there has to be something done for competitive balance. I don't want to see baseball tank...but if your a fan of more than 1/2 the teams in the MLB...and you know your out of the playoffs on opening day....I dont think thats sustainable either.

The dbacks took a freakin decade of poor baseball to get to this point. We have been LUCKY...that we have drafted well, and have an owner who is prioritizing signing that home grown talent to longer term deals. If one part of this scenario changes....you either dont draft well, or you wont pay/cant afford to sign your young stars...then you have a no win situation for fans.

The players won't agree to a salary cap in part because the MLB owners won't agree to revenue sharing comparable to what the NFL and NBA have. Big market teams argue that they paid more for their franchises because they have more revenue because of the markets they're in, small market teams argue that there will never be a level playing field as long as teams like the Yankees, Dodgers and Mets can earn so much more, mostly through local broadcasting rights.

Also, the players have little incentive to change the current system - the big contracts drive the market.
