Like Bohda's draft but mine would go:

1 - OLB Nate Orchard - Fills a big need without having to trade up.

2 - CB Marcus Peters - Cro is gone, Peters slides in. HB & PP keep him in line. Talent outweighs risk IMO.

.

If availble, id take Peters. Arguably best CB in the draft. Major headcase. But his issues arent drug related, which is better.

Personality issues are easier to manage than substance abuse. Dez Bryant was a huge personality issue cming out, and Dallas has done a good job managing him.

and we have a stronger support system in place. I think he'll be fine.

Erving was considered a 1/2 round talent at left tackle this season he's been moved inside due to need and has flat out been scary dominate especially in the running game

Erving was getting eaten alive at T, thats why he was moved to Center when FSU was having C issues.

I'm thinking about what the Cowboys have accomplished by upgrading the OL.

They took Fredrickson late 1st a couple yrs. ago. Paired with Zach Martin they are both physical in the run game and have upgraded the interior pass pro very well also.

Its not that simple

Titans have also use 2 straight 1st rounders on Olinemen (Chance Warmack and Taylor Lewan) and that line has been AWFUL.

Cooper is NOT a bust, IMO. However we are closer to Tenn. than Dallas in that respect if you want to start taking more interior Oline in the 1st round.

Id like to take a mid round T or Mid round C. Either can potentially upgrade the C or one of the G spots. A mid round T can provide better depth than Sowell.

Im a BPA guy all the way (which is why I keep taking Orchard in all my mocks), but this being a pass rush heavy draft, and AZ approaching "win now" territory, Id feel comfortable making some adjustments in order to fill glaring needs.

pass rush, pass rush, pass rush

+ oline depth

I like Cameron Erving from FSU that kid is a monster at C or G in the late first round. Maybe a guy like Kikaha slips due to past injury in the second or an Eric Striker because of his size will be there both devastating OLB

No interior OL in 1st round. Make that the 11th Commandment.

Cooper was and still is a good pick, if that was meant to be a swipe at him.

Name a better pick in the 2013 draft which isnt hindsight....

We picked 7th, the 1st pro bowler isnt until 18. Between us and then, only Sheldon Richardson and Star Loutelei were worth anything.

VERY bustacular draft. Im happy with Cooper

Exceptionally bad year for QBs. Other than Crableg Stealing Sexual Assaulter, not another pure QB in first 2 rounds. Jake Matthews would be draftable by default if he was in this draft.

If Cards want to take one he will be another Thomas. A hope and a wish.

Boykin et al will meet the same fate as Bobby Griiffin and Johnny Manziel. Read option QBs get abused in the NFL.

Best hope is to get Bryce Petty 2nd round.

I have wanted us to draft a true elite pass rusher for over a decade now. Okafor is doing well but imagine teaming him we another huge threat.
Having said that shoring up our improving Oline interests me as well. I'd prefer a LT who can start off at RT or even OG. This allows for insurance at the LT position in case of injury :stick: plus I fantasize about the Hulk at RT because we have an even better option at LT.

Don't misunderstand, Veldheer deserves a Pro Bowl invite this year IMO and while Massie hasn't been great he has been mostly good. I'm just wanting a dominant Oline like we had in the 70's when I first started rooting for the Cards.

We need to add an ILBer who has the same skill set as DWashout.

RB with some bulk.

A CB to develop.

An OC for the future and yes I'd love to improve our size and strength at the position.

Niklas should be good and Fells seems to be developing and Carlson gets rave reviews from teammates and coaches but we could use an upgrade.

Personally, I think the Cardinals scheme is going to make it tough to get that speed player off the edge because they value physical players setting the edge out of their base defense. It is tough to find edge guys with that physical ability along with elite edge speed. However, you may be able to get that big, physical edge rush with a ton of speed coming from the ILB position.

In this draft, we are actually in an ok position (bottom of round 1) to have a shot at another Okafor sized OLB with pass rush ability. Dante Fowler-Florida, Shilique Calhoun-Michigan St., Alvin Dupree-Kentucky, Nate Orchard-Utah, and Owamagbe Odighizuwa-UCLA are all bigger edge guys who could translate to our base 3-4 defense. Also consider, the Cardinals are playing Okafor with Shaughnessy rather than Acho which signals they feel like Okafor is their smaller or rush OLB.

Offensive line is tough. I like the mix we have for the most part, but I'm not sure of the future for Sowell or Watford. Fanaika is probably not going to be re-signed but Larsen will be under contract and is not a terrible player. If I am the Cardinals, I want a more physical player for the right side of the line, ideally a guy like Collins or Sambraillo who can also play OT.

ILB is a huge need, but I believe we may grab a guy in FA. There are a couple buy low options which I feel may be available that the Cardinals will probably be in on.

We have a roster need at CB, I'm uncertain about our S situation, and it is a great draft for 3-4 DE prospects.

When looking at the offense, there aren't the glaring holes, but that is where we are struggling. The difficult part is that there aren't a ton of options to upgrade TE, WR depends on the Fitzgerald situation, our QBs have struggled to stay healthy but have won, RB is a role, and the line hasn't been terrible. That being said, we still need to upgrade.

Drafting a top 10 interior OL is different than drafting a OG/OT guy at the end of round 1. So I disagree. Zach Martin, Kyle Long, and Travis Frederick show how it can really work in the back third of the first round.

Fowler is one of my favs, but pointless to list because hes not getting anywhere near us.

Shilique Calhoun may be an option, but he really struggles in run D and physicality.

Owamagbe Odighizuwa is supposedly returning to school. Which is good, he has a shot to be a top 10 next year.

Nate Orchard is my regular fav for our 1st rounder. Best value rusher available, good speed, good size, good strength. Steady Eddy.

LT Collins is flying up the chart, hes a mid 1st.

Either Tyrus Thompson or Daryl Williams, both OKlahoma T's are good 2nd-3rd round options if you want a mauling RT.

Fowler is a top 32 player, but not a top 10 player which means he should be involved in any mid to late round discussion. I get what you are saying, but he is not head and shoulders above the 11-32 ranked players.

Calhoun could be a fit because the Cardinals may like his natural rush ability, can feel they can develop the physical aspect of his game while they still have Matt Shaughnessy under contract. It is tough to tell right now where this tier of hybrid DE/OLB will fall right now though. Orchard is in the same boat.

I don't know about Collins flying up boards as draft boards aren't set yet by teams. I know there are varying opinions on Collins, and that some see him as a LT, some a RT, some a RT/OG, and some an OG only, How he is viewed and by what teams will determine where he falls in regards to draft position. I'm pretty confident that the majority of scouts view him as a RT/OG player which will land him in the top 45 somewhere. I don't know how anything more definitive can be said at this time.

Re: the Cardinals and need for a RT. I don't believe they are in the market for a RT as much as they are in the market for a versatile RG/RT player. Right now, I believe the Cardinals have both Larsen and Massie under contract for 2015, and they are probably looking for one player who can fill in at either spot if needed. The reason I mentioned Collins and Sambraillo is because I bleieve they both have the talent to beat out Larsen, and would give the Cardinals insurance if Massie left in FA in 2016.

What will be interesting is how many players the Cardinals lose to FA. This team seems to be very close knit so will some of the FAs on the team sign here for a little less because they like the atmosphere and the coaching staff?

In either case I can see more top tier FAs gravitating to AZ because of the coaching staff instead of using it as a bargaining chip to get a better deal elsewhere. I think those days are done. At least 2 positions will be better with FA signing which will alter the draft board for the Cardinals. Say the Cardinals sign a OG and an ILB, then does a OLB pass rusher move to the top of the list? What if they can't sign Fitz to a restructured contract? Does a WR move up the draft board? Floyd doesn't exactly instill confidence he can slide into the spot Fitz is in now. If they sign a pass rusher how does that affect the draft board? What becomes the #1 priority?

I think TE is very low on the needs list. I think they want to see a full year from Niklas and they are fine with Carlson.

When the season is over on Feb 1, 2015, an interesting off season will commence.

On bolded No. 1: No.
On bolded No. 2: They've benched Carlson for Darren Fells. Not sure how "fine" they are with that choice right now.

and not to be left out of any opportunities for mock drafts...This based on how I think we handle free agency and our cap.

1-Shilique Calhoun - OLB/DE - Michigan St.
*Natural edge rusher who may fall due to deep draft class. Needs to be better in physical part of the game. With Shaughnessy on the roster the Cards can use him as a sub package player right away and allow him to develop in a pro weight room.

2-Ty Montgomery - WR/KR - Stanford
*Vertical wide receiver who brings return ability. Not as quick out of breaks, and is a top end #2 WR. Similar player to Michael Floyd, and would provide roster depth if the Cards need to move on from Fitzgerald or Floyd. Essentially is the player they wanted when they signed Tedd Ginn at a much lower cost.

3-Steven Nelson - CB - Oregon St.
*Physical, press-man corner. Not great size or speed, but has experience playing on an island vs good passing attacks in the Pac 12.

4-David Cobb - RB - Minnesota
*Physical RB who can provide more of a power rushing element than Taylor looks to be able to. Limited experience in the passing game, but should be able to develop. Deep RB class and a devalued position pushes him down a bit.

5-Taijan Jones - ILB - Michigan St.
*Physical ILB who has a history of making plays and blitzing. Nice size in the middle to complement our WILB and has enough athelticism to potentially stay on the field in passing downs. can play special teams.

6-Shaquille Riddick - OLB - West Virginia
*More of an athlete than a positional player, similar to Aaron Lynch drafted by the 49ers last year. Didn't make much of an impact in college other than this year, but is a player who can be developed. Good size/speed and could be a special teams player at worst.

7-Nick Boyle - TE - Delaware
*Physically imposing TE whi brings a little to the passing game. Not from a large school so the adjustment to the professional game may be tough. Hard to project 7th round guys, but he would fit a need with a bit of upside.

.

Im not saying Fowler is a top 10, but hes easy teens, kind of like Shazier. Should also point out several guys we expect to be in the 1st (and thus push talent further down the board) have not declared for the draft yet. It happens every year, a couple 1st rounders stay in school and it makes the draft a smidge thinner.

Collins is most definitely 100% flying up draft boards. This im positive of. Im a draft hound so I read all the different sites to get different angles, and Collins is #2 (behind Shane Ray) on the buzz-o-meter. Scouts love him for the most part. A lot of the ‘top Ts’ are slipping a little. Some feel Andrus Peat is soft. Cedric Ogbuehi’s technique is lacking. Brandon Scherff (who I love. Absolutle MONSTA) would be a all-pro guard (not T). And so that leaves solid talents like Collins , Stanley, this Flowers kid I need to read more about and Sambrailo. Of all of them Collins and Stanley are my 2 favs and Id take either in the 1st in a heart beat. Either can be great T’s, or pro bowl Guards.

In either case I can see more top tier FAs gravitating to AZ because of the coaching staff instead of using it as a bargaining chip to get a better deal elsewhere. I think those days are done. .

Pass rusher is already at the top of the list. G and ILB are secondary needs, IMO, by far. And lets not forget Dwashs fate is still unknown. He comes back, and all of a sudden we are solid at ILB. So you never know.

As for TE, we had a deep stable of Tes this year, and we didn’t use any of them. No point in burning picks or FA money on them.

There will be normal turnover as weve seen the last 2 years with the Keim regime. Guy has no mercy. Lots of cuts. Lots of signings. I expect a “Cardinal decision” to come down on DD’s head, unfortunately.

We wont be big players in FA. Last year we spent on Veldheer because he was a dire need. This year, pass rusher and QB are our only BIG needs. And there are no FA pass rushers besides Houston, who should get tagged.

Ill take him, but I just do not think Calhoun can possibly be the BPA when we choose. Say he or Erik Kendricks was sitting there. Id most certainly take kendricks. And moreover, Id expect Orchard to also be there, because I value him much higher than most. Call it a reach, but I really, really like Nate Orchard.Hes worth our 1st in order to get him, IMO. A lot of people had Bucannon as a high 2nd, but we would’ve never got him had we passed, which is why we reached a little in the 1st, and hes turned into a great pick.

That’s funny, I also had Cobb in my mock prior to changing it. Good choice, big bruiser. An electric RB I like is Tevin Coleman, not that we'll take him.

I agree we need a WR since Fitz days are numbered, but given the talent in this draft, Id prefer to take a bigger ‘need-BPA’ shot with our 2nd rounder. Specifically T, pass rusher, QB, CB or G.

Also, a mid round WR I like is Austin Hill. Guy was a game wrecker prior to his injury, and by the time we get him, he will be 2 years removed and back to form. Hes comparable size, speed and physicality to Montgomery.

I need to research Nelson, youre getting obscure with personal favs that not everyone recognizes. For example, I like Clemsons ILB Stephone Anthony, and I realize Im probably the only one.
However, another CB I do REALLY like…Richard Sherman Jr, IMO…Alex Carter. Stanford man and everything. Best technician in the country which makes up for his sup par speed. Although my absolute fav is Senquez Golson. Only 5’8 but hes lockdown.

You took no Oline. FEED THE LINE! I don’t care if its 6th-7th rounders. Always feed the line.

A player like Abe would work but I agree they aren't easy to find.

This would work as well and with CC and DD and DWashout and whoever else we add could absolutely work.

I think we can all agree that Veldheer is outstanding, Massie & Sendlein solidish, Cooper should be fine long term which leaves RG as the most upgradeable spot on the Oline. As long as they add another top notch player to the Oline we should be good.

ILB is a huge need, but I believe we may grab a guy in FA. There are a couple buy low options which I feel may be available that the Cardinals will probably be in on.

Agreed a FA ILBer is need but I still want another one drafted.

The offense appears to be set for the most part on paper but I agree the production isn't satisfactory at this point. If Fitz isn't on the team then WR becomes a big need. Floyd and Brown are good players but neither are close to what Fitz brings to the table at this point.

One would hope and I believe I would make that kind of choice but I can't think off any examples where this actually happened on any team in the NFL. Were the los (last year) and Cro signings examples, I don't think so although in the same ball park.

In either case I can see more top tier FAs gravitating to AZ because of the coaching staff instead of using it as a bargaining chip to get a better deal elsewhere. I think those days are done.

I agree for the most part but bottom line is still money talks so we won't be getting anyone on a discount but to your main point at least we won't be used like in the past.

I think TE is very low on the needs list. I think they want to see a full year from Niklas and they are fine with Carlson.

K9 points out that Fells has taken Carlson's job (don't know this to be a fact because Chopper has gotten lazy and stopped his snap count threads  ) so I'm not sure Carlson is still held in high regard. It could also be that Fells is the best blocker and with our QB woes and the focus on the run game Fells is a better option on earlier downs.

I'm fairly confident that Housler will not be back so another TE will need to be added.

When the season is over on Feb 1, 2015, an interesting off season will commence.

SK certainly has made our off seasons very interesting and enjoyable. The upcoming one will be tough because of the Fitz and DD contract issues that have to be addressed.

Bodha, I truly enjoy this thread and all the information you are providing, Great Stuff!!!

I think ILBer is a huge need at this point because Minter isn't impressing, Foote is OLD and DWashout can't be counted on to not screw up. I'm 99.9% positive that SK isn't going to count on DWeed for anything and will simply take him as a bonus if he does get to play next year.

As for TE, we had a deep stable of Tes this year, and we didn’t use any of them. No point in burning picks or FA money on them.

A deep stable but not sure if it has any top notch talent. To your point BA doesn't appear to have a lot of plays to utilize the TE in the pass game. He views them as blockers who can surprise the D by making a catch now and again. I do wonder if he had Graham or Gronk would he utilize that kind of talent to it's fullest?

There will be normal turnover as weve seen the last 2 years with the Keim regime. Guy has no mercy. Lots of cuts. Lots of signings. I expect a “Cardinal decision” to come down on DD’s head, unfortunately.

I do love how Keim is all about results and doesn't have mercy. DD's future will be interesting. Frosty and Kelly have filled in so well that I think DD is one of the least missed injured players. His leadership is a huge factor but he is providing that this year even though he is out. Does DD decide to stay by taking a pay cut and restructuring?

We wont be big players in FA. Last year we spent on Veldheer because he was a dire need. This year, pass rusher and QB are our only BIG needs. And there are no FA pass rushers besides Houston, who should get tagged.

I agree plus I can't see where we will find CAP room to make a splash.

I agree that SK must continue to "FEED THE LINE".

I haven't looked too much into the players at this point, but I still like dreaming up overall schemes we make out on. Obviously kind of stupid, but I enjoy it.
This is mine so far this year:
1) OLB - not an elite speed guy(probably not available and not sure about fit) but a larger, get-to-the-QB hustler type. More rush ability then we currently have, but has to be able to set the edge. I think our true speed guys are our ILB.

2) OG - could be a converted OT. My hope is we'd find a day-one starter at this point.

3) RB - with the way RB's get picked so low these days, i think we can get a semi-elite back at the end of the 3rd. Not sure if i'd prefer thunder to match ellingtons lightening or another ellington type (so we can have two quick weapons out of the backfield, to cover for injury and keep fresh). In the second scenario, seems like we could get a short yardage/thunder who can block well as a FA, and hopefully Taylor continues to develop.

4)TE - give another shot at finding our blocking/catching TE. Not looking for the stellar athletic mismatch types that are so popular these days. Hopefully that means we can find a good option for our style this late.

5/6/7) Wherever our braintrust finds value, even if it's doubling up on already drafted positions or adding players to positions we already feel are strengths. I'd love to find an ILB in this draft but I think that's a spot to invest a high pick/great athlete in, so maybe a high pick in 2016. Adding more CB's is always a good idea too.

Again, if team's draft boards haven't even been discussed yet, how can a player (Collins) fly up boards that haven't been created? I will say that there are mixed opinions on what Collins future in the NFL is, but which teams view him as a LT or RT or OG has yet to be determined. Do I believe he is viewed as the best OT in this class? No. Do I believe that he is viewed as one of the best 32 players? Probably. Do I believe he is viewed as one of the top 45 players? Absolutely.

re: ILB. Foote is a FA. Minter is not good. Washington is facing another possible suspension. It is a primary need, but one that might be filled in FA vs the top of the draft. That being said, LBs make up a large portion of special teams, and as rosters become deeper, you tend to target guys who cna contribute on special teams to make sure they can stick on the roster.

re: TEs. Housler is a FA. Carlson may be a cap cut as the team is using Fells more and more. Niklas is coming back. Keim kept 4 TEs on the roster last year, and with two potential openings , I expect the Cards to use a pick on one to avoid two vet min salaries.

re: Offensive line. If I am drafting one, he is going to have to beat out Watford or Sowell, and that isn't happening with a 5th round guy. Remember, we will probably roster 8 linemen at most, so if you get a guy, he is going to have to beat someone out.

I agree that SK must continue to "FEED THE LINE".

1-Veldheer
2-Cooper
3-Sendlein
4-Larsen
5-Massie
6-Sowell - FA (I didn't know he is a free agent)
7-Watford
8-Fanaika - FA

So, we might draft an offensive lineman. We will need a veteran OT, and then possibly a developmental player. It's tough because roster spots are so valuable, but we might look at getting a OG/OT guy late who can step in if injuries wreck the line.

I discredited using a late round pick in my previous post, but with Sowell being a free agent, the team might sign a vet and draft one as well if they want to carry 8 lineman.

I know ILB is a big need, I was just saying that in the hierarchy of needs, OLB/pass rusher is #1, by far.

After that, we can look at ILBs, QBs, CBs, and Oline.

And there are some great ILBs in this draft. And I should point out that because this draft is so pass rusher heavy, and everyone needs pass rushers, there will probably be a feeding frenzy at the top of the draft. Which will push other positions further down the board, but with a higher value than their actual draft slot. So we could be drafting mid 20s and get the #1 ILB, or #2 T, or #2 CB. Etc.

For ILB, my fav is Erik Kendricks. Ultra versatile DWash mold. Very worthy of a 1st round pick. Denzel Perryman and Benadrick Mckinney are great ILBs also.

1) OLB - not an elite speed guy(probably not available and not sure about fit) but a larger, get-to-the-QB hustler type. More rush ability then we currently have, but has to be able to set the edge. I think our true speed guys are our ILB.

The cream of the crop are speedxpower guys. Shane Ray and Randy Gregory, which is why they go top 10. The further back in the draft, the more moles guys have.

Theres plenty of Speeeed rushers. Eric Striker and Dadi Nicolas are extremely fast, but both are also the same size as a big safety. Neither is especially good at run D due to their smaller frames.

Lots of power guys. But how I feel about power rushers, they are just run stoppers. Matt S and Acho are ‘Power Rushers’, how many sacks do they get? Not many. You want sacks, you need speed, or extremely good technique.

Nate Orchard (I feel like im becoming this guys campaign manager or something), has the best combination of speed, power and technique of anyone available in the 20s. Would I like Randy Gregory? Yeah, but you work with what you got. Orchard is a helluva good pick and a major pass rush upgrade.

You cant use that “Teams haven’t created their draft boards yet” logic because that would imply we have no idea where anybody might go. All we can go by right now is our own 2 eyes and the reports of draft guys whome we trust. If I say Leonard Williams is going top 5, youre not gonna say “That’s impossible to say because teams haven’t started..” because we both know it’s a virtual fact. Same with Collins. No, official draft boards aren’t up yet, but theres enough smoke to say this guy is highly regarded among scouts. Most feel he can be a good T, but if not, hes a near lock to be a pro bowl guard. 2 years ago, 2 guards went top 10, so don’t undervalue the value of guy teams view as an all pro potential (at any position). Its of my opinion, Collins is a top 3 T prospect, which easily makes him top 32. There are few QBs and CBs worthwhile in this draft, so other positions come at a premium. This is a good pass rush/O line draft.
IDK why you think a 5th round guy cant beat out Sowell or Watford. Sowell already got beaten out by a mid 4th rounder (Massie), and a guy they pulled off the couch (Max Starks). Id rather take a shot on an unknown talent, than stick with a known terrible talent. And I don’t know if theres any love lost with Watford. I think theyd be comfortable cutting him in a heartbeat at this point. Hes blown it 2 years running. Good Guards, especially, can be found in the mid rounds.

Leonard Williams is a top 5 talent but because need will dictate where he goes, he is a top 10 guy. Regardless of draft boards, we know that DEs/DTs are high priority positions, Williams is easily the best DT/DE, and he is able to disrupt the passing game so he is a top 10 guy. Top 5 just depends on who needs what and where. Randy Gregory is a top 10 guy. Amari Cooper. Shane Ray is a top 20 guy who might go in the top 10. Both QBs are top 10 guys due to positional need. Collins isn't the best offensive tackle, it isn't poor draft class for early talent, and so his place of draft boards is going to vary more than higher ranked guys.

If you want to say that you feel Collins is the 1st or 2nd best OT in the draft, that is one thing. Share why you think he is because I don't see it. But to say he is rising up boards is just silly at this point in time. There aren't boards to rise. He is for sure a top 45 guy who maybe goes between 15-25 if a team has a need for a tackle in that range and they feel he is a NFL level OT.

Regarding late round offensive linemen, it is all about mix. Coaches like backups they can count on, especially when they are counted on to keep a QB upright. Cooper was benched for Fanaika and Larsen because he was not fundamentally sound which was an area of concern. Do you really believ the Cardinals will draft a 5th round OT and use him as the primary backup behind Veldheer and FA to be Massie? I would be shocked to see the Cardinals go into the 2015 season with a late round rookie as their backup OT. That being said, I didn't see that Sowell and Fanaika were BOTH free agents, so it is possible they sign a vet OT in FA, and then draft a developmental guy if they want to enter the season with 8 lineman.

This entire rising up draft boards debate is like picking fly poop outa pepper. How about if Bodha says said player looks to be improving their draft status and is moving up draft guru boards?

This isnt like a pass rusher where we can assess speed, bend, arsenal of pass rush moves, play recognition, etc.
Guys a T. The only thing I can judge is does he get beat by speed rushers, bull rushes, and can he move guys run blocking?

In which case:

- Collins in the 2nd best pass blocker, IMO, behind stanley. Very reliable.
- 2nd best run blocker, behind Scherff. Def can move bodies.
- Handles bull rushes with general ease
- Is pretty good with speed rushers. Stanley is #1 here, but Collins is pretty good for a bigger guy

My assessment of the guy is that he is a 2 year proven T, who looks, to me, like a winner. And being one of the top 3 Ts available, IMO, that makes him a premier position prospect (being a T) and therefore easily 1st round material.

It may not be so much that you dont think highly of the guy, as it is you cant name a bunch of T prospects who are better. Hes one of the best just by default by that reasoning
