With our season finally ending and all the threads about other teams games, finally we have something to look forward to, getting better hopefully. Byrnes has said we will increase payroll in order to improve our ball club, we'll see. How do we ge better, according to a D'Back player, we need a hard-ass veteran to keep guys in line.

I say we need two SP's, bullpen help of course an maybe a veteran 1B. Here is what Piecoro thinks we need to do:

I agree with the moves, especially the Penny acquisition, the guy belongs in the NL, solid #4 guy to replace DD. Maybe bring back Garland who had a nice stretch prior to being dealt, he mentioned he cold see himself back in ARZ next year depending if LA declines his option. As for the bullpen, Lyon had a good year in DET, I personally would like to see him back, Betancourt is a little old but effective and his availability depends on COL declining his option. I am on the fence with Nady, didn't play all year after elbow surgery, probably more of a 1B than OF but if you move CJ to LF then okay, I worry that he won't be as productive as he was in SD two years ago but if he comes cheap then its not so much of a concern.

Thoughts?

Get rid of Snyder asap... can't believe how much we pay that guy...

I think Scherzer might be more of a guess as a starter than Webb... M<ax really needs to show he can pitch into the 6th and 7th innings on a much more consistent basis. With only two pitches, he just might be more of a closer than a starter...
Penny could be a solid #4. Would be awesome to see CoJack come back and play well. I think picking up Nady would be a smart move. And yes, they NEED more quality arms in the pen.

I'd like to see a big lefty bat in the lineup hitting cleanup between Upton and Reynolds all season long. He is already on the roster.

I haven't given up on Brandon Allen at 6'2" 235, who showed power potential and is a smooth fielding 1B.

If given the chance to audition for that role from the start of Spring Training, I think he'll come through.

If he's not given the chance, or is kept at the bottom of the batting order, it will be the D'backs' loss.

With our current roster, there is no justification for not letting it happen.

Matt Williams has been hired as the new third base coach. I really don't know what to think about this. I thought maybe the new third base coach would come from the minor league level.

Doubtful we sign Soriano. He is a type A free agent and we aren't going to be giving up picks. The list you have is decent, though I would leave of Garland. I think Lyon and LaRoche may be too expensive but we will see. One name we may add to the list of guys to look at is Chen Ming Wang. He is probably going to be non-tendered by the Yankees. He is a sinker-ball pitcher who would fit in well at Chase.

The guys I picked were around the 15-30 area of SI's list, this is not a good FA year. Unless we pull a couple of trades we may have to over-pay. Another 1B option is Hank Blalock who would come cheap but his production has been bad due to injuries the last couple of years. With Gonzalez, Soriano and LaRoche, ATL is going to have a tough time signing all of them unless they can rid themselves of Lowe, lets see what JB does.

Okay, with the finalized FA designations out, there are 4 relievers that should interest the D'Backs. All of them are Type B so they won't cost us draft picks.

RHP Bob Howry - Valley native and very solid, D'Backs rumored to be targeting.

LHP Joe Beimel - Another solid bull pen guy who would be our lefty specialist.

LHP Scott Eyre - A tad on the older side but would be nice addition if we couldn't get Beimel.

RHP Kiko Calero - One of the guys Piecoro mentioned the D'Backs may be targeting. Had a nice year with FLA last season.

Getting 2 of these guys in addition to a Brad Penny and a 1B wul fit Byrnes plan of getting better on a budget. I have cooled on the thought of Adam LaRoche as scouting reports say he is a second half player that struggles through the first half of the season. On top of that he will probably be targeted by a number of teams that miss out on top tier FA hitters. Hopefully a deal for Snyder can net us a 1B, hopefully one that is under contract for 1 year so we can plug in Allen Opening Day 2011.

Heilman is okay. I would prefer Allen start next year. He's gonna tear up triple A, he's proven himself there already. If he struggles, he struggles, at least he'll get 450+ AB's against BIG LEAGUE pitching. Yes, i know he struggled in the AFL, but he belongs in 'Zona, not Reno.

What I don't get is what is taking Byrnes so long to get what we need. Assuming we forget about the trade market, guys like LHP Joe Biemel are out there which is someone that could help solidify our bullpen. Look into Xavier Nady or Han Blalock, they can't be demanding big bucks neither can Brad Penny or Jon Garland. All these guys can be had for a total of about $10M.

Howry? My roomate is a Cubs fan, and I told him somewhat excited that we signed Howry... His response:

"Howry? Haha When he would come in the games, we used to say, 'Howry (How are we) going to lose this one?'

Let's be honest you can't put the horrendous play of the Cubs on Howry, his numbers have been pretty impressive over the last 5 years.

I don't get it. The Diamondbacks have spent over $8 million this offseason on basically no impact player. Byrnes is hoping once again that one of these veterans will find lightning in a bottle.

Welcome to the new Arizona Diamondbacks organization. Gone are the Colangelo days of signing high profile FA's to win championships, in are the more fiscally sound D'backs who will embrace the "small market team" moniker. Their new slogan is "quantity over quality", Brynes said he was going to get starting pitching, a couple of relievers and a bat. Can't fault him for false advertisement, he did what he said he was going to do and at the price he said he would do it for. To be fair, this was a terrible FA market, Bay isn't going to solve the NYM's problems, Lackey is getting paid as an ace when he isn't and Holliday will not put Cardinals in the World Series.

We just need to hope that our "core" clicks this season and Webb returns to form. Getting another power hitter or a true lead off man would be great but we are strapped for cash.

That is the season, in a nutshell. If Webb is healthy, and the core clicks, we are in contention.

If not, it wouldn't matter if we signed a big bat or not.

If Webb is healthy and gets off to a good start, I would not be surprised if they trade him before the deadline because he said he was not going to give the Diamondbacks a home discount for his new contract.

Heck, I imagine Webb and a number of our other guys would give almost any other team a 'getmeoutahere' discount.
