Wearing a superman outfit doesn't make a dunk original my friend. The contest blows and has for a lon long long time.

Phone booths? Candles? Costumes? Not really what the contest is about JMO.

Time to end it.

Yes it does make for a dunk original. It will be remembered while I've already forgotten Nate's this year. It's about entertainment. That was entertaining. I would tune in for that. I would not tune in for this garbage.

Until it is worked into the CBA that the league can force some stars to perform the players will always take a vacation over the crappy payouts and the chance of embarrassing themselves.

And the league will never get that because the teams would really want them to rest.

In a van...down by the river.
Pads....on....the....dunker.
Defenders.....in.....the.....paint.

Or,maybe even put pads on certain celebrities and watch them get dunked on.
I'd like to see Dwight Howard dunk on Rush Limbaugh. Ok ,maybe that isn't such a good idea.

the NBA stars are lazy these days. I guess they would rather look pretty for the camera sitting down and texting their lineup for the evening party rather than put on a real show for the fans. I think they are too scared to lose to a 5 foot freak. During the competitions last night Larry Legend and MJ must have been spitting their boos out at the bar ALA homer simpson watching the PLOW KING commercial!

I wouldn't go so far as to call them lazy. They work harder than the majority of every player on this planet.

Not to mention that the upper echelon players are also involved in international play and any time off should be welcomed by these guys.

I say invite 10 guys and go back to the format when you get two attempts. A successful dunk on the 10th attempt is pretty lame no matter how difficult.

yes you are right about that. I just want to see the NBA stars actually wow me in these events. Nate Robinson dunking and Rajon Rondo playing horse does nothing for me. I think the stars just like to relax on ALL Star weekend rather than participating.

It was awful. Made even worse by the fact that at least last year had two guys who cared about making it a show (Howard and Nate), and then their thunder was stolen by LeBron--who backed out this year. Frankly, the contest should be between LeBron and that guy who dunked on him. No chance to steal the video...

I agree completely, and I think we'd see a much higher success rate on dunks - how many of these guys actually practice for the dunk contest knowing they've got a ridiculous amount of time to fail on as many dunk attempts as possible before finally getting it right on like the 8th or 9th try?

I know guys like Dominique, Dr. J, etc., used to have a plan in place for which dunks in what rounds they were going to do. The guys now APPEAR like they are making stuff up on the fly during the contest. They definitely need to have a plan in place. The guys now are not showmen. The NBA needs to assign coaches to each player. Dr. J could coach one guy. Dominique another. And so on. Maybe that would help bring back the quality of dunks in the contest!

If I was going to be super radical and change the contest, I would random draw guys in groups of two. Then these guys would play offense and defense with a time clock, and have 2 shots on offense each to get off a dunk over their guy or be rejected by their opponent! LOL!

I'd say the whole night was a dud. All-Star Saturday used to be a must see event for me but this year I found it really hard to get motivated (partly because the olympics were on).

Between the billion commercial breaks, corporate sponsorship up the wazoo and the terrible flow to the whole night, I think it's time to redo the whole night.

And this guy would have destroyed any of the 4 competitors there:
