As usual if you see a mistake or think there seems to be something out of place let me know. This is a tool for us all and I would like it to be as perfect as possible.

For anyone who wants to look at Base salaries for themselves for any player and how much their base salary is during the life of their deal just go to: http://nflpa.org/Members/main.asp?subPage=Active+Player+Search

Rookie cap is $4,100,100. But taken down to 3.5 Mill since the lower round guys to begin with will not be in the top 53 salaries.

Cool!

Thanks, Joe!

BTW, you have Ross, Pace and Johnson listed with one year left on their deal. Ross just signed a 5 year deal and Pace and Johnson are entering their 4th year on their 5 year rookie deals.

I think Langston Moore and Bridges will be given the middle tenders? It will cost about 2x 200k more, but it will keep two quality back-ups at the biggest need positions on the team.

I deleted another player and then moved them all up but didnt move the years along with it, so from Ross on down the years left are wrong. I deleted it for now until I can fix it. Thanks for the heads up.

As for Moore and Bridges I still dont think they will pay them the 1.4 mill. it will take for the middle tender. Thats more then double the low tender of 656K. And maybe to high for players of their caliber. I dont know you maybe right.

I will add much more projections and how much cap space we have later on, once the real cap max figure comes out.

But as of right now I got as close as I have ever got to reported 2006 amounts in various articles. But those acticles came out before a few of the contracts were added such as the Davey contract and a few other smaller ones.

UFA's that we will have in 2006. There are only a few of our own UFA's that will cost anything like Warner or McCown, and maybe Davis and Femi getting marginal deals and Redmond getting close to vet minimum 2-3 year deal. As for the rest, any one of them should get nothing more then 1 year vet minimums.

UFA's:

Raymond Walls CB
Robert Tate CB
Quentin Harris S
Damien Anderson RB
James Jackson RB
Harold Morrow FB
Obafemi Ayanbadejo FB
Kurt Warner QB
Josh McCown QB
Adam Haayer T
Bill Conaty C
Reggie Swinton KR
Ian Allen OL
Isaac Keys LB
J.R. Redmond RB
Ross Kolodziej DT
Russell Davis DT
R-Kal Truluck DE
Anton Palepoi DE
Dyshod Carter CB

Now for the RFA's. They will cost anywhere from the low of 656k(comp = round they were drafted), 1.4 mill for the mid tender(comp = 1st rounder) to the high tender of 1.8 mill (comp = 1st and 3rd rounder). Either way each of them are ours unless another team wants to give us compensation of where they were tendered or drafted (*note if we didnt draft them we dont get compensation just the right to match the offer if given the low tender). So basically they are ours if we tender them, at a cheap rate, but we will have to extend their offers during the season before they hit UFA status the next year. My opinion - Each will get tendered the low tender, except for maybe Bridges. Not to many teams will want to give up a 3rd for Hayes so we are safe their, a team might be OK with giving up a 6th for a starter in Wells but I will take that chance and hope for a small offer so we can match if not take our 6th rounder and run. Moore may get an offerbut he to wont get a big offer so I will take taht chance as well. And King has never played so dont expect anyone to give up a 5th rounder for him.

RFA's (3 years experiance)

Reggie Wells G (6th round comp if given low tender)
Jeremy Bridges OL (not drafted by us, no comp if given low tender, only right to match)
Gerald Hayes LB (3rd round comp if given a low tender)
Langston Moore DT (not drafted by us, no comp if given low tender, only right to match)
Kenny King DT (5th round comp if given a low tender)

Now the real cheap guys at 230 K, the EFA's. But dont be fooled by them being cheap a lot of them could play vital roles for us.

EFA's (2 or less years experiance) - Teams cant even talk to these guys if tendered. But they can be trade bait. Fransisco, Bulman, Smith are virtual locks to get tendered. As for the rest I say tender them all if they have a good attitude. Why you ask, well they are cheap basic no cap implications, they already know how the practices are run, know the players and coaches, ect. for camp fodder that makes for much better run smoother practices and offseason workouts, less learning curve, makes better competition for the important starters who will be on the 3 man roster, plus most can still be put on the PS and their may be a diamond in the rough.

Aaron Francisco CB
Ben Hall TE
Andy Stokes TE
Dan Sheldon WR
Zamir Cobb WR
Nick Novak K
Shawn Lynch C
Rolando Cantu G
Alan Reuber T
Dante Ellington T
Tim Bulman DT
Antonio Smith DE
Tyler King DE

Joe, I have been searching the net and it looks like we are going to get around 95+ mil next year when the new TV contracts start. We still have a few dead wood players left and we should free up another 1-2 million there. That would leave us with around 32 million for players. Take out the 5 mil on the rookies and 5 for our RFA and EFA and we should have about 22 million to go hard after players that we need.

I have made an update Feb. 8th, 2006

1. Added Rookie cap should be a little over 4 Mill.

2. Added Price for practice squad is about $612,000.

3. Added - I included 4 out of our 5 RFA's salaries in order to get the roster total to the 53 man roster, I made their salary the minimum becuase Idoubt they will get anything higher and I did only 4 of the 5 becuase one may not be tendered an offer.

Reasoning -
I did all of that to give us a real world cap figure on how much we really have to spend in FA come March 3rd. All other cap amounts given by the media dont take into acount rookie pools, RFAs yet to be tendered, practice squad, full 53 man roster(they use the rule of 51, which is very misleading to fans). So when comparing the cap figure I have laid out compared to what the media tells us about the cap figures of our team and other teams, remember to put it into perspective. Meaning, my Cap figure includes a 53 man roster, rookie pool, practice squad, ect. A much more real Number. Their cap numbers only include players under contract, no rookie pool, the rule of 51 , no practice squad, which makes fans think they have more money then they actually do have, which is very misleading.

I also included the amount of cap space for FA based on the rumor cap for 2006 which is anywherefrom 92-95 mill as of right now. Until the real number is released I will give you the range of cap space available.

Add Warner at 5 million UFA

Add another 5 million for our UFA / EFA.

UFA
Raymond Walls CB
Robert Tate CB
Quentin Harris S
Obafemi Ayanbadejo FB
Adam Haayer T
J.R. Redmond RB
Russell Davis DT

EFA
Aaron Francisco CB
Tim Bulman DT
Antonio Smith DE

Total 10 million.

Players who will or might be let go.

1. Marcell Shipp (savings of $987,500).
2. Robert Griffith (savings of $925,000)
3. James Hodgins ( savings $750,000)
4. Fred Wakefield (savings 550,000)
5. You didn’t take into account that if we draft 7 players that will take 7 players from the bottom of the team list. (Bottom 7) ( savings $1,645,000)

Total Savings : $4,857,500.00

Projected Cap – 13 –16 million for Other Free Agents. Now take into account this will all changes at a fast pace due to when we sign our own players and other teams players that would put is at around 10 – 15 players over the 53 man roster so the figures change.

I think Antonio Smith will be offered a larger deal based on how he played last year. Thanks Joe this is great stuff just like in the past year.

Davis' deal is just begging to be reworked. We can sign a good starter with his cap space alone. Don't have to extend either. We could say, "Okay, we're going to pay you six million of your salary as bonus this season." Doing that at this point would clear three mil in cap space. Three mil can get you a very decent player.

The bottom line is that we aren't "so flush" to go willy nilly into FA......no more than two premier FA ( of the caliber of say, Bentley and Edgerrin) likely.

We are still looking good in the Cap Money. Now if the Cards can rework Bigs contract to get it lower lets say around the 5 mill limit and get rid of some of the deadwood and unproductive palyers we could save more money.

Big get his contract extended and get the cap hit down to the 5 mil mark.

Savings 4.997 mil

Let go.

Hodgins - OK FB but we have paid him for the last 2 yrs and he has been hurt. Time to say goodbye.

Savings: 750K

Shipp - Love the guy but it is also time to say goodbye.

Savings: 987K

Wakefield: The test at OL didnt really work here and he is taking up too much money for his production on the field.

Savings: 550K

Griffith: He was ok at FS but he might retire and we need his salary to get another younger FS.

Savings: 925K

Total Savings $8.209 Mil

With just this savings that could get you a Starting OG, FS and DT.

That 13.7 million really isnt all that impressive. Now that Warner is signed and you take out the rookie cap. Hopefully we can clear some more room with L Davis. We really need to make a huge splash in FA this year.

It is all relative though, compare it to other teams cap space after they take out their rookie cap, PS, 53 man roster, like I did for our real world 13.7 number. When you do that we are still at or close to the top of list of real world cap space tp spend.

Are Femi's and Davis new deals going to put us under 10 mil in cap space?

Agreed but that just doesnt seem like a bunch of money to bring in a really good FA crop. Such as an Edge and a Bentley along with a few mid tiers. Seems like we would have to get really tricky.

When it comes to the real world cap..Signing Big names has a lot to do with the teams ability to pay large chuncks upfront.I think that is truly the differtence maker. That's why teams like the Redskins can sign guys fast when the FA period starts. It's large dollars up front! In Cap money we can compete with anyone, what we never have done is through money at players, just to win them over. IMO this is good and doesn't mess up your cap like the Redskins.

Redskins are the extreme on the complete opposite side of the spectrum. We are on the complete other side of that spectrum. Our way doesnt mess up our cap but it isnt good either. There is a happy medium ground that we havent found YET.

Can anyone explain what today's breakdown in negotiations for a new collective bargaining arrangement may have on the Cards?

(There is talk on the NFL network of teams that will be letting go a host of players)

It means there will be a 95 million cap instead of a 110 million cap. Because the Cards are already in a good position with their money it is a good thing because many teams won't have the money to compete against the Cards in free agency. Many of the players being let go are because of their team being over the cap. All teams must be under the cap by March 3rd.

Joe here is some new info for you on the CAP figures before the New CBA is signed.

NFL | Cap set at $94.5 million
Wed, 1 Mar 2006 19:06:59 -0800

The Associated Press reports the NFL has set the salary cap for the 2006 season at $94.5 million. League owners will meet in New York on Thursday, March 2, in an attempt to work out a new collective bargaining agreement. A new CBA could add anywhere from $10 million to $15 million to the salary cap. Teams also have an additional six hours to terminate contracts and request waivers on players. The original deadline was set for 4 p.m. EST on Thursday, March 2, but has now been pushed back to 10 p.m.

Hey Joe,

I'm not sure if i'm just stupid, blind, or what, but I recall that you said you added or were going to add the years remaining on the contract of the players, but I can't see it on the spreadsheet. I figured it may be a tough thing to find on some of these guys, but I was trying to figure out possible cap casualties and wanted to figure out how much we save by cutting Shipp, Hodgins, BJ, and a few others, as well as restructuring Big. Any help or direction you can give me would be appreciated. BTW awesome job on the spread sheet, you really should give the team a call to inquire about a cap specialist position. :)
