1975 was a good team, I remember watching them. I still think that the 2008 and 2009 teams were better.

I beg to differ. Let's compare:

QB: Hart/Warner-edge Warner
RB: Metcalf/James-edge Metcalf
FB: Otis/Smith-edge Otis
WRs: edge 2008
TE: Smith/Patrick-edge to the hall of famer
O-Line: don't even play. The '75 o-line gave up 6 sacks all year.

Defense: slight edge to the '75 team and I do mean slight

The reason the '75 team was better was, for starters, they won 11 games against much tougher competition. Remember, there were only 26 teams back then. And the division was much, much tougher than the west has been over the last 2 seasons. Oh, and I played it out. '75 wins a squeaker 28-23.:D

I remember the 74, 75, 76, 77 teams under Coryell having crappy defenses. Jim Hart and Mel Gray bailed them out many times. Metcalf was good, he could run for a touchdown every time he touched the ball...the problem was when you looked back he had left the ball back at the line of scrimmage.

Yeah, he was a fumbler. But wouldn't it be great to have that team's offensive line?

Thanks for that post, that was the team that made me a Cards fan. Metcalf is still my favorite NFL player of all time, makes me feel old to know his son has already retired(and played for us too for awhile).

Loved Mel Gray, Hart, the OL etc. Sad to see JV Cain, died tragically in a practice, such a talented kid too would have been another great player.

Funniest part is Dierdorf being described as one of the biggest OL's in the game at 280, that's small today, amazing what steroids can do.

After Dobler got into the fight with A J Duhe, Bidwill traded him and Ike Harris to the Saints. Cards drafted Steve Little #1 next year after firing Coryell...all downhill after that.

Tom Banks made a commercial making fun of Bidwill in St. Louis and they got rid of him too

And they lost Metcalf to Canada because Bidwill wouldn't pay him what he was worth.

Stephens-Howling is the closest thing to Terry we've had since, but he doesn't return punts and is not nearly as good a RB as Terry was. We still need a Mel Gray WR, Breaston is good but Gray was unreal, seemed like he scored from 50+ every time we played Dallas.

People also have to realize how slow Jim Hart was, 8 sacks in 14 games with him at QB was remarkable.

Cards wouln't pay Metcalf and he went to the CFL. J V Cain died of a heart problem on the practice field before the 1978 season.

Actually, it was before the '79 season. I remember the team wearing black arm bands for the entire season. As for that O-Line, they were just sick. Banks, Dobler, and Dierdorf all went to the pro-bowl in '75 and on the left side, Bob Young and Roger Finney weren't slouches either and Smith was a good blocker as well. Metcalf and Otis was our version of Criag/Rathman.

It's been THIRTY-FIVE YEARS and this organization has STILL not learned how to be this good again!:bang:

I'm sure that like me, many of you are not football geniuses and yet most of you figured it out with just the viewing of this one old video.

I just want to grab any Cardinal decision maker and scream repeatedly in their face: IT'S THE OFFENSIVE LINE YOU MOTHER F@#$ERS!!!:hammer:

Even the old voice of the video got it right when he stated that, "the [Cards] line ESCORTED a ground attack..." Escorted: A group of persons...accompanying another...for protection or guidance on a journey. An armed guard. As a body of soldiers. Does that definition sound like any Cardinals o-line that has followed that early 70's line?

Only six sacks allowed! Imagine if K. Warner was only sacked six times a season. I bet they would have won that SB and Warner would still be playing.

The only way to overcome a miserable o-line in the NFL is to have a Hall o Fame QB...and since that RARELY happens, a la Warner, I have to scream this one more:deadhorse: time: PLEASE CARDINALS, FIX THE OFFENSIVE LINE!!!!!!:pullhair:

Great posts! So many good memories. Nice being in a forum where the others remember those teams of the 70's. My first trip to Busch Stadium was so amazing! Thanks for sharing.

First thing to do is fire Grimm.
Anderson kinda reminds me of Jim Hart, streaky, don't think Anderson playing with that 75 line, there would be vast improvement in his QB rating. Think of Beanie, Hightower , the Hyphen with that line and think of what are WR's could do! But I quess or defense would still suck.

Think about this. As beat up as the Colts are they have only allowed 13 sacks this season. Our oline has given up 36!!!

I don't know which was the more ******** move this off season, thinking DA and Miniature Max could be the QBs for the Cardinals, or shaking up the offensive line.

I was just starting to think that Levi Brown would turn out to be an ok first round pick and then they moved him to Left Tackle. To see a team make the same mistake twice made me want to :barf:

I guess Levi will eventually be moving on to Dallas for an $80 million contract to play Right Tackle. :bang:

I had actually forgotten how good Norm Thompson was.

I still don't know why Bakken and Dobbler are not in the Hall of Fame.

Duckjake, this kind of tells me that the coach is not on the same page as the front office. I say this because if you look at the structure of the offensive line, Graves set the line up as a line for a left handed qb not a right handed one. I think Graves recognized that Levi was not the best pass blocking tackle and thought that Leinart could best be served by having him in his field of vision. So when the qb change was made it screwed with the Grave's basic structure of the offensive line.
