On Sherman, rewatch this past years Fiesta Bowl. He was the one of UConns bright spot, and showed nice hands and good lead blocking.

Does anyone remember the episode on Hard Knocks this year when Rex Ryan said that Mike Tannenbaum the Jets' GM gives him one pick all his own---a 5th rounder---to make?

If you recall, last year Ryan was ecstatic about taking FB John Connor of Kentucky---a player that "jumped out on him" on tape when he was watching other propects. Rex called him "The Terminator."

Well, what we then saw is Connor knocking players on their butts in practices and in games---and kicking total butt on STs.

It wouldn't be a total surprise therefore if the selection of FB Anthony Sherman was at John Lott's urging. Sherman showed up very strong at the combine and with Lott urging him on, Sherman mustered 32 reps at 225. That's tremendous strength for a kid his size...and he runs in the 4.6-4.7 range.

Sherman deserves a lot of credit for leading his Huskies and RB Jordan Todman to the Fiesta Bowl. You get to big games with tough players and great leaders (2 year captain) like Sherman.

Mitch - This pick is right up your alley as an X's & O's guru.

I think we should view the Sherman pick within the context of our selection of a pass-catching TE in Housler.

Perhaps Wiz is giving up on overemphasizing blocking TE's in favor of going more back to a 2-back offensive set with a "move TE" and a lead-blocking FB (who also, by the way, has pretty good hands).

That is a GREAT point, Jeff. I think you are right on the money.

ProFootball Weekly rates him as the #1 FB and said he should go in rounds 4 or 5
Mel Kiper in his detail draft report also rates him as the #1 FB and this is his analysis: For what you ask a fullback to do, he certainly impresses, also, getting top of the line grades as a very consistent and effective lead blocker. Another huge plus with Sherman is his ability to get the job done at a high level on special teams. More than just a conventional fullback, he provides the multi-dimensionl talent you look for. He works hard, provides a ton of versatility, and has been able to apply his outstanding measureless on the gridiron. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he heard his name called as early as the fourth round. Sherman has the ability and work ethic to enjoy a solid career in the NFL, proving to be a vital contributor to an offenses success. Combine Note; Ran a 4.74, did 32 reps, and had a 32 1/2 vertical jump.

He's a UConn kid and I'm a homer, so I say this was the Cardinals best pick of the entire draft.

Anthony Sherman is a player I know a lot about. I saw him play all through high school---North Attleboro H.S. (MA). This kid is the ultimate gamer---he puts everything he has into winning football games. He does all the little stuff that doesn't show up on stat sheets, except for the number of special teams tackles he makes, which he is crazy good at.

He has good feet---and he thumps people.

It's a little soon to take a FB---but, imo, he's well worth it.

Anthony Sherman is Cardinal Tough.:newcards:

 Cool. At least we got one!

Where'd you get that, Urban?

Nope, just being a smart ass that would rather moan and cry over every pick because everyone knows a franchise's success teeters on your 5th round draft pick.

Everyone has this guy rated as the #1 fullback in the draft. He has good speed for a FB, exceptional strength, soft hands, along with all the other intangibles you want to see in a player. If Whiz isn't actually serious about running the ball this upcoming season, he sure is making it seem like he is.

Excellent. I still want to call him moxie tho.

Good player, hope we use him.

I love this pick.

Not only is he a great lead blocker, but he is just as good in pass protection as well. People say he can catch so I will take their word on it, just never saw him do it much. But the one area he might make the most impact is special teams. Great special teams lead blocker and had over 65 special teams tackles while at UConn. That is crazy good production as a special teams tackler, top special teamer in the draft IMO.

Wiz wanted guys who would make an impact right away. Well after Peterson this kid might see the field more so then any other rookie by a large margin -

1. Kickoff Coverage team
2. Kickoff Return team
3. Punt Coverage Team
4. Punt Return Team
5. Lead Blocker
6. Receiver out of the backfield
7. Pass Blocker

The "Sherman Tank" will see a TON of snaps.

per the after draft interviews with Whis / Graves

Sherman was rated the no. 1 special teams player on their board

since FB is only a 15 snaps a game guy on offense, they needed to find a guy who could contribute on specials as well. Feel like they got that guy.

If it is anything like when we had Terrelle Smith in the Super Bowl year, Our FB will play in about 40% of the O snaps, which will be between 23 and 28 snaps a game.

I'm still dancing, we gotta few No 1's on a few people's boards.
Peterson
Williams
Sherman

I like the other guys too and I still consider this draft a big success. Can't wait to see who Whiz has coming in for QB. If it's someone good....

Yup, Peterson and Sherman cam make big impacts on our special teams alone. I heard something before the draft about Peterson wanting to concentrate on defense but we need him bringing it back to the house on returns too.
Sherman just wants to hit someone. I love that about him already. :)
