Well with the CWS just around the corner and the draft a couple months away who are some names to look out for? I believe we have the 9th pick this year.

I like in no particular order:
LHP David Price
RHP Robert Woodard
Rick Porcello
Tanner Robles
Michael Main
Casey Weathers
Nick Schmidt
Neil Ramirez
Joe Savery
Matt Harvey

I know these are all pitchers but we need to develop our farm with arms.

Scout.com has us taking
Daniel Moskos, LHP, R-L, 6’2, 200, Clemson
Will he start in the pros? The D-Backs think so, but it’s nice to know that Moskos’ fallback role would likely be as a “shutdown reliever.”

BTW, Texas has 2 first rounders how did that happen?

I highly doubt we will be as pitcher orientated as the previous two years. We still have a surplus of outfielders in the minors (Upton, Gonzalez, Cyle Hankerd, Gerardo Parra, Chris Rahl, etc.) so there is no need to draft an outfielder.

However, the system is relatively weak at both corners with Brian Barden and Andrew Fie being the only third basemen to make BA's top 30 list ( #20 and 21 respectively) and Chris Carter (#17) being the only 1st baseman.

In addition, there is no real prospect in the minors at the catcher position. Since Montero has graduated, there is not one catcher in the top 30. Even though that might change with 2005 and 2006 draft picks like Josh Ford, John Hester and Justin Brashear, the system remains very weak at catcher.

The spot where this team's weakness is abundantly clear is with left-handed pitchers. The only prospects at this position are Brett Anderson, Greg Smith, and Evan MacLane.

Although I know that the best player available should be taken in the MLB draft, I suspect the D'backs to go after the best pitcher, catcher, or corner infielder that falls to them. I will be very surprised if they even consider taking an outfielder in the first ten rounds.

If all the top pitching prospects are gone, then I would go with SS/3b Todd Frazier. He has done relatively well this year and could be that good power hitting third baseman of the future for the D'backs.

Very good assessment, I forgot about Doolittle, reminds me of Owings. I agree that our corner infield prospects and pitching are lacking in our system. The good news is that as of now we have 3 picks before the second round and will probably get another one if Scherzer doesn't sign, which is a good possiblity. A couple of pitchers and corner infielders would be great. You really got to like the HS talent in this draft, it is more impressive than the college level talent in my opinion even with Price.

I agree, this draft is one of the deepest with HS talent in recent memory. I would much rather get a college pitcher than a high schooler, but that may be because I am from the Billy Beane school of thinking. However, this year, especially since the high school ranks is so deep and we have 3 or 4 picks before the second round, it might pay off to pick up a few high-risk, high-reward HS pitchers.

In addition, this draft should be a great measuring stick on how much of an impact Rizzo had on our farm. Here is to me crossing my fingers that it was the individual scouts.

With that said I feel bad for ASU as they have 4 of the top 25 HS players recruited but won't see any at Packard Stadium next spring. I would love the D'backs to get Doolittle, I don't know much about the P Scout.com has us taking. We definitely need to stay away from Brackman, is there any possibilty of David Price dropping to us?

David Price is widely considered the best player in the draft. Anything is possible if he has really high contract demands, but I don't see it happening.

Looks like the D-Backs should have some great picks in the first two rounds. So we got a pick each for losing Counsell and Batista, but no pick for losing Luis Gonzalez?

I wish they would've just done away with supplemental picks. The Padres are getting five picks for Woody Williams, Dave Roberts, Alan Embree, Ryan Klesko, and Chan Ho Park. That's just plain ridiculous.

We did not offer Gonzo arbitration, therefore, we could not receive a draft pick for him.

Did the Padres offer all them arbitration because I thought they were trying to get rid of some of those guys.

I am surprised Justin Jackson, the SS from VA, is considered the 64th vest prospect, he was considered a 1st round pick a coule of months ago. Tim Alderson is another guy I hope the D-Backs get a hold of, local boy that is one of the top 5 HS SP's in the country this year, hopefully we can sign him away from his college committment. BTW what do the asterisks next to the names indicate?

Koufax Drafted

Forty-one years after he retired from baseball, Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax was the final player chosen in the draft to stock the six teams for the inaugural season of the Israel Baseball League.

Koufax, 71, was picked by the Modi'in Miracle in the draft conducted by former major league general manager Dan Duquette, who heads baseball operations for the league.

"His selection is a tribute to the esteem with which he is held by everyone associated with this league," said former big leaguer Aret Shamsky, who will manage the Miracle.

Shamsky noted that should Koufax elect to pitch on opening day, he will have had 14,851 days between starts, so he should be well rested.

I hope the Diamondbacks continue to draft mostly college players, taking a high school player is more risky. They have been following the principles of Moneyball the past yeas and it has been successful.

I don't exactly agree. This years college RHP class isn't very deep. Combine that with the level of HS talent available, I could see the D-backs going for some prep players.

RHP Tom Alderson is going to end up a great player somewhere, the kid has size and talent to go pretty high in the draft, wouldn't mind taking him the the supplemental or 2nd round. As good as he is there are several other HS P's that will go ahead of him in the first round, watch.

Preferring to draft college players over high schoolers is hardly a concept limited to or initiated by the book, if that's what you are inferring.

6-6, with a fastball around 88-91 mph, sounds like a good prospect to draft.

He kind of reminds me of Brett Jacobsen and Bruan Matusz who both were drafted but remained committed to their college LOI's, Everyone knows about Mutusz and leading the NCAA in K's but what kind of year did Jacobsen have?

Jacobsen is pitching in the bullpen:
2-0, 4.20 era, 15 IP, 10 H, 9 BB, and 16 Ks

So he is doing relatively well. He should move into the rotation next year.

Alderson is pretty good, but I wouldn't draft him in the first or the second. A few years in college would be so beneficial for him. Hes not going to overpower any professional hitters throwing 90mph heat, and thats basically his mantra right now as a pitcher. I've actually faced the kid multiple times and hes good... but I honestly don't think he is the type of pitcher the D'Backs would want to go after.

I haven't faced Matusz (not sure about this) but I've faced Jacobson and I think Jacobson was more polished then Alderson with his pitch repertoire.

I do not have a subscription but I did find out that BA has Washington taking Scherzer at #5 while they have us taking Phillipe Aumont.

I would still love to have Scherzer signed but if he is not, we can still get a pretty good prospect with the compensation pick.

Aumont would be a real solid pick-up for this team.
