Monday is the MLB draft and I did not see a thread so I thought I would start one. The Diamondbacks have the 6th pick and I hope they take Deck McGuire, a pitcher from Georgia Tech. From what I have read, he has a very good fastball and could be pitching in the majors next year.

Don't really want Deck McGuire. He is pretty much as good as he will get. If we are going to be taking a college pitcher, which is about 99% certain at this point, then I would want us to go after a guy like Matt Harvey, Chris Sale, or Drew Pomeranz. It they do decide to go after a high school pitcher then it would most likely be Karsten Whitson. He has a real high upside to him. Obviously in a perfect world we could get Jameson Taillon, but that won't happen. Whitson is the next best guy. As I said before it is all but assured we are going to take a college pitcher but who knows. I am pulling for us to take Whitson, whatever thats worth.

SI.com mock:

6. Arizona Diamondbacks
Deck McGuire, RHP, Georgia Tech
A very solid college pitcher, he makes sense for the D-backs and appears to be the consensus pick here. If Pomeranz or Sale fall, they're possibilities, as well, but the Diamondbacks are likely to take a college pitcher no matter who it is.

I hope they don't take a high school pitcher. I hate when they take a high school player in the first ten rounds. It's more a gamble taking a high school player because you really don't know if they will progress. It's the one thing I agree with in Moneyball.

College guys are normally the safe low potential type pitchers. The D-Backs recently have been taking the college guys and you see where that has gotten us. We have a bunch of 4-5 type guys and no aces. Our only ace prospect is Jarrod Parker, who was drafted out of high school.

Yes you take risks taking a high school kid but sometimes the reward outweights the risk. In this case I think Whitson is worth the risk.

I agree 100%. The college arms we took in previous years were low risk low ceiling guys... meaning that they have a great chance to make it to the majors but as low impact guys (i.e. back of the rotation arms).

Drew Pomeranz is the second best pitcher in the draft (behind Jameson Taillon) and is a lefty, something the D'backs need desperately. He might not fall to the D'backs but if he does the team should pounce immediately.

If he is not there I expect the D’backs to go after Deck McGuire but they have also been linked to Matt Harvey out of North Carolina. Harvey was a top rated HS pitcher when he came out a few years ago but fell due to bonus demands. Apparently he has had control problems since then but is still considered a 1st round pick. However, he might be a big reach with the sixth pick overall.

McGuire strikes me as more of a middle of the rotation starter who can be an innings eater (ie later career Andy Benes type) but not someone who can be the ace of a staff. He was a steady performer in college but does not have a high ceiling. The righty also seems to struggle in tough situations and does not produce when dealing with pressure.

Karsten Whitson (Chipley (Fla.) HS) is a name I have been hearing a lot about in regards to the D’backs. He is supposed one of the few high school pitchers in the draft who can move quickly with a mid-90s fastball and plus off-speed pitches.

If Pomeranz is off the board then Karsten Whitson would be a good backup plan. Last years draft proved that the team did not prefer college over high school but took the best talent (still not that big on Bobby Borchering though).

Anyway here are the first six picks as I see them:
1. Nationals - Bryce Harper, c, JC of Southern Nevada
- Hit 29 homers in just over 200 at bats

2. Pirates - Manny Machado, SS, Brito Miami Private HS
- HS SS has a ton of potential, people compare him to A-Rod, but what talented HS SS is not compared to A-Rod?

3. Baltimore - Jameson Taillon, rhp, The Woodlands (Texas) HS
- Best pitcher in the draft falls to the Orioles

4. Royals - Yasmani Grandal, c, Miami
- This one should be easy… the Royals already are said to have a deal in place for the best college backstop in the draft. It has been mentioned as a rumor, then a fact, then a rumor that this deal exists with the latest news being that it is just a rumor. However, where there is smoke there is fire. I believe the Royals pick Grandal here.

5. Indians - Drew Pomeranz, lhp, Mississippi
- I really do not think that the Indians will pass up someone like Pomeranz. A lefty who throws mid-90s is nothing to pass up.

6. Diamondbacks - Karsten Whitson, rhp, Chipley (Fla.) HS
- HS pitcher who throws mid-90s and has the ability to move quickly through the organization. LHP Chris Sale (Florida Gulf Coast) is also a possibility and I cannot believe I forgot him. He is a lot like Pomeranz (Sale is 6-6 and throws a good fastball with a plus off-speed pitch) but he is raw and very skinny.

The D-Backs are supposedly high on Chris Sale and Barrett Loux. Loux has been shooting up the board recently. That said I still want us to take Whitson.

I would be very unhappy if we draft Barrett Loux with the sixth overall pick. With a low 90s fastball and three off-speed pitches Loux has managed to produce good numbers in college. However, I think he is exactly the type of pitcher this organization has recently targeted. None of his pitches translate well to the major leagues. His fastball has some moderate movement on it but that won't fool hitters in the upper levels. In addition, his spike curveball and slider have minimal movement on them leaving me to believe they will be thrown out against higher competition. That would leave Loux with two pitches probably relegating him to the bullpen. If they draft Loux it would be an effort to save money instead of getting best pitcher available.

My the mighty have fallen. Prior to the season I was hoping ARZ would be able to land Renauldo out of LSU but mocks had him in the Top 3, looking at mocks they have him going in the 20's, what's the deal?

From rumors floating around, KC is close to a contract with the University of Miami C. We know WAS will take Harper, Machado should go #2 unless signability is a concern. Taillon will go #3 (BAL's rotation is going to be filthy for years to come), only CLE stands in the way of us and Pomeranz who I hope lands here but McGuire would be a great consolation. We really need to make a run on P's in general in this draft, hopefully we can find bullpen help that is ML ready.

He got hurt and hasn't pitched very well since coming back.

Piecoro has stated that the DBacks aren't interested in Pomeranz for some reason. I really hope they stay away from Deck McGuire. We need some top of the rotation talent.

Smoke and mirrors being set up by ARZ, Pomeranz is the best college arm in the draft, throw in that fact that he is a LHP which we lack in both our ML roster and farm system, we should be interested. Fact is he probably will not make it to #6 and will probably go to BAL or CLE. Toss up between Sale and McGuire, I guess LHP takes precedence. Karsten Whitson is the wild card buy signablility could be an issue as he is committed to UF so he has some leverage.

Sounds like between the two they'll have a very good prospect.

I remember some Johnson guy on Montreal being pretty skinny too!

If we are going to go with a college arm I am hoping that it is Pomeranz. The only question is how much over slot would it take for him to sign. I know they want to stay near slot which is why Loux has been mentioned. While I am still hoping for Whitson I would imagine it is now between Pomeranz, Sale, and Loux. Only a few more hours until we find out.

Draft starts at 4. Right now on MLB network they are doing a preview and they said that Deck McGuire is almost MLB ready but he will be nothing better than a #4 or 5 starter in his career. Ouch.

It sounds like we are going to take Barret Loux with our first pick. He has been rising on draft boards recently but does seem like a reach.

I'm not a fan of the pick but I am now a fan of Loux. Hope he can get to the majors and pitch well. My hope is we went cheap on the first round because there weren't many great players outside of the top 3 and try to draft a couple of guys in the later rounds who fall because of signability, i.e. Matt Helm and Patrick Schuster last year.

We should have traded AJ Hinch to the nationals for the number 1 pick.
