Gonzo's hit is most famous but I always thought Womack's double was the one that shook up Rivera and the Yankees.

Yes it was.

Yankee Fans can dismiss Gonzo's as a bloop, but Womack's hit was a solid no doubt about it.

Happy Anniversary, D-backs and D-backs fans.

I still feel the key to the Championship was pitching RJ only at home (in Games 2 and 6, then closing Game 7).

Rivera was shaken up before that. Remember that terrible throw he made to Jeter when Delucci was advancing on the bunt. Also Brosius could've got a double play had he thrown to 1st after the force out at 3rd. Surprisingly the pressure got to them not us.

I thought the Bautista-Counsel relay to nail O'Neill trying to take third on a hit to the wall in the first set a tone early that we were in it to win it. Classic game.

Celebrating that night with my family was an experience I will never forget. It really was special.

Here's to many more championships for all the AZ sports teams, but mostly the Cards :p

What an awesome day that was! I remember just jumping up on my parents couch and going nuts after that hit!

Oh boy... I moved to AZ from the NY area in August of 2001. As some here know, I was a lifelong and diehard Yankee fan!
This game, aside from being one of the greatest baseball games I have ever seen, was a killer!
I would agree that it was Womack's hit, which IIRC came on a classic Mariano cut fastball that came barreling into Womack and I still don't know how he was able to turn on it and get such solid wood on that ball, that set things in motion... Though Grace did lead off the inning with a hit as well.
Gonzo's hit was a bloop and I remain convinced to this day that had Torre played the infield at normal depth, Jeter gets to that ball...

Amazing that here I sit today, now with the Core 4 gone, I really have little interest in the Yankees and I've become a passionate Dbacks fan! Go figure...:D

I don't think there is any doubt about that. McCarver did a great Nostradamus impersonation on that one.

I went to all 4 home games of that series, even though I lived in LA at the time. Best money I ever spent. The stories from that entire series are legend with my family and friends. Every game had a different angle to it for me personally, moments burned into my brain forever.

Easily the best World Series of all time. I don't care what anyone says. Major superstars... Curt and RJ on our side, and pretty much EVERYONE on the Yankees. And when it all came down to game 7, it was arguably the most dominant pitchers of it's era going Mano a Mano... Clemens, Rivera, RJ and Curt... all in the same game. Throw in all the 9/11 stuff hovering around the series, giving it an almost mystical feel and it was legendary stuff.

I agree that Jeter would have caught it had he been playing normal depth, or if he could actually move. :D

Yes, Jeter probably catches or comes close to catching that ball if he was at normal depth... however, there is no way in the world any manager would leave their infield at normal depth with 1 out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th of a tie game!!!

Corners in. SS and 2b at "double-play" depth. Not all that rare at all actually.

Well, Jay Bell was at 3rd, and the catcher could balance his checkbook waiting for him to come home. :D
