The Worcester Red Sox fell behind early to the Rochester Red Wings and could not overcome the big deficit, losing 1203 on Saturday.
Andrew Pickney hit a three-run home run to put the hosts ahead in the bottom of the first. Andrew Knizner followed with a solo shot to left-center, pushing the visitors’ lead to four entering the second.
Worcester chipped away with Nate Eaton leading off the second with a single to right field and Yasmani Grandal drilling a double to cut the deficit to three. But the Red Wings ended the frame without further damage and followed with another four-run burst in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from Brady House.
Despite getting runners on base in the third and the fourth, the WooSox failed to bring any runs across and were sat down in order in the fifth. An fielding error in the bottom half of the frame allowed two more runs to cross home and extend Rochester’s lead to nine.
The visitors’ woes bringing runners home continued through the late innings and Rochester added two more runs in the seventh off another two-run home run from House.
Marcelo Mayer scratched across a couple of runs in the top of the ninth for the visitors with a two-RBI double to left field, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Red Wings closed out the win.
The WooSox (9-9) will face Rochester on Easter Sunday, Apr. 20 in the final game of their six-game series with the Red Wings, with the first pitch set for 1:05 p.m.
