Great start to the season as the Cats beat Gonzaga 14-0. Preston Guilmet had a no-hitter going into the 9th inning but it was broken up. Andy Lopez has said this is the deepest pitching staff he has had here at Arizona and he thinks it is one of the deepest in the Pac-10. The Cats are young but have a lot of guys who played last year. The key will be if Colt Sedbrook plays this year. Right now he is sitting out for personal problems.

Here is an article on today's win.

Using metal bats is like shooting on an eight foot hoop. Worthless sport.
College football uses smaller balls, college basketball has a closer 3-point line and the games are shorter. There's plenty of differences between college and pros. I wouldn't hate on college baseball just for that.

Since baseballamerica didn't include their usual top 100 college players in this year's prospect handbook, I do not know which players in the Pac-10 are worth looking up. I guess I will just have to shell out the good 50 bucks to see the list; that is, if I do not find a site that has a similar list for free.

Watch Out For The Wildcats

It was hard to get a read on Arizona entering 2007. The Wildcats have talent, for sure, but much of it is very young talent, and who knows how young players will perform? Well, if the opening weekend was any indication, Arizona could surprise some people in the Pacific-10 Conference. The Wildcats were dominant in a weekend sweep of Gonzaga, starting with Preston Guilmet’s near no-hitter on Friday night. Guilmet, a sophomore righthander, retired 17 in a row at one point and carried his no-no into the ninth inning, but Gonzaga’s Evan Wells singled to start the ninth. Guilmet led the Wildcats with 94 innings a year ago, and he looks ready to emerge as a legitimate Friday night starter in the Pac-10. First baseman/DH C.J. Ziegler also had an encouraging debut, going 4-for-5 with three doubles, which tied the school’s single-game record. Righthander Mike Colla, a highly touted recruit out of Fresno, Calif., last year, threw 4.2 shutout innings in relief of Daniel Schlereth on Saturday, which is another very positive sign for the Wildcats. Then senior lefty Brad Mills allowed just one run over 6.2 innings Sunday. If Colla can slide into the weekend rotation to complement Guilmet and Mills, Arizona’s staff will be formidable. That might allow the Wildcats to slide Schlereth to the closer role, where he could thrive thanks to his power arm.

Congrats to Preston Guilmet who was named "National Player of the Week!"

http://www.arizonaathletics.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=1600&ATCLID=784933

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona sophomore Preston Guilmet has been named one of three Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper announced on Monday.

The right-hander from Citrus Heights, Calif., flirted with the seventh no-hitter in Arizona history for eight strong innings in UA’s season-opener vs. Gonzaga last Friday. He allowed just three base runners (two BB, one HBP) over the first eight innings and at one point retired 17-straight Bulldog hitters before allowing a base hit to lead off the top of the ninth inning. Despite missing out on the no-no, Guilmet still picked up the victory after allowing just the one hit over 8 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked two in the 14-0 Arizona victory.

Guilmet is the first Arizona player to be recognized by the publication with national POW honors since John Meloan who also narrowly missed out on a no-hitter in UA’s 2005 season opener against New Mexico.

Arizona will take on Utah Valley State Tuesday and Wednesday at Jerry Kindall Field at Frank Sancet Stadium. Both games are scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

Zona90, I admire your persistance. You are a true fan. Like Maotosi, I just can't get interested in college baseball.

I would not get to pumped up until after this weekend when they finally play a team that has pitching.

Cats beat #8 Cal State Fullerton and All-American pitcher Wes Roemer.:)

FULLERTON, Calif. – Sophomore Preston Guilmet tied a career high with nine strikeouts and out-dueled preseason All-American Wes Roemer, as Arizona defeated No. 8 Cal State Fullerton 2-1 at Goodwin Field on Friday.

The Wildcats (9-0), who have won 14-straight dating back to last season, remain unbeaten on the year and have tied the best start to a season under head coach Andy Lopez (9-0 in 2005).

Guilmet (2-0) dominated over 7 2/3 innings, giving up an unearned run on five hits while issuing only one walk. The right-hander struck out the first four batters he faced on the minimum of 12 pitches and finished the contest with 100 pitches, 71 for strikes.

Guilmet turned the game over to sophomore closer Daniel Schlereth with two outs in the eighth inning. The left-hander slammed the door and proceeded to pick up his third save of the season over the final 1 1/3 innings. He struck out three of the five batters he faced and walked one.

Roemer (2-1), who eliminated the Wildcats in the Fullerton Regional in the championship game as a freshman in 2005 and defeated UA in the regular season as a sophomore last year, was charged with his first loss of the year after giving up two runs on seven hits over eight full innings. He finished with nine strikeouts and no walks.

Offensively, the Wildcats scored first in a contest for the ninth straight time this season. Freshman Kevin Rodland put the Wildcats on the scoreboard in the third when he tripled with one out to right center and scored on a sacrifice fly by classmate Dwight Childs in the following at-bat.

Fullerton rallied to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth when catcher John Curtis drove home Joel Weeks with a one-out single up the middle. Arizona answered in the top of the fifth after Brad Glenn doubled down the left field line to lead off the frame and was driven home two batters later by freshman Erik Castro’s single up the middle.

Both Arizona and Cal State Fullerton had numerous opportunities to score throughout the game, but both Guilmet and Roemer effectively worked out of several jams. The Wildcats ended up leaving six runners on base in the game, while the Titans left seven.

Individually, freshman Robert Abel finished with two of Arizona’s seven hits in the ballgame, and sophomore T.J. Steele extended his hitting streak to 17-straight games dating back to last season with a leadoff double in the seventh.

Arizona and Fullerton will continue the series with game two of the three-game set on Saturday at 7 p.m. MST at Goodwin Field. Senior left-hander Brad Mills (2-0) is the scheduled started for the Cats.

I couldn't agree more. I honestly think they should probably go to wood in college baseball but there's something about the aluminum bats that just makes it special.

I hate to admit it but a very impressive win against a very good pitcher.

It was, especially since the infield consists of three freshmen. This Cat team is very young but they have talent.
