As many of you know, every year I get excited about players that, IMO, have a chance to turn heads in camp and earn significant roles with the team. Here are the players that intrigue me a great deal:

1. RB Roger Robinson. Robinson was the leading rusher in NFL Europe last year. He's fast and surprisingly tough. Was placed on the IR after an injury riddled camp. This year he has a golden opportunity to make the team as the #3 RB, especially if he shows ability as a kickoff returner.

2. WR/PR/KR Michael Spurlock. May be a poor man's Randle-El. He's quick and very nifty in the open field. Played QB at Ole Miss...is a gifted athlete. Showed in brief appearances this past year that he's a sure-handed and elusive WR in the slot. Like Robinson, Spurlock's chances of making the team would increase significantly if he could win the punt returner job.

3. QB Shane Boyd. I really like this kid's package of talents...he's got excellent mobility, is a constant running threat from the pocket and has a very good arm. He lacks experience and needs grooming, but learning behind Leinart and Warner should help, as will running the scout team in practice if he wins the #3 QB job.

4. T Brandon Gorin. A forgotten player last year, despite costing the team a 6th round draft pick. He played well in the 2004 Super Bowl for the Pats...but hasn't asserted himself as a regular starter. Witht the right coaching and a vote of confidence, I think Gorin has an opportunity to be a factor in the team's plans this year.

5. TE/FB John Bronson. I am very curious about his prospects. Here is one of the most physically gifted athletes on the roster...a big, physical player with good wheels. A special teams ace in the making, for starters. Might be the answer at FB, especially now that the HC wants to employ a power running game. Whiz wants to play tough, physical football and Bronson has the goods to make a splash.

6. DE A.J. Schable. This kid has a non-stop motor and a nose for the football. An old-fashioned blue collar player who leaves it all out on the field. I think this kid is a winner.

7. DT Jonathan Lewis. I was very excited that the Cardinals drafted this kid. Lewis played big in big games at Virginia Tech. He's a little undersized, but has a knack for penetration and finishes his tackles very well. I think he can help the team as a rotation DT and nickle DT pass rusher.

8. LB Brandon Johnson. If this kid puts on some muscle this off-season and maintains his outstanding speed, he could help the team as a cover LB and might eventually challenge for good playing time at OLB.

9. CB Darrell Hunter. Talk about speed...Hunter is the fastest player on the roster. The rap on him was playing soft, but he showed some toughness and tenacity on special teams while showing outstanding chase-down speed.

10. G Elton Brown. The Big E...was ineffective and seemingly unmotivated last year. But, this kid has real talent...he's got a big frame and yet he is suprisingly agile and effective on the move. He's got a clean slate with the new staff and the opportunity to impress this time around.

I like both of these guys too and on this list, they have the best chance of contributing/starting.

It will be interesting to see how the oline is evaluted with the new coaching staff, especially Grimm.

Quality write up Mitch.

I'm really digging the Spurlock-Randle-El comparison. I think he's got that potential to be a jack of all trades.

Another name I'm going to throw on the list is LeRon McCoy. He showed flashes in his rookie season before getting hurt last year. I envision him being a good slot reciever, maybe the #3-#4 Wideout.

I love the ESPN-like hesitant prediction, "I think Gorin has an opportunity to be a factor in the team's plans this year." Classic. If he gets a roster spot he becomes a factor in the teams plans and we are saying that he only has an opportunity to do so. HA HA HA.

It is like the quasi prediction being used by ESPN, "I believe that if the Cardinals make the right offseason moves they could have a chance to compete for the NFC West title in 2007." Of course they will have a chance to compete for the NFC West title, they have to play the games.

I love ya Mitch, I really do.

There's a reason we don't often hear their names and why they are so forgetable.

Someday we'll have a guy or two actually step up and Brock Forsey somebody for us.

My impression was that Elton Brown was such a poor performer that he had been all but cut--I haven't been counting him as a potential contributor, simply due to reputation. Is there really realistic hope about him?

I hope Mitch is right about many if not most of these players. There's no reason why Bronson, Gorin, and Hunter can't become starters if they perform at even a near-average NFL level, and we sure need several others for depth.

It's going to be interesting where he fits in. After showing some promise in his rookie year , he vanished last year. It will be put up or shut up for him now. I remember we were high on him in the 05 draft and thought we got a steel there. Here's another one that needs to get more motivated and intense.

I think everyone Mitch lists has potential but Boyd. A QB who throws more picks than TDs in College and then follows that up with the same thing in NFL Europe isn't a guy who has a bright future. Sure he is a better athlete than Navarre but Navarre is probably a better QB(and thats not saying much).

I have the most hope for these guys...

DT Jonathan Lewis
LB Brandon Johnson
CB Darrell Hunter
G Elton Brown

All are still young and could provide, at the very least, quality depth at positions that the Cards have had a history of having problems at. That said they all have a lot to prove but a whole training camp to do it.

I'm not sure what the deal is with Brandon Gorin...if he is good enough to start for the Patriots(even if it wasn't regularly) how can he not be good enough to be active for the Cardinals on gameday? Was there a lingering injury? Did he and the coaching staff not "click"? What was it?

Saw Roger play in college (my best friend/neighbor's nephew had been the starting QB @ NAU the last 4 seasons). Was really high on Roger but injuries have held him back. I think if he can stay healthy, he can be a very effective back in the NFL. Tremendous speed and terrific hands. Great 3rd down option...

Wasn't sure why we didn't give this kid a chance at PR earlier in the season. Loads of speed and athleticism. Would love to see him get a real shot...

Very athletic for sure... but then again, so was Josh... Boyd also has a strange throwing motion. He played in the pre-season game last season for Pitt, and for what it's worth, he looked pretty decent for a rookie...

Whiz wants to play tough, physical football and Bronson has the goods to make a splash.

I have given up on this guy... Saw him whiff on far too many key blocks from the FB position. He is definitely NOT the answer at FB. In fact, if he didn't even make the team this year I would not be surprises at all...

6. DE A.J. Schable. This kid has a non-stop motor and a nose for the football. An old-fashioned blue collar player who leaves it all out on the field. I think this kid is a winner.

Really like A.J.!! Got a great nose for the ball - always seems to be around it! I think he's ready to step it up and be a much more consistent force for us this year!!

I was excited as well Mitch with this pick. Lewis was so dominant at times at VA Tech. Big camp for him this year. He needs to show he belongs and can be counted on...

8. LB Brandon Johnson. If this kid puts on some muscle this off-season and maintains his outstanding speed, he could help the team as a cover LB and might eventually challenge for good playing time at OLB.

Fast... And uh, well... Fast... Really didn't see much else from Brandon other than his speed... Like Lewis, this will be a big camp for him. If he's not on the squad come opening day, wouldn't be surprised at all...

9. CB Darrell Hunter. Talk about speed...Hunter is the fastest player on the roster. The rap on him was playing soft, but he showed some toughness and tenacity on special teams while showing outstanding chase-down speed.

Now here's a guy I really, really hope can prove he belongs!! Lord knows we need a CB to step up. Hunter is a burner and seems to be a real gamer... C'mon Darrell!!! Make it happen!

10. G Elton Brown. The Big E...was ineffective and seemingly unmotivated last year. But, this kid has real talent...he's got a big frame and yet he is suprisingly agile and effective on the move. He's got a clean slate with the new staff and the opportunity to impress this time around.

I'm about ready to give up on this kid... He seems so lazy, slow, un-motivated... I don't know... 'Course I would love to see him do well. But I just don't see it happening...

The guys below:
Gorin
Bronson
Schable

And especially Elton Brown

Are all going to be cut because they are either unmotivated and unwilling to work hard, or just don't have the skill to play in the NFL.

I don't want to see any of these players on the team next year.

Interesting indeed... Between the new coaching staff and the end of the "Green Guys" discriminating, I think, some of these guy will bring something to the table.

Gorin and Brown
Gorin and Brown will be interesting to follow. I doubt either would have made a huge difference last season, but at the same time you have to imagine that they are better than being inactive for all games.
Brown is übertalented, but lacks heart and conditioning. He looked okay as a rookie. Decent play with some mental mistakes, but appearantly he didn't develop.
Gorin wasn't good enough to get playing time here, despite being an average starter for the Patriots. With a fresh start and Grimm, he should at least be a solid back-up.

These two are IMO an example of Green's weird preference for starting a bad player that he liked over a better player that he didn't like.
My brain simply cannot apprehend how a back-up guard (Liewienski), who only has been on the team for a week can start at RT over any of these guys.

Nice write up Mitch. It will be interesting to see how the new coaching staff evaluates the present talent on the team. IMO we have a much better staff than we had with Denny's cronies. This list respresents young talent that perhaps with better teaching can have some surprises for the Cards.

One of the local shopping malls here in Virginia has had an autographed Elton Brown helmit for sale for over a year. They are asking $375.00.

I told them I'd buy it, but I wouldn't pay more than $100, to which the guy said the helmit alone cost more than that.

My response, "Not when you let Elton Brown sign his name on it."

I hope Elton turns it around, because we could sure use some depth on the line. I'm starting to think that Colin Cowherd's opinion of UVA players has some truth to it. (There soft, under achievers who wear hand cream.-Cowherd)

Go Cards!!!

So Gorin cost us a sixth rounder in this years draft. Was it not originally a conditional 7th rounder? What "conditions" were met that made it go to a 6th? Has the new staff already mad a decision on keeping him which upgraded the pick? I'm sure it wasn't playing time that made it a 6th because he didn't play hardly any, if at all, last year....

Since he made the roster, the pick is a 6th

i like the prospect of gorin.
the player i hope that steps up more this season is Leonard Pope.

People are high on McCoy potential. I havn't seen enough of him to say eithier way. Personally i hope all these players step up and contribute to a winning cardinal's season.

Realistically, dang near all of these players will be gone by the end of camp. I don't care who you hire as coach, they are going to put about two dozen of their own guys on the roster in the first year. And, that's probably how it should be. The bottom part of the team will get hit the hardest.
