Astros acquire Jennings from Rockies for Taveras and others

The Astros pick up Jason Jennings and right-hander Miguel Asencio from the Colorado Rockies

The Colorado Rockies will receive center fielder Willy Taveras and right-handers Jason Hirsh and Taylor Buchholz.

Jennings, 28, will replace left-hander Andy Pettitte in the Astros' rotation. Pettitte, 34, signed a two-year, $32 million free-agent contract with the Yankees last Friday.

The Astros, who still could re-sign free-agent right-hander Roger Clemens, paid a steep price for Jennings, a pitcher with a 4.74 career ERA and only one season of more than 12 wins.

The quality of the players going to the Rockies will increase the pressure on the Astros to sign Jennings — a free agent at the end of next season — to a long-term contract.

Taveras, 25, will fill the Rockies' void in center field. Buchholz, 25, and Hirsh, 24, are considered two of the Astros' top pitching prospects.

Chris Burke, 26, likely will take over for the Astros in center, and the trade could accelerate the rise of the Astros' top position prospect, Class AA outfielder Hunter Pence, to the majors.

The package is similar to the one that the Astros discussed last week with the White Sox in a proposed trade for right-hander Jon Garland.

Buchholz made his major-league debut last season and was 6-10 with a 5.89 ERA in 113 innings. Hirsh, who is 6-foot-8, was 13-2 with a 2.10 ERA in 137 1/3 innings at Class AAA.

Asencio, 26, could develop into a decent middle-inning reliever. He has made only 11 appearances the past four seasons due to multiple surgeries on his right elbow. www.espn.com

They gave up their top two pitching prospects and a speedy, up and coming CF, they better get Jennings to sign an extension but even if that happens they look ridiculous making this trade.

Do they look any worse than what the Mariners gave Batista? I liked Miguel, but 26 - 28 million for 3 years?
And the Royals giving Meche 55 million for 5? The owners are going nuts, and unforunately it will cost the fans in the long run.

18 million a year for Wells. Needless to say, our nightmares of V-Wells going to the Dodgers might be quelled now.

In their never-ending quest for more young pitching, the White Sox shook up their staff Saturday by trading 23-year-old Brandon McCarthy to Texas for prized pitching prospects John Danks and Nick Masset.

In addition, the Sox sent minor league outfielder David Paisano to Texas for minor league pitcher Jacob Rasner.

Danks, a 21-year-old left-hander, was ranked as the Rangers' top pitching prospect by Baseball America. Masset, 24, was ranked eighth. The trade comes after the Sox heavily scouted the Rangers' farm system last summer in an attempt to fortify their pitching depth.

WTF???? From what everyone on this board said McCarthy was untouchable, I knew they were going to trade another starter but alot of people disagreed. I thought they would have traded Buerhle before McCarthy. To think if we would have offered Nippert and Owings would we have been able to get him, or imagine Carlos Gonzalez and Nippert for him.

Pisses me off too because I KNOW Arizona could have trumped any offer other teams could have made for him, and I also know they could have done much better than Danks (who is a good young prospect no doubt) and Nick Massett.

Danks and Massett is a better offer than Nippert and Owings.

Danks is a .500 pitcher in the minors, he may have potential but Nippert's and Owings numbers are way better. Wasn't it those two that most teams were inquiring about in trades, especially TEX?

And Mike Bacsik's numbers are better than all three, doesn't mean he's a better prospect. ;)

I don't recall any other teams asking about Nippert or Owings other than Texas. I really don't think packaging them both up would have been good enough to get McCarthy.

Texas and Anaheim are the only teams we were linked to in trade rumors. Anaheim wanted Tracy, TEX wanted them in a package for Texiera.

If Danks was so good of a prospect why did they get rid of him? McCarthy hasn't proven he's any better than Danks. With the exception of big league experience and one being a lefty, there isn't a big difference between Danks and McCarthy
