Would you do this trade?

Would you trade Tyran Mathieu for a mid 2nd Rd. Pick?

  • I'm down for the 2nd and getting some cash for retaining Calais

  • No way I'm parting with the Honey Badger

This year he has to prove he can stay healthy
When he is 100% is our best player
This is the thing with him. Your really rolling the dice that he can be your leader for 16 + games. You can"t lead from the sidelines.

If another team makes the offer, if it helps your team in a meaningful way.....ie, draft pick and another durable interchangable vet signing.......

I'm going to repost this, because even if you wanted to trade HB, you cant do it without sabotaging the salary cap

The Cards would LOSE cap space as the team would take on more dead money than what Badger costs against the cap by remaining on the team.

Badger 2017 cap hit = $ 8.1mil
Dead money if cut/traded = $17.1mil

In short, it actually does the exact opposite of what you want the outcome of the trade to be.

You still want to do that deal?

the problem with this is if he can't prove he can stay healthy this year, he's a completely sunk cost with zero value. I don't have any problem with people wondering it they could get something for him now before it's too late and thinking it's heresy to consider it/every GM in the league would jump on giving up a 2nd rounder for a guy with a very checkered injury past seems to be a little unrealistic to me.

To be honest, with his injury history, I might even be surprised if he could fetch a 2nd rounder right now. Sure, his potential for greatness is there, but history shows a potential for more injuries might be greater at this point... sadly.

Medical science has come a long way and the ACL at times is stronger than before when a player is young after the surgery. Sounds strange, but the fact it was his knees has me less concerned, now if it was his back I would be concerned about him being a injury away from the sideline

but it's not just the two ACLs... at least not for me. It's him breaking his hand in his second season, busting up his shoulder last year... it's a ho of injuries to a lot of different parts of the body, making people wonder if he's just not built for the pounding of the league.

as for the medical science... can you tell me another guy who's been a superstar who had torn ACLs in both knees?

Your talking about the bonus $$ he signed for correct? That's what the Cardinals would be on the hook for salary cap wise. At the same time you'd replace his salary with a rookie contract @ 4 years, and possibly one who could contribute right away. Deep draft. But you're right that it wouldn't help with getting Campbell re signed this off season.
