Wow, Orton has $8.9 million salary

My new preference:

1. Sign Vince Young. Incentive laden deal.
2. Trade for Orton. Don't re-negotiate his deal, see what he does.
3. Keep Skelton as third QB.

CUT every other QB on the roster.

Young/Orton battles it out for #1.

Better, IMO, than losing DRC for Kolb.

I know that some people are already all over you about this, but there's no evidence to support this idea. Orton is not a backup; he's been a starting QB the last three seasons.

Even beyond that, not only is he better than every backup quarterback in the NFL, he's better than a ton of starters. Off the top of my head, I'd definitely rather have Orton than Jason Campbell (OAK), Tim Tebow (DEN), Alex Smith (SF), Charlie Whitehurst/Tavaris Jackson (SEA), Matt Stafford (DET), whoever Cincy is going to start, Donnie McNabb (MIN), John Beck (WAS), and Chad Henne (MIA). That's before getting into guys like Hasselback and Gerrard, where there's a little bit of an argument. That's 9 of 32 teams in the NFL that he could probably start for--a quarter of the league.

K9, you make a good point, but if Stafford is healthy, he has to start over Orton. Same for Tebow. For the purposes of developing the young guy.

Right, but those aren't win/loss decisions. Orton probably should start over Newton, as well. But if you're just talking about production and not upside (of which Orton's is limited), then Orton could start for a quarter of the teams in the NFL, at least.

Perception is reality for a lot of people. Orton doesn't look like a QB. They compare his weak chin and neck beard to Brady's lantern jaw and hollywood hair instead of looking at what he's done on the field.

And his game against the Cards. It just confirmed/perpetuated my misperception of him.

Our options are basically:
1.Make an aggressive move to get Orton or wait for him to leave and be forced to bid against ourselves for Kolb. It's already been stated that we rate the two closely. We could pay a 3rd and 5th right now for Orton.
2. Or we could wait and pay a 1st and DRC for Kolb.
3. Or it will be Trent Edwards or someone like that against Skelton for the starting job.
