Redskins Complete Trade, Add 1st Rounder
By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
April 19, 2005

The Redskins have completed a trade with the Denver Broncos that brings them the 25th overall pick in this weekend's NFL draft. The trade gives the team two picks in the first round (No. 9 and No. 25) on Saturday.

In return for Denver's 25th pick, the Redskins have given the Broncos' this year's third-round pick (76th overall) and the Redskins first- and fourth-round selections in the 2006 draft.

The Redskins' list of selections for the April 23-24 draft now consists of the 9th and 25th pick in the first round; a fourth-round pick (112 overall); a sixth-round pick (183 overall); and a seventh round pick (222 overall).

The trade gives the Redskins plenty of flexibility heading into the draft.

With two first-round picks, the Redskins could potentially add two starters. In the last few weeks, the team has eyed several prospects at cornerback and wide receiver, two positions that head coach Joe Gibbs has said are needs for the team.

The team could also trade both picks and move up into the upper echelon of the first round. With a top five pick, the Redskins could select one of the elite players at cornerback and wide receiver.

Braylon Edwards of Michigan and Mike Williams of USC are widely regarded as the top wide receivers in the draft. Both could be off the draft board when the Redskins select at No. 9.

At cornerback, Adam "Pac-Man" Jones of West Virginia and Antrel Rolle of Miami are among the elite cornerbacks.

I told you guys on the other thread that it would've taken three picks to move up to that spot. I think Washington did as well as it could to get that third pick moved into next year's draft instead of this year's. Really, when you look at Denver dropping all the way into the 3rd round, it's not that lopsided.

Wow

Wow, Denver violated the skins in that trade. Unreal. If I was the Redskins I don't think I'd have given up next years #1 straight up. Next year may be a stronger draft and the pick will probably be higher than 25. Even with something for Denver's effort 2 extra middle round picks is extreme.

If Washington needs a corner, doesn't their pick at 25 now pose a threat to the Cards getting their top 2nd Round corner if the Cards draft an RB in the first?

And everyone wonders how Denver always remains competitive. This is an outstanding trade on their part.

Either way the REdskins were going to pick a CB at #9 or at #25. So it wont take away any extra CB's from us in the 2nd round, no matter what. With the #25 they are targeting either Frye or a WR IMO.

In fact if the Redskins get their WR with the #9 pick it will push a few good corners down the list even more making our trade down options even better if taht is the route we want to go.

That is why it will be Rolle, followed--hopefully--by Arrington, or Rolle and Henry deal.

FWIW, the 9 (1350) and 25 (+ 720 = 2070) is roughly equal to the Browns #3 (2200) or the Bears #4 (1800).

This will be the first time in franchise history that Denver will have had 2 1st round picks in the same draft, but this is an amazing trade for them and something I had hoped they would have done for years (except for last year's draft).

Deeper draft next year and I don't see the Skins as being better than they were in '04. Draft day might suck for me on Saturday, but damn I can't wait for next year's now.

This trade is probably the forerunner to Buchanon and Oakland's 2nd to DC now for the 25th.

So, do Washington now package #9 and #25 to move up for Braylon Edwards???

Or the surprise of the draft, do they try and trade up for QB's - Rogers or Smith

This weekend is going to be very interesting, I think there is going to be a lot of trades, surprise picks, and we have no idea what the Cards are going to do.

So much fun is to be had this weekend.

Seems like a potential steal for Denver but so much for Jake predicting Denver was going to bring in more offensive weapons this year to help him out, at least not a first rounder.

But next year they can really clean up if Washington's pick is pretty high.

Ehhh. . except for Rod, the skill position talent on Denver's team was so young and they still ended up with a Top 5 O. Hopefully those first year starters can take a step up and become even more effective this year.

I'll take no offensive help this year for the Skins' 1st next year.

Seems like a poor trade for Washington, I dont get it. Gain a #25 1st round this year for a 3rd round this year, a 1st next year (we'll assume higher than 25), and 6th next year? In compensation for 2 entire picks is the pickup of a year of time. Doesnt seem worth it to me.

Yeah wasn't ripping the move just saying Jake is less likely to get the help he was apparently predicting. But if you assume Watts and Bell step it up he has more talent than he needs anyways.

But next year could be a goldmine Washington is one of those teams that could go either way they have talent but they need a lot of things to go right or you can see that team just totally imploding. They don't have a leader to pull the team together so if they struggle you can see a real
tank job there the last half of the season.

I wasn't going after you, I've just wanted Denver to do something like this for years. They've been stuck as an above average team for awhile. This a risk they need to take to put themselves in a position for that elite player, whether it's Leinhart or D'Brickshaw next year.

Depending on which (if any) of their draft picks step up, I don't see the Skins as a better team compared to last year. Pierce and Smoot are gone, Moss is a downgrade on O, and Arrington continues to have knee problems. Jansen is back, and everyone has a year with Gibbs now too though. I haven't looked at their schedule, but I think the other 3 NFCE teams are all better and they play the AFCW this year too. I don't see that 1st round pick being any lower than 16th.

Is Bobby Beatherd (spelling?) back as the GM of the Redskins? Seems like something he would do: trading the future for the present. Well if the Redskins can get two starters on round one pehaps it will be worthwhile. But I would hate to have to give up 3 picks for Denver's first rounder which is the 25th pcik.
