Fumble city. Had major problems with that and injury. He can break one if he lives long enough. Unlikely to get off the line if used as receiver. It's hard to decoy people laying on the ground.
Don't like hearing about the fumbles. That's something at the NFL level that is very difficult to teach

He might be drafted to return kicks, but 4.28 will stretch a defense really fast. :D

I watched some video on JJ Nelson.

All I can say is,

"Run Forrest Run"

Can't tackle what you can't catch. This kid is a speed merchant.

  • 5'10" Height
  • 31 1/8" Arm Length
  • 156LBS. Weight
  • 8 1/4" Hand

Analysis

Strengths

Shows short-area quickness, with an ability to open a throwing window on comeback routes. Has plus hands. Shows good concentration in traffic and does an above-average job of high-pointing ball and competing for throws. Grabs it, tucks it and gets moving quickly. Return specialist. Returns punts and kicks. Had dominant season as kick returner with 38.7 return average and four touchdowns.

Weaknesses

Tiny receiver. Very timid in run blocking, with little desire to try to help as run blocker. Lacks suddenness and twitch off the ball expected from smaller receivers. Routes are rounded and lack sharpness for separation. Play speed underneath is marginal. Lacks shiftiness after catch to be consistent catch-and-run threat as a pro.

Draft Projection

Round 7 or priority free agent

Bottom Line

Rail-thin slot receiver at the next level, but missing the suddenness and "after-the-catch" talent desired for that position. Getting drafted might be a long shot, but his kick-return numbers will have teams taking a close look at him as a specialist.

Pure speed guys who aren't quite the size or toughness to be front line receivers are ideal kick returners. I don't want to see Peterson or Mathieu or John Brown returning kicks and getting smashed. A late round pick can be spent every two or three years on a small burner to bring the ball as fast as possible upfield. Then, when they get broken, get another one.

Sorry I was on the road. I thought I remembered he was a fumbler. He fumbled 10 times in last 2 years. Keep in mind that's with limited carries and against slower, far weaker players than he'll face in the NFL. Also those guys are quite good at pulling out the ball.

Fumbling is a hard habit to break. Especially against NFL talent.

More highlights. Looks good. He is a little thin but hope he can get a little bigger in the card's weight room

He fumbled 4 times last year...2 were recovered by UAB, 2 were lost.

All-American RS. Should be fun to watch.

Born too late.

If Al Davis were alive, He would have been a first rounder!

I loved this kid as a 7th round pick doing the mock draft simulation sites.. 5th is a little earlier than I thought he would go, but you know how BA loves speed.

When the UAB football program was ended, I learned all about JJ and hoped he'd end up here. I'm more ecstatic about this pick then any since the Freddie Joe Nunn pick in 1985.
