I imagine they're in an even higher meltdown mode right now as they just got backdoor swept by the Devil Rays to get knocked down to last place. Every Yank not named George Steinbrenner better have their resume updated.

THAT is hilarious.

There is no team in sports that I detest more than the Yankees.

That one guys post is great: "The only thing more embarrasing than needing $200 million in payroll to win is having it and sucking"

Classic.

If A-Rod is so great how come every team he plays for sucks? I read an article in either SI or TSN where some of his former teammates nicknamed him "the cooler" because he cools off every team he goes to.

I think its still a little early to count theYankees out. If they are still playing badly by June then i would agree,

The only way to get them bakc to respectable is to build up their farm system. That'ws how they did it in 80's.

But with the exception of 1980 and '81, the Yankees weren't very good in the 80s.

1980 103-59 1st in Division
1981 59-48 won AL pennant
1982 79-83 5th in division
1983 91-71 3rd in division
1984 87-75 3rd in division
1985 97-64 2nd in division
1986 90-72 2nd in division
1987 89-73 4th in division
1988 85-76 5th in division
1989 74-87 5th in division
1990 67-95 7th in division

the problem now with the yankees is that they have a payroll full of players whose contracts no other team can afford to touch.

Bernie - 36 year old making $12.3mil......DESIGNATED HITTER
Mussina - 36 year old making $19mil.....with an ERA of 4.5
Giambi - 34 year old making $13.4mil....with steroid inflated stats, now batting .208
Brown - 40 year old making $16mil.....with an ERA of 8.25

right there, you have a payroll that rivals our D'Backs....but it has guys that no team would take.

the rest of the inflated roster is full of guys making over $10mil per year on the wrong end of 35.

this team doesnt have a bright future. they've got NO farm prospects, and unless they want to overpay for yet more aging talent, they arent going to be good.

they have become the Knicks....and i couldnt be happier.

Well, the "Boss" certainly isn't going to fire himself.

Joe Torre is a good guy. He brought NL skills into the AL. He perservered through the death of his brother Frank (former 1B with the Braves). He kept his dignity, despite working for Steinbrenner.

He deserves better than the whims of his owner.

The Yankees lost tonight 6-3 in ten as Rivera took the loss. The Yankees better hope George's horse wins the Kentucky Derby. :biglaugh:

That thread is really hysterical. Poor whiny babies - five bad weeks and they think they are the new cursed Red Sox! Well, uh...got a ways to go to earn that badge. But an 86-year drought in NYY-land - I could accept that.

That would be awesome! If that should happen, I can't see NYY fans reacting much like BoSox fans--the cynicism would be there, but larger numbers would just jump ship like rats escaping a burning building.

This is pathetic.... I can't believe that the Yankee fans are already packing it in. Just sad. They need to have a decade of losing.

The dominating Yankee teams of the '20's (owned by Col. Jacob Rupert, I believe) and their teams of the '50's (owned by Del Webb and Dan Topping) were back in the day when the GM's were allowed to plan and propose the roster moves (with perhaps final approval of the owner).

Nowadays outspoken owners act as GM's and their GM's do the legwork.

If I were an owner, I'd want my General Manager to plan and execute the moves . . . and my Business Manager to handle his area of expertise . . . and my Community Relations Director to handle that . . . and my Marketing Director to handle that . . . etc.

An owner giving these professionals an excuse (by pushing them to the background) does just that -- it gives them an excuse. It removes their accountability. It leads to failure in the long run.

Cases in point. The Yankees decline this season (and being trapped with a payroll they can't dump). The D'backs following our one Championship.

The temptation of media exposure in these times has led owners to becoming celebrities and stepping on the toes of the professionals they hired to run the operations.

Gawd, if they were Phillies phans like myself, they'd have a lot to whine about. We are fans of officially the losingest team ever in the history of all pro sports with 1 championship in 130 years or so.

Cry me a river.

But that was only 25 years ago. Bowa is gone. Tied with Seattle for the least games behind for a team in last place in its division.

Half full, not half empty. ;)

For all their bluster, Yankee fans are THE most fair-weather fans in all of sports. They only come out if and when the team is winning, and are quick to turn on the team when they lose.

I'm happiest for Randy Johnson. He strong arms his way out of AZ to go to NY so he can "win." Now the Yankees blow and the D-Backs are 1/2 game out of first. Enjoy your "winning" Randy! :biglaugh:

They're baaaaaack:

Yankees win ninth straight

It may be great for ESPN & Yankee fans, but it sucks for the rest of us - now it's back to all Yankees, all the time!! :barf:

BTW, the one Yankee I hate seeing do well is Tino "Big Pu**y" Martinez - I will never forgive him for attacking Miggy on the mound, then getting virtually no suspension, which was even further reduced!!

Wow. How did that happen so fast.

The Yankees are back over .500, only five games behind first place Baltimore and three games behind the BoSox.
