horton said it is his ultimate goal to head coach, I'm sure he meant to do it and do it well. It still does not mean he feels the time is right yet to do it now. I take him as a smart man, and smart men sometimes set their ultimate goals into the future when they know they can do the job with enough experience at their disposal. How enthusiastic he may appear when asked does not mean to me you can take that as an indication since it would not be very intelligent when talking about ones dreams to do it in a withdrawn manner, it would make him appear that he could not achieve that ultimate goal one day which very well could be this next season. Only Horton knows. These interviews are going to end up being like a Dr. Seuss book for us Cardinal fans. Horton hears a who from this team and then this team :)

Everyone seems to forget that this was Whisenhunt's first HC gig. Gotta start somewhere!

I have a question.. Does Horton have another year on his contract and if so will the Cardinals allow him to interview with another team?

I thought it was written into most contracts that a team cannot deny interviews if they are for HC jobs.

I believe that teams are only allowed to deny the interview if it is a lateral move. They cannot stop a promotion.

Also, the Rooney Rule is in place so owners are forced to interview minority candidates. The idea is to get the proverbial foot in the door. Once they are being interviewed it is up to the candidate to win the job.

The NFL should put the Cards, the Browns, the Lions and the Bills in the same Division. That way one of them might actually be able to have a winning season.

Those 4 teams have combined for only 7 winning seasons 2000-2012. 7 out of 52 chances.

Never mind. One of them would become the first 6-10 team to make the playoffs.

SHHH...Don't say that, for it may come to be known as the Contraction division.

And our run defense is terrible. 28th in the league, I think. Run. And stop the run. We can't do either.

that is a product that also goes hand and hand with our offense not being able to stay on the field with sustained drives and the opposing team then slowly wearing down the defense with the run

Don't know how legit this guy is, but I heard the Browns are going after one of two people, Chip Kelly or Doug Marrone, and Marrone is said to #1 target.

Marrone may be the one guy I would be okay with if they let Whiz go.
