Arizona Sports Report saying Grace will retire after Sunday

They have nothing on the Phillies when it comes to attempts to manipulate the fan base. Phillies deliberately plant stories and articles in attempts to sway fan opinions pro or con on certain players. D-Backs are novices. When the Phillies traded Curt Schilling and Scott Rolen, they went to...

Arizona Sports Report saying Grace will retire after Sunday

Well, while you may not appreciate Grace, you are quite wrong if you think most of the fans don't. He has a charm that appeals in different ways to both men and women. I agree that the media and teams generally do underestimate their fan base. But from what I heard the fans loved the...

Arizona Sports Report saying Grace will retire after Sunday

D-Backs just playing to their fan base. Mark Grace is hugely popular with the fans. He has the charm. Matt Williams never was. What's wrong with making the fans happy. It isn't always about truly objective measurements. Fan support is totally subjective. If the fans like Gracie, then make...

Arizona Sports Report saying Grace will retire after Sunday

If Grace wants to manage in the future, he would be better served to manage in the minors. I think that's a better road than hitting coach. Whether he could be a good manager or not, who knows? It's different from player, requires a different skill set. He seems to have what I consider some...

Chicks Dig the long ball !!!!!!

Chicks don't dig the long ball. But it is cool to see Randy hit a home run.

    Why did Tony stop running?

Re: Re: Re: Why did Tony stop running? Yes. But so what? I think Larry Bowa is accountable for the phillies underachieving, but they appear to be winning in spite of him. Talent will win out, regardless of the stupidity of the manager.

Could Curt and Gonzo be gone after this year?

Well let me see, one of the few teams that can afford to take on payroll is moving into a new stadium and still has money to spend. Coincidentally that team is the one team that Curt says he is willing to be traded to AND he just happens to own a house there. What do you think? That you don't...

Could Curt and Gonzo be gone after this year?

The 2002 payroll did not include deferments, it was salary for that year I believe, though I'm not positive. The $94 million figure for this year does include deferments. The actual opening day payroll was $80 mil and they did not take on salary, or very little as the Yankees & Jays picked up...

    Next years team

Biggest problem is that the Phillies greatest area of strength is minor league pitching. We have no real good position players, and particularly no good outfielders in our system. Our only good position player who is expendable is Chase Utley, who is a 2B, something you don't need. 3-way...

Season thread. The Diamondbacks start their run to the playoffs tonight

Just a small shot - but only because you brought up the MLB board in the first place.

Perhaps if you didn't take such an attitude with people, you might get a more favorable response. But you seem to want to make a fight out of everything. You do have good things to say, so here's to a fresh start on this board. :)

    Thom and Joe Sr.

Well, after I wrote that I was thinking Curt isn't the best example, because the home run is his weakness. I generally agree with what you said, but in some situations when the pitcher is obviously on his game, if you can scratch out a run you try for it. But even as to Curt, his home runs...

    Thom and Joe Sr.

Well, I don't think you can just apply broad statistics to any particular game situation. I'd be more than happy to get the home run whenever it comes. But if I'm facing Curt Schilling or Randy Johnson in the playoffs and I have Matt Morris on the mound, if I got a runner on first base I would...

    Underacheiving Offense?

BC, managers aren't usually the brightest bulbs in the world. In general they are conservative and slow to adapt to change. If something has worked for them in the past, they reluctantly cling to the belief that what's happening now is an aberration and that if they just "stay the course" it...

    Underacheiving Offense?

You imply that Sanders and Durazo left because Brenly gave them no respect. Sanders wanted to come back, but the D-Backs decided to go with Danny Bautista instead. Durazo had no choice. He was first year arbitration eligible this year, so he belonged to the D-Backs for the next three years...

Fan or no fan this team is toast

Re: Re: Re: Fan or no fan this team is toast Well, first let me say that I asked you how you would address the problem and you responded that Gonzo needs to bear the burden of winning. Well since he's the best offensive player, what does he need to do that he isn't doing? But more to...

    Callups

A few contradictions here. Joe Jr. I am sure is the one making the calls on who goes on the 40 man roster. BB has little to do with that. Why are you blaming Brenly for braindead call-ups? You also contradict yourself. If you thought the team was only a .500 team at the beginning of the...

Fan or no fan this team is toast

Perhaps you have overlooked these numbers? .303/.394/.530/.925 DWKB would probably show you Gonzo's win shares which I imagine are equally high. He is the best offensive player on the team, so how do you want to address the problem - trade him for a lesser offensive player?

Season thread. The Diamondbacks start their run to the playoffs tonight

I agree. I have no clue why Brenly keeps pitching Oropesa. He doesn't have it right now. He goes through periods of good pitching, but then he goes bad, very bad and you can't pitch him.

    Giles A Padre

Giles has a full no trade clause. Interestingly there were about 6 teams on his list including the D-Backs. He's a San Diego guy and wanted to go home. Arizona would have been close enough. But.........D-Backs are cutting salary, in case nobody noticed. Wasn't going to happen, no way, no...

Are the Diamondbacks underachieving or not?

I don't know that I'd bring in a lefty reliever to face a lefty when I was three runs down. At three runs down I'd be more concerned with long term bullpen usage issues. Too many lefty righty moves kill a bullpen over the long haul. I'm not a fan of overmanaging that way. We can second guess...

Do you still think Mondesi was a good trade?

Sanders wasn't traded for anyway. Must be a Card fan, because a D-Backs fan would know he was a free agent signing. :p Actually if one is talking trade deadline deals - you really can't forget Curt Schilling. Of course he didn't help in 2000 - but 2001 a different story.

That's not what I meant. I meant look what happened to Travis Lee who was rushed through the minors with nary a chance to breathe before he ended up in Phoenix.
