I think they are saving the Housler big plays for the regular season.

I certainly hope that's the truth, but I'm skeptical. I thought the Cards were holding back a 2TE, playaction, deep passing offense the last three offseasons, and that never materialized.

You play the plays in the preseason that you're working on in practice. I just don't think that Palmer is not throwing to an open Rob Housler because he wants to hold those back for the regular season.

Agree, completely.

They said on the radio yesterday that Arians has said as much. They are hiding him in the preseason since Arians already know what Housler can do.

I already know what Housler can do as well. Not necessarily a good thing.

Where are these reports? I checked Darren Urban's blog, which has been fairly exhaustive in cataloguing the successes in training camp, and he hasn't come up once: http://blog.azcardinals.com/?s=Rob+Housler

I don't remember an Urban or Weinfuss feature on Housler in quite some time. http://www.azcardinals.com/search-results?&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&q=Rob+Housler&sort=date

I do remember reading a lot about housler before preseason/training camp started. At the time arians was praising him, saying hes a 80 catch guy and etc. Since then he has dissapeared.

So Arians said Housler was elite? :)

I wish they would have saved Fitzgerald for the regular season.

I don't think Fonso has shown up. I've not been impressed with him, at all and the sooner he's bumped down to 4th RB the better.

Tony Jefferson made a huge "look at me, coach" case on Saturday.

Agree 100%. I don't get the infatuation with Smith. He's a master of the 2-3 yard HB dive play. He doesn't see the hole and lacks burst. Smith is lucky that Williams has been a no-show to camp; otherwise, he'd be on the outside looking in.

As for Jefferson--I've been on his bandwagon since he was scooped up. I knew he had good cover skills, but he demonstrated good instincts last Saturday. I would like to see him get more reps against the 1s to see if this transfers. We'll see what happens after all of the PS games are played, but I have a hard time believing that he can be exposed to the waiver wire and not be picked up by another team. He's either on the 53 man roster or he's gonzo; practice squad is not an option.

So DC Jefferson showed up by just showing up? Mystified by what people see in this guy.

Yeah from the practices that I attended to the two Pre-Season games that I have watched, Jefferson looks like a lost rookie out there. As of right now I'm guessing he is practice squad material at best.

I've seen a number of Kevin Minter's games at LSU. Fine, active and good tackler, but it's only on this board that I find him described as a "thumper".

If you have a chance to attend a practice you will see why he is referred to as a thumper. This kid has some pop when tackling! Both on defense and special teams.

In rewatching part of Saturday's game, it sure looked like Tyrann Mathieu was out of position a couple times, especially during Bryant's catch, long run, then forced fumble. Powers looked like he was expecting help, but Mathieu left the center of the field in front of Bryant, leaving Dez wide open. There is a learning curve for Tyrann at safety.

Tony Jefferson should already have some of that knowledge, having played the position at O.U. I'd like to see him get some first half snaps this week.

High expectations before training camp started, almost complete silence since.

When I visited training camp last week and watched the 11 on 11 drills, I didn't see a single pass to Housler the day that I was there. It was almost like he was forgotten. Now that was just one day but it was a little bit discouraging.

In the new Cards offense, Patrick Peterson is the receiving threat and Housler is the decoy.

Dick Vitale would call him all airport team, looks great walking through an airport but it looks like so far he can't play.

I was watching his blocking because at his size you hope he'll be a great blocker, he missed lots of blocks. It's like they have Housler teaching him how to block or something makes the same mistakes Rob does.

Late-round selections very rarely get a "fair amount of close professional supervision" because there are 53 guys on the roster, and only about 30 of them make a meaningful contribution during the season. Late-round selections are late-round selections because their "full possibilities" are to be mediocre football players who are cheap labor and may or may not get a second contract with their team.

The point I think you're trying to make--that we're blowing a lot of electrons on a seventh-round pick--is true. But it speaks poorly of the front office that we're having to rely on a late-round pick to play well, because we didn't have a backup plan for Jeff King (who we knew was injured) and Rob Housler.

Speaking of which, Housler's had a VERY quiet training camp and preseason. When you listen to Palmer talk, he's very much the fourth option in the passing game. Bad vibes on a kid that I thought would do well in the new offense.

They're hiding him (-:

I noticed that Palmer is almost always looking downfield first, that's gotta be the Arians mantra.

Explains the red zone issues. They simply run out of real estate to run Arians' offense effectively.

That may be a role BA wants filling. Hit it. Don't fumble. Pick up positive yards. Pick up the blitz. Catch out of the backfield.

Of course, that's pretty much the same skills as Taylor, but there's nothing wrong with having a little depth.

What puzzles me is the urban legend (spread, I think, by Wolfley) that he's "3rd fastest on the team"). He sure doesn't look like he plays that fast.

That one was a head scratcher. I think his speed was average; nothing explosive. I don't think he sucks, he provides decent depth, but I'd rather have Rashard, Taylor and Andre ahead of him.

As for 3rd fastest? I can think of at least five players on the team faster than him. One of whom plays the same position as Smith (Andre).
