A cramp is a spontaneous contraction from an abnormality within the muscle, typically an electrolyte imbalance (eg, potassium, magnesium, calcium), or from misuse or fatigue in athletes.

A spasm is the same sustained contraction, but caused by erroneous nerve signals to contract. A hard spasm would feel just like a bad charlie horse.

You can usually treat the casue of cramps and relieve them, but spasms need to have the abnormal nerve signal treated.

For anyone that cares.

You realize the article you quoted called it a cramp? Also, still not in his back.

I wasn't quoting the article, I was quoting LeBron James himself.

I am 99.9% sure that he knows more about what happened to him than anyone on any online forum. And that's taking into consideration that there are those who are highly educated and those who practice medicine on many online forums (WebMD for example).

You are, however, right about it not being back spasms. I have no idea why I even typed that, it was pretty obvious from watching the game that it was his leg.

You honestly expect James, in the heat of the moment during a frustrating press conference, to keep firmly in mind the medical distinction between a cramp and a spasm? Seriously?

One of the electrolytes involved in the contraction and relaxation of muscles is magnesium. In some kinds of heart attacks it is injected directly into the heart to get that cycle going again. After learning that I tried rubbing 'magnesium oil' on a persistent leg cramp one night - gatorade wasn't helping. I stayed up for 20 minutes to let it dry and by that time the cramp was gone. Its now my goto treatment for any cramps and it never lets me down. (Haven't tried it for back spasms since I haven't had any of those in the last five years.)

Magnesium oil is not a real oil - its a saturated solution of magnesium chloride in water and it feels slippery like oil. It occurs naturally in sea water and in trapped seas like the Dead Sea it can be close to a saturated solution - thats why you float like a cork in such waters. I buy it from Amazon, made by Swanson. It tingles when you apply it and if you have a recent cut or bite it stings - because you are rubbing 'salt' in the wound.

Lebron has a very high amount of muscle mass compared to body fat, he is prone to have cramps at those conditions eventually.

The game shouldn't be replayed because he had cramps, it should be replayed because it can't be that in a NBA finals game the AC is turned off.
There has to be a certain standard or else the Spurs can just turn off the AC again because it will give them an advantage.

It's his body built, he has more muscle mass than just about anyone on the court so he exerts A LOT more energy. He plays hard, he plays lots of minutes - its logical that he is the first to get cramps.

Yep, we had a doctor in Loreto who told me to eat a banana for that exact reason high in magnesium

Huh?

Should we replay all of the Finals games that were ever played in the old Boston Garden? It didn't even have A/C.

97 degrees was the official game-time temperature on the floor for Game 4 of the ’84 NBA Finals.

This whole muscle mass thing has no part in the conversation/equation, Wade even said everybody has played in that kind of heat before. The fact that he plays in a state that is so damn hot just makes it sound like LB has been depending on AC down there, he used to be tough. This isn't the first time Lebron has cramped up, any hippie going on a long hike knows you start hydrating 48 before, incase temps jump or if you run out of water. I guess every other player in that game knows such techniques. Quit making excuses for him, he can't pre-game for hot battles... it didn't even go into overtime.

The Heat always drop game 1 it seems. Nothing to see here folks, move along. I expect that on Sunday Lebron will make San Antonio his biotch.

(Though in the interest of full disclosure, I am rooting for the Spurs here).

I expect his athletic trainer and team physician who were there first hand and inspected him to know and notify LeBron right away about what it was.

Spurs sure outsmarted themselves last when they took out Duncan out of the game on the play in which Bosh got the rebound...

And for as smart as the Spurs play, it's been over 8 years since they have actually won a title.

You might want to recheck your calendar.

Exactly, there are things you can drink beforehand that help but once the cramps start you really have no control of them.

Anybody ripping him for not playing has probably never had leg cramps, it's agony.

I can't believe they don't have backup power to run the HVAC.

I don't think I've ever experienced pain worse than a calf cramp in the middle of the night. Sometimes they're so bad that I can barely walk the next day. If at all.

Is this a bet?

Sex cramps are the worst. So much motivation, so little chance to finish. Usually the calf. :D

It's been 7 years and they came damn close last year. A lot of those years they were not healthy heading down the stretch and that's led to what we've seen the last 3 years Pop developing his bench and letting his starters rest.
