INDIANAPOLIS − Zakai Zeigler set an SEC record with his first assist in Tennessee basketball's game against Kentucky in the Sweet 16.
The Vols guard tallied his 261st assist of the season to set an SEC record for the most assists in a season. He broke the record set by Ole Miss guard Sean Tuohy in 1979-80.
He recorded the record-setting assist on a lob to Felix Okpara that put Tennessee ahead 23-15 with 9:21 to play before halftime in the NCAA Tournament game in Indianapolis.
Zeigler set the UT record single-season assists when he recorded his 228th assist of the season with his fourth assist against Texas in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals on March 14 to break Rodney Woods' record of 227. Woods' record stood since the 1974-75 season.
The senior established a Tennessee career record for assist with his 716th, which came on his second assist against Wofford on March 20 in the NCAA Tournament in Lexington, Kentucky. He broke Johnny Darden's record of 715, which stood since Darden's career from 1975-79. Darden and Zeigler are the only two Vols to have more than 600 assists.
Zeigler ranks third in SEC history behind Tuohy and Arkansas guard Kareem Reid. Tuohy had 830 from 1979-82 and Reid had 248 from 1996-99.

The 5-foot-9 guard had 218 assists as a junior after having 161 as a a sophomore. He had 93 as a freshman.
He has three of the 18 seasons in Tennessee history in which a player recorded at least 150 assists.
