Mitch, if BA is trolling these boards as a way of shaping the team, I hope he listens to you. I'd like to see what Dysert can do, too. If he shows talent, I'd love to see him taking Stanton's spot. Yeah, I know, Stanton has a winning record as a back-up but he didn't show very much last year. (The year before, he was better. Not dazzling but not cringe-worthy.) Anyone with eyes can see that Drew has lost a step and isn't what he was.

Anyone except BA. I've mentioned it before because it truly bugs me. How can a good coach not see what appears to be evident to everyone else?

You know what I think? BA makes his decisions about players early on, then has difficulty adjusting those thoughts to the current reality as it evolves. When BA signed with the Cardinals, he announced that Stanton would be the starter (happily, Palmer came along and an adjustment was made). On some level, BA still believes Stanton has that starter-potential inside of him. He'll keep him on the roster until it's apparent to nearly everyone in the world that DS's ability has diminished.

We all watched when BA kept Butler on the team well past the time others thought he was a liability. BA made excuses for him, too, claiming the guy was better than he was, because he had been, once. BA didn't believe his eyes, only his memory. BA kept Cat when even Cat knew he stunk. BA made excuses for him, too, because he believed in the kicker's strong arm and saw his potential. The potential's still there; the only question is, will he ever get out of his head enough to reach it?

BA only moved on from those players after the rest of mankind started questioning why those players were still on this team. The voices haven't been raised quite loud enough in Stanton's case. Dysert is on the bubble. I hope he gets a chance to show what he's got.

If the team's looking at him as a replacement for Stanton, that's fine. A problem might develop if we do then draft a QBOF (you want a veteran backup, and won't carry four QBs), but there's no harm evaluating him through camp and the preseason with an eye at a backup slot.

Good points, Martin. BA is loyal to a fault at times -- and one has to wonder whether it more out of convenience than anything else. Stanton knows the offense -- it's almost as if the offense is in Portugese and BA doesn't want to try to teach a new QB the language.

And with regard to special teams -- it has been BA's blind spot for years now -- which may have to do with BA being preoccupied with running the offense, and helping to groom James Bettcher as the DC. From day one BA has taken a strong interest in the defense, which is great. Man, I remember when Buddy Ryan was HC and running the defense, he had what appeared to be a contempt and disregard for the offense. But with BA -- the STs are so bad that no one on his roster wants to be a punt returner -- have you ever seen so many chicken sheet punt and kickoff returns? A d we have arguably the most talented punt returner on the planet (Pat P.), when he wants to be. The one guy who ran hard and well, David Johnson, was taken off the assignment the minute he became the starter, which is fine if someone else could pick up the slack.

Just stop it Mitch. BA has coached several rookie and young QB's and they had great years with him speaking "Portugese". Tim Couch, Big Ben, Andrew Luck all played well for BA as young QB's. He can also take an older QB like Carson Palmer and coach him to some of his best years ever.

Who is Tim Coach and what does a clock in England have to do with the Cardinals?

I think Dysert could be a good number two now. Basically Stanton with his low completion rating fit himself in a niche of "do not make mistakes" and let the defense win or a speedster like JJ and Brown burn the opposing defense on a big play between the muck while a majority of the game is spent safe with hunt & pick low mistake oriented offense. That money going to Stanton would be better off going to Golden or DJ and their contracts on the horizon and no, I am not even remotely considering play DJ to the end of his contract and letting him vamos because the kid is very special

We don't know whether Dysert could be a good #2 now - because we haven't seen him run an offense let alone throw a regular season pass.

But that doesn't mean he shouldn't be given the opportunity to shine. I'm not at all unhappy about Stanton in his #2 role, but it's been a long time since he's proved he can still do it. Both Drew and Dysert should compete for the #2 role during preseason. Dysert needs to prove he's mastered the non-physical part of the game. Stanton needs to prove he can still execute physicallly. (This might favor Stanton because BA's job description for a #2 QB might stress the cerebral).

I'd love for Dysert to at least unseat Stanton this preseason. Stanton hasn't played well in awhile and I have virtually zero confidence in him.

As I said, I 'think' Zac could now because not only is bouncing from team to team a negative but it is also a positive because people keep giving him a chance to stick for a reason. I think if Dysert goes in with the mindset to be that backup, or rather not to be greedy in being a starter, he has enough tools to secure the position. I think Stanton as a backup is solid enough, but his salary is too solid and rather heavy if Zac gives the Cardinals an option out
