Markieff is slow, short and not athletic.

How many players like that are known for their defense in the NBA. Markieffs best case is probably a Drew Gooden like career or Brian Cardinal.

I always thought Gooden would have been a good addition to the Suns.

Leonard and Marcus Morris falling out of the top 10 killed us. If those two had gone where they were projected then a better player would have fallen.

Morris reminds me of Kurt Thomas. So in a trash draft like this one, would anyone really be upset with Morris turning out to be a younger version of Thomas?

That's a quality player in my eyes. And i have hated every move this organization has made over the last decade. So i don't usually give much credit, but here they made a solid pick considering who's left on the board.

I would be thrilled if we can somehow get Marshon Brooks late in first. He will be the best scorer out of everyone in this draft class.

For the record, the pick the Suns acquired from Orlando in the Gortat trade and sent to Houston was then traded to Minnesota who promptly shipped it off to Chicago, if reports are correct.

The Bulls picked Nikola Mirotic (PF) who is not expected to play in the NBA for a few years, so we won't directly know what Brooks has cost us for some time.

Asked about the choice of Markieff over his twin brother Marcus, Blanks was a bit unclear in his response, "I think the draft's a funny thing. You never know why teams do what they do...As to why Markieff over Marcus, who knows."

Has Blanks ever given a decent answer to anything?

I don't think that's it at all. I think there's a question about how much he can defend and rebound.

ding! ding! ding! ding!

this Morris brother is the PF equivalent of Robin Lopez... slow, not the longest arms and not very athletic... and hell... not even that freaking tall.

ugh...

Name one good defender in the NBA that is an average athlete, slow and undersized, just one.

Now it's all 3??

First off I don't agree with you that he is not athletic or undersized. Your simply wrong. Markieff is bigger, stronger and maybe not as athletic as Marcus but that doesn't mean he is not athletic at all.

Not saying is a leaper but he is definitely at least average in that department. You don't rebound and play defense without being athletic. Also, scouting reports say he is explosive around the rim.

He also has PF size. So no clue what your talking about.

Scouting Report:

  • Size: Markieff Morris has the size of a 4 at power forward.
  • Awareness: His awareness is about equal from both ends of the floor when comparing his awareness to Marcus Morris.
  • Explosive near the Rim: Markieff Morris is explosive near the rim and at the rim.
  • Rebounder: Markieff Morris excels at rebounding on both ends of the floor on offense and defense.
  • A strong, explosive, and physical power forward with a readymade NBA frame
Also, here is one. Your boy Gasol...no the other. Not especially fast, athletic but he is damn tough. Bynum is also not that athletic. He can dunk but that has more to do with his size. Not particularly athletic but he will put you on your butt. Nick Collison is considered tough but not especially athletic. I can name a bunch of guys if you want me to keep going. Not everybody can have LeBron type athleticism. You can be tough and physical in this league without having massive hops.

I love Kurt Thomas and would be ecstatic if Morris turned into anything close to him. Here's my problem with this comparison though. Kurt Thomas is long. As slin has said several times, Morris has short arms. His standing reach is just 8-10.5 and on top of that he he is a very average athlete.

this is just a horrible draft.

Nice post. I am sick of some people not being able to be happy with anything. Suns could sign CP3 and DHoward and Slin and Cheese would still find a reason to complain.

Markieff measured at the combine as one of the 5 worst athletes in the draft.......

Bynum is maybe not athletic but he is BIG.

Markieff is is 6'9 8'10 1/2 standing reach, 31" running leap, 11 bench press repititions, 241lbs
Amare is 6'10 9' 1/2 standing reach, 32" standing leap 36" running leap, 12 bench press repititions, 233lbs

Amare is rather small for a PF. Markieff is much shorter, less athletic and not even stronger.

huh? now i'm linked in with Slin?

good grief... did any of you guys WATCH Markieff play? he played and looked like a friggin' stiff and his measurements are pretty damn weak as well. He didn't pass the eye test OR the measurement test for me.

excuse me if this team hasn't done much to celebrate.

I laud them for getting Gortat, but that's about the only good thing this wretched excuse for a franchise has done in a couple years on the player front.

So are the Suns going to acquire another pick? Miami just did and drafted PG Norris Cole at #28. They did the same thing a few years back when they picked up Chalmers.

and come on but this:

REALLY?! Our GM can't even articulate why Markieff over Marcus? Did they just throw darts and that's what they hit? i mean... you guys... this is their job. shouldn't they have at least prepared to answer a question like this... by you know... figuring it out themselves?

I can't say for certain, but I've heard rumors the Suns felt Markieff's attitude was much better when he was separated from Marcus, whom they viewed as sullen and immature. Maybe Blanks just didn't want to say anything that would upset their new draft pick.

I've got to hand it to the crowd there. They booed Stern EVERY time he came out and even gave a big cheer when Stern said the second round would now be conducted by someone else. Kudos.

This is just wrong on so many levels.

Markieff is not much shorter than Amare. They are pretty much the same height and if you actually think that Amare is stronger than Markieff than you haven't watched him play.

Markieff's strength is generated from his rather ample lower body that he isn't afraid to use.

He isn't Amare but at least he won't turn around and watch the ball when its shot. he will put a body on somebody and he will be aggressive on the boards.

He also plays with a little attitude.

I kind of compare him to Raja Bell, not the greatest athlete but they both play hard with an attitude.

I'll remind people that this is exactly the type of guy the suns haven't had but really need at the power forward position.

Yeah you saw Markieff play against college kids, great.

He is an inch shorter, he has shorter arms, he is a much worse leaper, about the same weight and did less bench press repetitions DESPITE having shorter arms.
