Of these guys, I really hope that Rod takes some initiative and retains Macklin, Griffith, Milligan and either Biesel or Darling. Who knows how bad Darling's injury actually was, but it would be a poor decision to go into free agency with a new coach who may not be hired until early February and a large portion of your training camp roster to hire. Macklin deserves the opportunity to compete for the starting job again, and Griffith made a lot of plays for this team. We need help at backup linebacker, and Darling or Beisel present good depth at the position.

It goes without saying that Leonard Davis needs the Franchise tag affixed to him. We'll have plenty of opportunity to negotiate with other FA OTs and players even if we "only" have $28 million under the cap.

I agree and would probably sign both Beisel and Darling - at least until we know what we have in our rookies etc. in camp.

The rookie cap is going to take up about $5.5M, so there's $22.5M to resign Macklin et al and other Free Agents.

Thank, Joe. As usual great job that provide us with a great overview of the cap situation.

I'm trying to make sure I read this correctly.

Old rule : 4 Accrued Seasons = Unrestricted Free Agent

New rule : 5 Accrued Seasons = Unrestricted Free Agent

Is this correct?

If it is, this new CBA is better for the owners than the owners realized.

That is the way I understood it. I could be wrong. I lost my last contact I had at the NFLPA a few weeks ago so I dont know anyone on the inside that can clarify for me anymore. But it is in the new 200+ page CBA document, but then again most of it is in lawyer speak so...

If I am corrcet on the issue what I am not sure of as of yet is if players are grandfathered into the old rule and this newer rule only starts with this past seasons rookies.

Why do you say that? He's a backup that's an okay goaline back. He's not going to start anywhere, and he's not going to have a role bigger than what he has here. Why not stay?

With a good OL I think Shipp will be a starter somewhere. There are several teams needing a starting RB. Jones did not look good her but look at him now. Two years in a row over 1200 yds. His brother even went over 1000 yds this year. First time two brothers have gone over 1000 yds in same year.

Jones was on Jim Rome yesterday. Great interview. His mother and father were both coal miners. His mother worked the night shift and his father the day shift. Jones has one brother and 5 sisters and all have gone, finished or in college. Said they had only one bathroom and one car. After he was drafted he bought his mom and dad a new house and a new car for all brothers and sisters. Not a word about the Cards but sounded like a nice guy. Kind of guy I like to see make a success of his life. I think he had enough credits to graduate after only three years of college. Said his mom and dad wants all of the kids to complete college.

Joe, doesn't it say "or less than four seasons in a Capped year" (in the RFA definition)? Aren't all the years capped (this year would have been uncapped if there hadn't been a new CBA)? So it looks to me like the rule is still the same. But you're the expert, so you probably know better than I.

Thats what threw me off, because there wont be an uncapped year for a while now yet they have under the description of that tender amounts for for the 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 season all capped years. If it really is for uncapped year only then why even post the tender amounts for the capped years. Sort of a contradiction of sorts and why it has confused me a little.

His first paragraph talks about the re-signings that he wants, and he mentions franchising Davis as well.

I can't believe I actually agree with K9. I think Griffith is the only one on K9s list that is expendable but I do like how he was a physical presense this year.

I believe that franchising Big is a must. There just isn't another LT out there that looks promising if Davis leaves. By keeping Davis we have at least one more year to make sure we have an acceptable replacement for him before letting him go.

Ross's salary is the worst to look at. Pace's is tough too.

I just cannot believe how much money Okeafor is getting from us.

Why do you have such a problem with Chike? The guy has played well and hard for us.

Chiki Okeafer at $5.4 M is a little high, but he's played close to that salary. If the Rookies min is close to $500K Chiki was about a $4M player last year. Remember, the cap has gone up drasticly in the last 3 years and $5M a year is no longer that much. If you took the cap 109M / 53 players = $2M per player, so I'd guess that would be the salary of a general backup player/marginal starter.

Ross sure has not been worth his money as he has failed two years in a row now.

I concur that Shipp is gone. Only at the end of his tenure did the Cards really seem to appreciate his value. I’m not certain he’s a true starter, but he would be a solid member of the two back rotation so many teams are using. I wish him well. I don't think there was a game in which he was given a chance that he didn’t leave it all on the field.

Well stated as usual Harry. The man plays with heart. He has his faults but he gives it everything he has when he is out there I always thought.

That leg injury took a little pop from his step. The year before he was one of the best back in the league without anybody noticing. I think he averaged the second most yards per touch behind LT (5+ yards)

If Shipp is gone then we need to look at a RB or DE at the number 5 slot if we feel one is available worthy of a #5. I am comfortable that Jamal Anderson is and he can make an immediate impact. I would think the Oklahoma back would be a consideration if he is still there. It sure looks to me like you need two good RB's in the NFL. Just look at the teams in the playoffs.

The year that he had 250 touches without scoring a TD? The year he averaged 3.5 YPC?

To find out other teams real cap numbers, I found the forum that pretty much gets you all the info.

http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/AmCapNFL/messages

It is a site where other team cap managers use to post there numbers or the web story.

You have to sign up in the group but it really gives you a better insite as to what teams have for there cap numbers.

Enjoy
