QB: None. Probably the least talented group of QBs ever in a Senior Bowl. Not a first day pick amongst them.

RB: MVP Tony Hunt, Penn. St. Big and smooth. Nice vision and balance. Runs a tad too high and doesn't have an extra gear. Prediction: 3rd-4th round.

FB: Brian Leonard, Rutgers. Not an NFL FB due to average blocking skills and trimmed down weight (225 lbs.). As a runner and receiver, though, he brings some value. He's tough...has good vision...and a nice little burst. Prediction: 4th-5th rounds.

WR: Dwayne Bowe, LSU was the standout in practice but did zero, nada in the game (2nd-3rd round). The rest of the bunch looks raw...Jason Hill, Wash. St. and Aundrae Allison, East Carolina...look like the best prospects and yet they look like 5th-6th rounders.

T: The standout here clearly was Levi Brown of Penn. St. Has good feet and locks on well. Very sturdy and competitive (1st round). Tony Ugoh, Arkansas, is an imposing player, but very raw (3rd-4th). James Marten, BC, needs to improve his upper body strength (4th-5th).

G: To me the MVP of the game was Josh Beekman, who regsitered one great block after another...and played virtually the whole game. It was his block on MLB Patrick Willis that opened the hole for Tony Hunt's first quarter TD. His pass protection was first-rate, especially on Tank Tyler who is one of the more physical and explosive DTs in the draft (2nd).

Doug Datish, Ohio St. is a fiery, aggressive lineman...but tends to overcommit himself and thus loses his balance more than necessary (4th-5th).

C: Ryan Kalil, USC. Very polished...smart...physical and technically sound (2nd).

Dan Mozes, West Virginia looks quite a bit like Nick Leckey...plays with good energy, maintains a good compact base and snaps the ball with very good pop (5th-6th).

TE: Joe Newton, Oregon St. Tall...pretty solid all around TE. Nothing flashy (5th-6th). Late add-on Ben Patrick of Delaware was impressive as a receiver in practice, but wasn't thrown to much in the game (5th-6th).

DE: The two Nebraska DEs Adam Carriker (2nd-3rd) and Jay Moore (3rd-4th) are physical edge rushers...not particularly agile, but very strong and combative.

Anthony Spencer, Purdue and Tim Crowder, Texas are more athletic rushers, but neither of them really distinguished themselves the way Carriker and Moore did (2nd-3rd).

DT: Amobi Okoye, Louisville, has more upside than any player in this game. A mere 19 years old, Okoye is a super trim atheltic dynamo...with NFL quickness and agility. Tremendous motor...first-rate attitude (1st).

David Patterson, Ohio St. was around the ball all day. Is thought of as a rotation-type player. Needs to add some bulk (4th-5th).

Tank Tyler, NC St. played about as so-so as I have ever seen him play. This guy is super strong...and real good. But, it looks like he's lost his playing shape. Has had some discipline issues at NC St. At this point he could go anywhere from the 2nd to the 4th.

LB: Patrick Willis, Ole Miss, the Butkis Award winner showed why he won the award...he's got a very good nose for the ball and has terrific range...is a better chaser than plugger, however, and may project as an OLB in the pros (2nd-4th).

David Harris, Michigan and Buster Davis, FSU played well...they both are solid players, good tacklers, but not particularly good pass defenders (2nd-3rd).

CB: Leon Hall, Michigan is a gamer...not a real burner, but a top flight competitor (1st-2nd).

Josh Wilson, Maryland...as I said yesterday before the game, Wilson has an incredible nose for the ball...it was Wilson who recovered the first South fumble, coming out of nowhere to take a full speed dive at the ball...and he pulled it right in...has great hands...(2nd-3rd).

S: Brandon Meriweather played very well and instinctively. Has talent, but a questionable background (2nd-3rd).

Tanard Jackson, Syracuse. Outstanding special team player and hard hitting DB (3rd-4th).

K/P: Two blue chip prospects in PK Mason Crosby, Colorado (2nd-3rd) and P Daniel Sepulveda, Baylor (3rd-4th) who kicked a 57 yard boomer into the driving rain.

Depressing Draft Outlook

If Mitch's analysis is correct, then this year's draft doesn't look very good. I know that most of the top players drafted will be underclassmen, but even so the Draft doesn't compare, IMO, to the '06 Draft. We better get a very good one in the 1st round and a good one in the 2nd and 3rd, because it doesn't look like a deep Draft. Hope I'm wrong.

Good thing all of the coaches, scouts, GM's, and just about anyone else on any NFL team left town Friday night after the last practice, and already have their grades on the players. Heard it many times before that the scouts dont even grade the actual game.

Maybe Spanky can ask his scouting buddy if this is true or not or if its just some sort of media myth.

I hear during the East-West Shrine game that many scouts were saying they were going to pay more attention to the actual games this year. Exhibit A for doing so was Marques Colston.

I have not liked what I have seen from Leon Hall .. I think he is overated ..

How about Wilson or Willis in the 2nd or 3rd round .. ?? these sound like solid picks ... we could use someone to replace Huff and CB is definitely a need ...

A vet CB is a need. I'd only take a CB in the draft for depth purposes

Too much of a learning curve for them to help us now

i believe this is so....the practices are more "real" than the games....the game is not too much more than a scrimmage as there are so many restrictions....i didn't watch the game but did watch some of the highlights on nfl network...did they keep the defense to very minimal formations etc??? i know they did that in the past.

How did FS Michael Griffin look? Stats showed 3 tackles with 1.5 (credit) for loss and two pass break ups so he must have done ok.

Seems like you have these rated too low.

i know watching the practices over the week, i wasn't that impressed with players. it seem like all the players were just there. there wasn't any excitment amoung the players and the best player i saw there was a center from texas tech. i dont think this class is as talented as previous classes.

I pretty much agree with Mitch up and down the line.

While I'm not so concerned that this draft isn't deep enough in talent, I'm not crazy about the level of talent at our positions of need near the top of the draft.

The one guy who really intrigued me in the Senior Bowl was Merriweather. His off-the-field baggage appears to stem from two combined incidents and not from a chronic pattern of behavior. If he can reassure the scouts that he's learned his lesson, the thing that impresses me is that he looks (a) big and physical, (b) fast enough to cover speedy receivers and (c) aggressive as all get-out in man coverage. He could either be a playmaking FS or physical cover CB for us.

Agree with you on Merriweather. In spite of his problems he will go first round although it could be mid to late. Griffin had a good game but I really don't know much else about him.

Tony Ugoh is one of the reasons McFadden was a runner up Heisman winner. I have watched him his entire college carreer. He is the real deal. Have no idea where he will be drafted but he will play in the NFL as a starter at some point.

Over the past decade I think we have done worse at drafting DB's than any other position. I think DB's are hard to gauge as there performance is so often tied to the defensive line they play behind. Every once in a while a Deion Sanders comes along but they are few and far between. I would tend not to select a DB in early picks.

Mike Mayock said the same thing. Practices carry more weight than the game

Todd Mcshay says Tony Hunt could go in the second. Mike Mayock says Brian Leonard is a second rounder because of his versatility.
