As Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells always said, "If a player shows you who he is, believe him."

The ambiguity of this quote is striking---because it works two ways.

In other words, if a player steps up and shows that he can be productive---you believe in the talent.

Conversely, if a player is unproductive---you question his ability to make a positive impact on your team.

This week, S Tony Jefferson made some plays at the safety position that told the coaches who he is, talent-wise.

As we know talent isn't everything---attitude and approach matter---chemistry with teammates matters.

Based on the first few weeks of training camp, therefore, here are the surprise players who have shown up:

G Paul Fanaika
WR Juron Brown
WR Charles Hawkins
WR Kerry Taylor
DE Ronald Talley
LB Zach Nash
LB Kenny Demens
CB Javier Arenas
CB Justin Bethel
S Tony Jefferson

In my opinion, all of these players will make the roster, save possibly Demens, whom the coaches may hope to sneak through waivers and onto the PS.

Making cases:

QB Ryan Lindley
RB Alfonso Smith
G Senio Kelemete
C Mike Gibson
NT Padric Scott
CB Bryan McCann

Underperforming:

RB Ryan Williams
G Chilo Rachal
TE Jeff King
NT David Carter
LB Reggie Walker
CB Jamell Fleming

2013 Draft Picks

1. Jonathan Cooper---starter at LG. Solid and improving each day. Coaches starting to showcase his skills in the offense.

2. Kevin Minter---challenging to start at ILB---brings much needed thumping and finishing ability to the middle of defense.

3. Tyrann Mathieu---could well wind up being the MVP of the nickel and dime packages---is showing the talent of a first round pick. Super productive.

4. Earl Watford---big, strong pile mover who is making steady progress. Adjusting from small college competition to the pros is rarely easy or swift. See Justin Bethel. Watford becomes the Bethel of next year's team, imo, and there is no way the coaches will risk trying to pass him through waivers.

5. Alex Okafor---starting to make a push. Looks the part. Strong and active.

6. Stepfan Taylor---has emerged at the clear #2 RB---has been showing why he is Stanford's all-time leading rusher---has wiggle, vision and strength.

7. Andre Ellington---perfect compliment to Mendenhall and Taylor because of his speed and elusiveness.

8. D.C. Jefferson---yes he's had the drops, but has shown up to be quite the physical specimen and is now showing exemplary work habits.

All these draftees are going to make the roster...which goes to show not only the talent that this group possesses, but the talent of the new GM Steve Keim in building a draft.

I don't think Fonso has shown up. I've not been impressed with him, at all and the sooner he's bumped down to 4th RB the better.

Tony Jefferson made a huge "look at me, coach" case on Saturday.

So DC Jefferson showed up by just showing up? Mystified by what people see in this guy.

Why I don't buy Gibson. The team brought in two centers after Camp started, indicating that they weren't saitisfied with the position. And Colledge is now practasing at center which means to me that he'll be the backup center. I guess it's possible that Gibson will start and Sendlein will be cut, but I doubt it. Lindley seems to have shown up and I'm not sure Walker is underperforming as he was great in OTA's. IMO, if he's cut it's because he's just not one of the best 53. But with DW out for the first four games, and because he's good on ST's, I see him making the team.

Saved by the lack of competition?
I think that is a big part but also that he is a physical beast. I would prefer he goes PS and continues learning into next year because if we can groom him, hes a very large athletic TE. He is new to the position in general, not just in the pros so his learning curve is steeper.

I hope at least one coach was watching the game no matter who was running.

I've seen a number of Kevin Minter's games at LSU. Fine, active and good tackler, but it's only on this board that I find him described as a "thumper".

I think the Cardinals brought in some young centers to see if one of them could be a good PS player---one the coaches could possibly groom into a competitor at the position next year.

The coaches will have to decide whether they are comfortable with Colledge as the backup option at C, and if they are, Gibson doesn't make it. If they aren't, Gibson makes it (or a waiver wire or trade pickup at C).

Last week I had Gibson making it---but Colledge showed up this week and had what appeared to be a very good week.

BA himself described him as a thumper. It's not just on this board. Minter's play has backed it up.

Me either, but I think a lot people like him because of that old saying in the NBA, 'you cannot teach size'.

I see a "project".

Guy has been playing Tight End for at least three years for a very competitive NCAA program at Rutgers. It's not clear what additional training he needs to get to stand out.

This isn't taking a defensive end and trying to turn him into an offensive tackle, and even Fred Wakefield easily made the transition in an offseason from being a terrible defensive end to being a terrible offensive lineman.

Does Jefferson really have that much further to go to reach the levels of other mediocre TE's who stay on the roster for more than one season?

Housler gets a pass, but he quite often fails to do much with it.

Might want to re-work the example... ;)

I see late round selections as players with potential who require a fair amount of close professional supervison to reach their full possibilities. I don't see much pass catching in his College background... thus, to my mind, a project.

Agreed.

Said that when he played for Rutgers, said it when the Cardinals drafted him, and saying it again now.

DC Jefferson is who I though he was.....awful.

The second coming of Leonard Pope, or Walter Reeves .... take your pick

Pope is still collecting cheques in the NFL.

Late-round selections very rarely get a "fair amount of close professional supervision" because there are 53 guys on the roster, and only about 30 of them make a meaningful contribution during the season. Late-round selections are late-round selections because their "full possibilities" are to be mediocre football players who are cheap labor and may or may not get a second contract with their team.

The point I think you're trying to make--that we're blowing a lot of electrons on a seventh-round pick--is true. But it speaks poorly of the front office that we're having to rely on a late-round pick to play well, because we didn't have a backup plan for Jeff King (who we knew was injured) and Rob Housler.

Speaking of which, Housler's had a VERY quiet training camp and preseason. When you listen to Palmer talk, he's very much the fourth option in the passing game. Bad vibes on a kid that I thought would do well in the new offense.

Agree that we should have done more on the T-end front. Reports were that Housler was catching everything in training camp with a fair number of down the seam throws. Wonder if the latter is what breaks out come the season.

Where are these reports? I checked Darren Urban's blog, which has been fairly exhaustive in cataloguing the successes in training camp, and he hasn't come up once: http://blog.azcardinals.com/?s=Rob+Housler

I don't remember an Urban or Weinfuss feature on Housler in quite some time. http://www.azcardinals.com/search-results?&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&q=Rob+Housler&sort=date
