Fair enough. He had 6.5 sacks in 2009, which is better than Matt Roth. According to Pro Football Focus (and it's not my bible, but some people believe in it) he had a lot of pressures last year, but wasn't able to consistently collect sacks.

He's reportedly and excellent special teams player as well as a solid starting OLB. It's slim pickings in the free agency pool for edge rushers, but I'd love to bring in Lawson or Andre Carter to compete with Schofield and maybe push Joey Porter's rotting corpse off the team.

I have no issue with bringing in Lawson to team with Schofield.

I did a quick check of Kent Somers Salary list, and the numbers do not add up at this point. specifically, add the numbers and we are over the 120M salary cap. Remove the released and traded guys and the numbers are better, but not the remainder that Somers stated.
I do know that something looks wrong with Joey Porter's number.
Somers has him at 4,416,667(Im guessing that accelerating his bonus and the 1.5 M salary make up that number.
The trade for Hightower is not in the list?

I come up with 105,833,155 for the top 51(currently)
I come up with 106,883,155 for the top 53(currently)

so close, but not Kent's numbers.

Some additional thoughts.

Derek Anderson was released, but we are hit with his accellerated bonus of
1,300,000 and DRC was traded, but we are hit with his accellerated bonus of
1,060,000. Both of those numbers place them in our top 51.

I hope joeshmo can shed more light on the subject.

Levi Brown's cap hit: :barf:

This... some of the best tackles in the league don't have a 9.4 millioin dollar salary...

can someone remind me again why he is still on this team with that number??

2 million, maybe, 9.4 million, really?

It's a CAP number... not what he's making this year. And if he's cut, all the prorated bonus comes off the CAP this year.

I also noticed that Gerald Hayes is not on the list.
Since he was released I would expect some cap hit.
That may be the difference between Kent's numbers and
the numbers I come up with.

Hayes was flat salary, no bonus. There was no hit.

Some interesting info.

Guys that will probably make the team and not in top 53(currently)

John Skelton
Sam Acho
Jim Dray
A.J. Jefferson
Anthony Sherman
David Carter
DeMarco Sampson

Not saying all will make the 53 man roster, but some are likely to.

Trade released, doesnt matter, accelerated bonus cap hit goes to the original team.

Also those costs are counted as dead cap space which is additional to the top 51 highest paid players still on the roster.

51 players + Dead Cap Space = total cap cost.

I have to believe that Levi Brown will be cut next year if he doesn't have a great year this year. 9 million is way to much money for him. I do think both Sendlein and Colledge got fair deals and are cap friendly for the future. Both are better pass protectors than run blockers, but I think thats what Whiz wants anyway. I know he's a fan favorite but Adrian Wilson is making more money than he is worth.

To be clear. The Levi number is a CAP hit, not what he's making this year.

Great stuff Joe!

Assuming a 120 mil cap and the release of DA and Hayes the Cards would have ~ 41,563,083 to spend on FA and re-signings/extensions.

Then there is the 7,333,333 that Porter is on the books for which could be added to the potential spending amount ($48,896,416).

The Cards FO has promised us to be aggressive and the theme of "All In" could make for a good FA period for us. Get a QB and re-sign Sendlein, Lutui, Branch and possibly Breaston would be a great start.

How about signing Campbell tonight!
