Gonzo's hit is most famous but I always thought Womack's double was the one that shook up Rivera and the Yankees.

...Gonzo's hit was a bloop and I remain convinced to this day that had Torre played the infield at normal depth, Jeter gets to that ball....
Oh boy... I moved to AZ from the NY area in August of 2001. As some here know, I was a lifelong and diehard Yankee fan!
This game, aside from being one of the greatest baseball games I have ever seen, was a killer!
I would agree that it was Womack's hit, which IIRC came on a classic Mariano cut fastball that came barreling into Womack and I still don't know how he was able to turn on it and get such solid wood on that ball, that set things in motion... Though Grace did lead off the inning with a hit as well.

Amazing that here I sit today, now with the Core 4 gone, I really have little interest in the Yankees and I've become a passionate Dbacks fan! Go figure...![]()
Yes, Jeter probably catches or comes close to catching that ball if he was at normal depth... however, there is no way in the world any manager would leave their infield at normal depth with 1 out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th of a tie game!!!
