and then James Sanders is 29. I guess I should have stated I think we are old in some key positions. DL we have three 30+ players and limited depth after them. At S, three of the five players are over 29, and two of those are free agents with limited depth behind them. Lenon is old and I'm not a believer in either Reggie Walker or Stewart Bradley. So, yes, the core of our defense is young but we are old on both the defensive line and at safety, and have no replacement for Paris Lenon on our roster.
Maybe, but if there are two positions where you can afford to go the cheap free agent route, it's ILB and Safety. Those are the two cheapest positions to get quality players in free agency. Wilson's under contract, but I think that Rhodes is a must-sign.
According to Football Outsiders: "As for 'non-skill players,' research we did in 2007 for
ESPN the Magazine suggested that defensive ends and defensive backs generally begin to decline after age 29, linebackers and offensive linemen after age 30, and defensive tackles after age 31."
Wilson is clearly a concern, and we have young players in the pipeline at safety in Rashard Johnson and Justin Bethel. I'm not high on Johnson, but you have to give some of these picks time to develop on your roster.
At the defensive line, we have David Carter waiting in the wings, and Nick Eason and Vonnie Holliday have combined for about 23 snaps per game (including a game or two when Dockett was out). I'm not going to stay up at night worrying about how we're going to replace them.
