Edit

D-Backs take Braden Shipley, Braden Nevada (NV) RHP and he is a JR.

The University of Nevada ace makes you take notice with a quick, loose arm and a plus fastball -- one that has touched 98 mph. But he's more than just fastball velocity. He throws both a curve ball and a changeup, and while they're not as consistent as his fastball, both should be at least Major League average in the future. Shipley is generally around the plate with all three pitches and isn't afraid to go right after hitters. He might not be a part of the elite group of college arms in the class, but he isn't far behind, and a very strong junior year had him moving up Draft boards everywhere.

What is interesting is that they took a college pitcher. I wonder if he is targeted for the bullpen.

Here are a couple of mocks.

http://www.mymlbdraft.com/MLB-Mock-Draft

Draft#:15
Alex Gonzalez
Ht/Wt:6' 3"/200 lbs
Position: RHP
School: Oral Roberts

http://www.draftsite.com/mlb/mock-draft/2013/

Dominic Smith OF Serra High School (HS-CA) 6' 0" 200
DraftSite's comments: The Diamondbacks are apparently looking for bats and even though Paul Goldschmidt seems to have first base locked down for the near future, you can’t worry about that when the best bat available is still around.

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports...ock_draft_and_thoughts_for_draft_morning.html

15) Diamondbacks: Ryne Stanek, RHP, Arkansas: The most logical choice if the Dbacks want a pitcher.

http://footballfanspot.com/2013-mlb-mock-draft

15. Arizona Diamondbacks- OF Hunter Renfroe (Mississippi State)
The Diamondbacks could go in a number of different directions with this pick. However, after trading Justin Upton and not receiving an outfield prospect in return, they don’t really have a top outfield prospect unless you count Adam Eaton, who is still rookie eligible, but is currently at the major league level on the DL with a serious elbow injury. He’s a different type of outfielder than Renfroe anyway.

Hunter Renfroe OF Mississippi State $2.4345M
Gonzalez could be the pick here if Renfroe is off the board, but I think Renfroe would be too tempting to pass on this “late” in the first round.

Aaron Judge, OF, Fresno State
The Diamondbacks could go a lot of different directions with this pick, but Judge would give Arizona another good bat to develop. The Diamondbacks have shown interest in him according to MLB.com

15. Diamondbacks: J.P. Crawford, SS, Lakewood HS (Calif.)
A college hitter like Judge could fit here. So could a high school lefty like Ian Clarkin. But you can never have enough shortstops

There will be two for sure, Chipper Jones and Ken Griffey, Jr., but there are none as of now I believe. A-Rod would have been one if he was not a dirty cheater. There are a few in recent years that have a chance like David Price, Adrian Gonzalez, Stephen Strasburg, Bryce Harper and even Justin Upton. I am doubtful on Harper, Price and Upton and Strasburg is 50/50 is he can get his health in order. Mauer is an interesting one to me as well. if he gets 3000 hits he could get in.

Correct - ZERO are currently in the HOF.

Griffey Jr and Chipper will be the first.

Seems like a great pick. I have seen him go as high as #4 in some mocks.

ARZ ends Day 1 selecting RHP Aaron Blair out of Marshall & Justin Williams out of Terrebone HS in Louisiana.

I was hoping ARZ would have took OF Austin Wilson out of Stanford but their love for college pitchers led them to Blair. Justin Williams, currently a HS SS, is a big boy and is expected to end up at 1B, 3B or RF. He is 6'2 215, with "upper deck HR power", but is considered very raw and aside from power doesn't have a lot of tools. Looks like a young Ryan Howard. Committed to play for LSU but most likely won't end up in college.

I can see why he dropped. College player who hasn't been allowed to develop a curve. He has 3 or 4 years to figure it out. That's a short amount of time. But the potential benefits appear to far outweigh the risk.

The D'Backs got Justin Williams? That kid is legit. He's been getting a lot of local coverage down here.

Keith Law isn't a fan and put Arizona in the questionable category because of it.

I loved Braden Shipley, the D-backs' first pick. But they earn the prize this year for the first selection of a player I did not rank on my top 100: Louisiana prep infielder Justin Williams, who has big raw power but a well below-average hit tool and no position.

Not to say he will be the next Goldschmidt or anything, but Goldy supposedly had all kinds of of issues when he was drafted (slow bat, poor defender, ect). My point is that I will wait to see how he looks 2 to 4 years from now before passing judgement.

Yeah. The kid has a ton of raw power though. He also works really hard. I'm just happy he's a D'back. Sorry you guys are disappointed. I hope he pans out though.

I'm not necessarily disappointed, the MLB draft is a huge crap shoot and the kid is still really young. Time will tell if it was the D'backs or Keith Law who was right about his prospects.

Shipley signed today, though thankfully such things in the draft are close to a formality now.
